Could Aaron Poreda be our next Andrew Miller?
The padres DFA'd Aaron Poreda today and i just looked over his career stats and they reminded me of Millers.
Both were first round picks.
Both are power lefties.
Both had ok command (not great).
Both were traded in blockbuster trades (Miguel Cabrera/Jake Peavy).
Both lost their command after the trade.
Poreda is just 24 years old, 2 years younger than Miller. I imagine that the Red Sox will be all over him given these similarities. And then there is the Red Sox-Padres connection named Jed Hoyer. What are your thoughts? Poreda in Pawtucket at the end of the month? He's another low(no)-risk-high-upside candidate and Theo is known to take some flyers. I sure would like to see that =)

Possibly.
I guess its worth a shot, but I doubt that he is given much of a chance. I think Miller and Doubront are ahead of him by default.
Theo-trade John Lackey for a used condom and a punch in the nose. Remember, it's all about value.
Still, it couldn't hurt
Release Oki to make room for him on the Pawtucket staff.

Mike Minor?
He is a lefty starter/reliever for the Braves. Former top prospect but hasn’t had success in the majors, we could trade for him and David Ross from the Braves. http://conor-soxrox.blogspot.com/
I'm thinking the Braves might want to keep him around longer.

This is correct.
The Braves have excellent pitching depth, and I don’t think they’re in a hurry to part with any of it, unless it’s for someone who is really a potential starter in the OF for them.
In addition, I don’t think he has a NTC, but David Ross seems very happy with his situation in Atlanta, and having one of, if not the best backup catcher in the game being happy with where he is and what he’s doing is another luxury the Braves probably aren’t apt to part with.

True
But they’ve had several injuries to their outfield, we could trade them Darnell McDonald
I don't think Darnell McDonald is really a valuable commodity
he had some nice moments and is a serviceable 5th outfielder, but he’s basically a replacement level player.
Exactly
That’s why we need to get rid of him, we could also trade Nava. We don’t really have a need for him with Kalish and probably Reddick moving to the majors next year.
but the problem there
is these are players that don’t have any real value to speak of, so we’re not going to get anything of value for them in a trade. If you think Darnell McDonald or Daniel Nava is going to get us Mike Minor, you’re mistaken.
We could wait a little while
And if he doesn’t have success in the major leagues, then we could pull an Andrew Miller/Anthony Renaudo and nab him when his stock has fallen. That’s what I’m trying to say, not now, not this year, but maybe in 2012 or 2013 if he has not succeeded.
Both had ok command (not great).
Miller does not have OK command. He has terrible command.

He's been really good for his last few starts, maybe 30 innings.
That isn’t enough of a sample size for us to overlook the many more innings he’s had walking a ton of batters. I think they’re moving him to the rotation more or less because if they don’t he can leave if he wants to. It’s either let him go and miss out on the investment, or give him a shot.

well I mean they made the investment
because they think he has/had a chance. No sense in letting the investment getting too far away. If he is just hot, might as well call him up when he’s hot. The fact is, in two months, we’re still going to have years of information saying he’s wild. Either he’s fixed or he isn’t. There isn’t that much gained by letting him just sit in Pawtucket anyways if they don’t trust the results he’s getting.

Heh. This made me laugh.
Over the past three seasons with the Padres Aaron Poreda has logged 88.2 IP with a 10.92 BB/9.
10.92 BB/9
thats why i said he HAD ok command
look up his bb/9 prior to the peavy deal
I'll take Poreda
As a depth option, but I don’t think he’d ever contribute to the Major League Club.
The Red Sox suck, and I am the dirt that was sucked in, I am a dirty.
