Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Game 20, Overflow Thread: All's Well In LA

Through six, and things are going swimmingly for Boston. Youkilis has a homer, Carl Crawford has a pair of hits, Gonzo has driven on in, and even Tek has a big RBI double. Jed Lowrie has a hit too, but of course, we already knew that before the game even started.

And then there's Dice-K. Or DIce-KKKKKKK as you could call him now. Lot of fly balls, a few walks, but also six scoreless innings.

It's 5-0 Sox. Let's hope it stays that way. Or that the lead gets bigger. I'd always be OK with that--especially given the sorry state of the bullpen with Jenks and Papelbon on -3 days of rest.

I posited scenarios for tonight, and actually considered a Dice K meltdown might be good for the team (letting Wake and Oki mop up, and conceding the game).

My other proposal was a ridiculous 8 by Dice K, followed by Bard for the save. With 5 runs on the board, we can use Wheeler/Albers in the 9th and go to Bard only if it becomes a save situation.

Dice did a fantastic job for us tonight.

so far, this looks like

Ellsbury in CF or Dice K on the mound?

Which is more frustrating? Both have the tools to be superior players, neither seems to deliver it consistently.

so would you have him unavailable tonight and tomorrow?

so he has 4 days off in a row? That’s probably too much. Better to let him work tonight and make sure he has consecutive days off after.

by wolf9309 on Apr 23, 2011 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think we needed him tonight.

5-0.

Give him tonight off, and have him available for two innings tomorrow. Then, you only need Jenks/Paps if necessary.

by AlohaSox on Apr 23, 2011 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I think if he's pitching a lot

consecutive days off is very important. Since tomorrow’s a day game, this maximizes the muscle recovery time, he’d have a lot less if he pitched tomorrow.

by wolf9309 on Apr 23, 2011 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

But he had yesterday off.

So the question is consecutive Friday – Saturday or consecutive Sunday – Monday.

Plus you get the added chance of a really long rest, which I do want more of for him if only to bring the total count down.

but tomorrow you can say at the beginning of the day

that he’s off-limits- I’m sure they’re doing prep stretching/warming up before the game that he can get a full rest from. Consecutive rest of sunday-monday is longer because sunday is a day game and tuesday isn’t

by wolf9309 on Apr 23, 2011 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I see your logic, I do.

However, I think he wasn’t necessary tonight, and I won’t be even slightly surprised if Tito calls on him again tomorrow.

At the end of the day, it worked. We got a win. It was a pretty dominant one.

And… one more time… Dice K. Wow!

by AlohaSox on Apr 23, 2011 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

This is my thought too.

However, with Pedey getting us out of this on that play, not too much damage I suppose.

No Bard tomorrow, even if we can sweep.

Yeah, right call to pull Dice K there...

Much like it was a good call to pull him in the 7th, on a high, last start.

Bard worked out just fine (13 pitches?) but I would have rather allowed someone else to finish the game, and give Bard another day off.

Last question, Wolf… when Bard gets called out to the mound tomorrow night, will you come around to Ben and I saying they should have let him have tonight off?

This.

Yeah, if he doesn’t make that play, a run scores and there are still two outs. But more pitches for Bard isn’t a good thing, and if they score again… where do you go from there?

Another reason I think we should have started with Wheeler… then you have Bard to bring in if it goes haywire. If Bard pitched like the first game, what are you going to do to stop the bleeding? Bring in Oki?
