OTM Fantasy Baseball Redux

Okay, so I haven't read the 336 comments on Sandy's thread, so I apologize if I've missed this somewhere along the way. However, the question I did see was when we could set it up, and the answer was early February on Yahoo!

So... since the last comment over there was 12 days ago (and that's still in January), I'm guessing it hasn't been set up yet, and I wanted to kick off further discussion to see if we could figure out how many leagues need to be set up to accommodate all the interest, how many players are interested in competing in a Red Sox fan league (which means Sox players are going to get drafted off the board at a premium rate) and where we go from here.

I've run a Yahoo! league for a decade or so, and generally run on these categories, with head-to-head play:

Batters: R, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, Avg
Pitchers: W, Sv, K, ERA, WHIP

A little unorthodox, but I think they give you a number of categories to choose from. I wonder whether we could set up a league for the Sabermetric guys (just not sure if Yahoo! has wOBA or xFIP as choices). I'm perfectly willing to do a 5x5 set up for OTM, if that's what folks want to go with. Doesn't look like Yahoo! has opened it up yet, so I cannot see what the choices would be.

Rather than start one and invite everyone in on a first come, first serve kind of set up... I wanted to post it up again and see whether we could determine an appropriate set of categories to group those interested.

So... how many folks want to play, and what are the categories we should divide ourselves up into? (For starters, I think "experienced" and "newbies" might allow those that haven't played before to have a little more fun with their first experience, but then again... it's not incredibly complex, so perhaps that isn't necessary.)

Definitely looking to expand my Fantasy community to include OTM in 2011. So... what's next?

Yep I've got the list of 24

well actually 22 – missing fnwaypark and Slap Baseball

I’ll send an email out as soon as the leagues are initially setup

If fnwaypark and Slap Baseball don’t get back to me I’ll go to the wait list (I think 18-1 ans wilsalex are next).

These will be head-to-heads

Aloha – there was talk of starting up a Roto style league as well – maybe you could front that

by BobZupcic on Feb 5, 2011 11:27 AM EST reply actions

Just to clarify...

… are you running a 24 team league? That counts everyone interested in playing?

I never popped in on the other thread, but would be interested if a spot opens up.

by AlohaSox on Feb 6, 2011 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

Nope

2 12-team leagues…..

by BobZupcic on Feb 6, 2011 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

Those leagues are full, assuming the two missing join in

However there was a lot of interest in doing a roto league, plenty of people expressed interest in doubling up and managing two teams in case there wasn’t enough.

Refresh my memory...

Roto is instead of head to head, you just compete by compiling stats all season long?

I used to play that way, but it has been a long time. I’d be happy to set it up if we thought we could get 12 managers together.

by AlohaSox on Feb 7, 2011 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

I believe that is the way it works, but it's been a while for me too

You can count me in.

If there is a roto league, please count me in. I'm interested.

I'm just trying to make sure I understand the scoring system listed above.

Is the head to head weekly like the cbs one in this link, except just without a few odd categories? http://baseball.cbssports.com/splash/baseball/spln/single/rules#rules_single_scoring

If this isn’t what you’re talking about, then let me suggest it as a potential format. Also, if there is a roto league, and you need spaces to fill, I’d be willing to give that a try. However, I would like to make sure everyone who wants to participate is in one league before I would double up.

Head to Head Points

and we will discuss what we want our point system to look like (although I’m betting it will be close to standard) and we will allow daily moves

by BobZupcic on Feb 5, 2011 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

I enjoy daily moves

As close to last year any minor tweaks deemed necessary works for me. I thought everything worked well last year.

I think we're filling up Bob's two leagues first...

There was a list of 24 players interested in two 12 teams leagues there.

However, once he’s filled those two, I’ll keep kicking this thread around to see whether there is interest in a third league, which I can set up, or whether to shift to a Roto style league where we borrow a few players from the other two leagues to reach 12 teams there.

by AlohaSox on Feb 8, 2011 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

Since I missed the cut over there...

… we will definitely be setting something else up, so I’ll keep you in mind.

by AlohaSox on Feb 8, 2011 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

I'm interested in a yahoo league definitely

So if there are any open spots after, i’ll be glad to fill in.

I just checked in too,

and I must say that the rosters rules are interesting. It lets you go in multiple directions to full spots like CI and MI. I’ve never played with that before, should be fun.

Last year

we had simply spare infielders and outfielders as opposed to corner and middle. Hopefully, we stay that way.

We can discuss this

I set it for a CI and MI mainly because its kinda standard

we do not have to be standard

by BobZupcic on Feb 9, 2011 10:01 AM EST up reply actions

Ha ha ha

I re-read my comment and hadn’t realized I had put “Hopefully, we stay that way.” How forceful of me.

I do like the idea of just an infielder and an outfielder better…but I’m certainly don’t feel strongly about it.

I rec'd this because we might need to discuss things.

Each yahoo league has a sorta crummy message board thing, so maybe this could be our message board. Plus, how many of you will check the league each day leading up to the start? If it’s really important, you can just email Bob to make sure he gets it. Otherwise, if you post it on here, all of us will probably see it.

That's fine

Hopefully Aloha or someone else will get the Roto league rolling as well – should be fun to follow

by BobZupcic on Feb 8, 2011 10:30 PM EST up reply actions

Let me know when both of your leagues are full.

Then I’ll kick around and see who we’ve got left. Looks like I wasn’t the only one that hadn’t jumped in on the other thread, so depending on how many folks we have left, I’ll set up a head to head or Roto league for the remainder.

by AlohaSox on Feb 9, 2011 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

There seems to be a lot of folks interested in another league

I think you should go ahead and set one up.

Setting it up today, and emailing the folks I have addresses for...

… however, where do I get the rest of the league? Who out there still wants to join a league, and should I just do one more new fanpost on this topic to capture them??

I already emailed, but I'll post here as well in response to Bob's discussion email.

1. I’m fine with the two divisions or just one big league.
2. I’m assuming that if we have 2 divisions, then the top 2 in each go to the playoffs. Or if we have the one big league, then the top 4 go. I don’t know how long the playoffs can be, but maybe we could have 6 teams make it ( 3 from each division or top 6). Any of these are fine for me.
3. I would rather not have the CF, RF, MI, or CI positions. I would prefer just IF or OF. In my perfect world, I would like to see something like: C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, OF, OF, OF,UTL, SP, SP, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, and about 5 or so bench spots with a DL spot.
4. I’m good with whatever point allocation you have now.
5. I’d prefer not to limit moves.
6. Right now, the draft time sounds good to me.

I would also be interested in joining in a league

Perhaps if AlohaSox sets up that roto league, I could join? I think that would be a great idea, plus I’m sure there are more besides myself who also want in.

OK for the OTM H-H Leagues

I’ve got 10 of my 12 in

Ben, how many do you have?

Check your emails if you were on the original list.

As I said before, I'll set up the third if we've got enough interested...

Are we all full in the two H-H leagues set up so far?

Sorry… been away from OTM for a few days, so a little delayed on my response. Will do my best to keep track of this… Bob, how did you collect all the email addresses?
