Pitching coach
It's been a while since I visited the site so forgive me if this is redundant. When is it time to wonder about Curt Young's abilities to manage the pitching? A team 4.99 ERA is tough to swallow. I know that Beckett seems to be recharged, Paps seems to have forgotten last year so far, and Lester is who he is regardless off who coaches him, but the rest of the staff seems to be heading south, in particular Bard.

first of all bard has been fine minus
game 1 implosion has given up 1 in 9 innings since. curt young is fine.
Since the 2-10 start the pitching has been pretty darn good
Hard to see how Young fits into a slow start. Seeing as the offense was sputtering as well. Is Magadan to blame for that?
Exactly
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

What's the starters' combined ERA over the last 7-8 games?
It has to be well under 2.00. Better fire the pitching coach — anything higher than negative 3.00 is unacceptable.
Definitely under 2.00 for the last 7.
I think it’s actually been good a bit longer than that.
This argument had more weight when we were 2-10, but our starters have been solid the last two turns through the rotation, so no worries about Young.
If Dice-K/bullpen don't blow it now, it'll 11 games out of 12 giving up no more than 3 runs
So it’s not even limited to the starters — the pen is occasionally a little shaky (with an unwelcome assist from Salty), but they’ve been pretty good too.
Yeah, didn't mean that the bullpen wasn't pulling their weight.
Just think our starting rotation has been filthy lately.
And then Paps closing has been lights out, even in the third consecutive game too.
According to Allan from Joy of Sox:
Boston is 7-1 over the last eight games, and the starting pitchers have a 1.01 ERA.
I think I’m okay with how Mr. Young is doing so far…
Galactus does as he pleases. Because Galactus is drunk.

Pitching coaches only matter when the team is doing poorly

I would say RELAX
Curt Young is here because he has a looong track record. This staff will be fine.

When you use a team ERA, you include relievers,
which are always tough to predict and can be great or terrible in SSS. I don’t know how much or if Curt Young even works with relievers. I think some teams even have a bullpen coach.
Man this team...they suck bad.

i am a jays fan and we have your old pitching coach,
i know you guys arent happy with your knew guy but he is good. All i know is the guy you lost in Farell is a great manger and really knows how to work with pitchers its awsome for our young staff, i dont think its that you guys dont have a good one i just think you guys lost the best. And theres only down hill from the best.
Who isn't happy with young?
aside from the new kid who misread his stats. I would have preferred Don Cooper, but I’m more than happy with Young.

I'm happy with Young
I’m happy with what he’s been able to come in and do. Someone said it on the radio or tv that I saw how hard it is to quantify what a pitching coach provides to the team. OC or DC in football is a little easier to judge when there are more schemes and plays that a fan can recognize, but a pitching coach can be hard to judge purely from a fans perspective.
I see alot of this…Pitching is bad so it must be the pitching coach. Hitting is good, gotta be the hitting coach. With the exception of a full blow-ups our pitching has been pretty decent, and the starters have been outstanding the last 8 or 9 games. Lackey, Dice-K, and even Jenks are veteran guys. When they struggle, there is only so much a pitching coach can do. They are starting to turn it around, even though Jenks can be scary to watch and when they turn it on you will see stretches like we are in now.
Part of that is Curt Young, and part of it is just those guys working through their mechanical and mental issues.
