The possibility of acquiring Bengie Molina

Hey, this is my first fan post, and attempt to make sense to anyone, so please be honest, but slightly nicer than you would be =P

Star-divide

I still think that Bengie Molina is a free agent, is he not?

Here's my thing with Bengie, he has always been a solid baseball player, and a seemingly solid catcher (at the very least, better than Jason Varitek). So why not sign him up? Yes, we would have three catchers, but I think we really should give Salty a more bench oriented role until he proves he can contribute more, and I don't see Varitek as a starter (the main reason I am OK with Salty starting this year).

What do you think about the possibility of signing Bengie Molina, as a one year stop gap, so we have more time to develop our young catching talent?

Bengie Molina has been great

but at this point in his career, he’s a bit worse offensively than Salty has been in his disappointing major league time. He’s probably better defensively, but very poor offensively, and I’d rather give the young guy one more chance as a regular starter.

by wolf9309 on Feb 13, 2011 2:12 PM EST reply actions

You left out my choice.

Is a bad catcher but gives the Sox a better chance to win.

My apologies

In the future I will make this an option

Fear my wrath, my choice is not an option!

I can't really say he'd help us much more than any option we currently have.

He’s probably worse. We still have Wagner who could probably be better. Not really worth it.

I'll pass on bengie the blimp,

unless we need him for that eating contest tiebreaker.

I like the ambition...

… but no way we beat the Yankees in the eating contest. They’ve got that Colon-Sabathia-Chamberlain one-two-three punch, plus Hankenstein looks like he can put away some hoagies too.

I do not fear their one-two-three punch

You forget that we have David Ortiz, who I’m assuming can eat a rather large amount. If we really are struggling in HDE (Hot Dogs Eaten) we COULD trade for Pablo Sandoval as well. That would at least even the score.

I think you're underestimating the Giant Colon.

I hear he once ate the Angels’ traveling secretary for procuring only three truckloads of chocolate eclairs. But the really sick thing is, he then ate the entire guy’s family too…

Arrrrr. ’Tis no man, ’tis a remorseless eating machine!

He didn't do that much in Boston

Too much competition in the AL East, he will flounder in New York.

I bet Dice-K can eat a lot

The Japanese seem to have a way of eating a lot more than you’d expect, just look at Takeru Kobayashi.

by Maeamian on Feb 14, 2011 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

Good thing too

Or else Dice-K wouldn’t be worth his contract in any way. Although I’m assuming Takeru Kobayashi could pitch better… for less.

Yep

I’d rather see the Sox get Alfred Molina

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Feb 13, 2011 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

Ya I really dont see how Bengie is an upgrade

Give the Tek/Salty thing a chance and if there that bad trade for one at the deadline.

On the other hand

This is true

And if Bengie came to Boston, he’d get to see his brother Jose a lot more often =D

Not now

but if something happens early on to either Tek or Salty, I think he’d be a better pickup than relying on someone like Dusty Brown or Exposito

me 2

He’s a free agent next year and if the Cards sign Pujols, no raises for anyone else till 2021! I’d love to see the Sox sign him and solidify this key defensive position through 2016 or so. He hits adequately, if without much power; would take pressure off Exposito if he’s to develop into a starter; would give Lavarnway a chance to be Catcher #2 or #3 and mostly DH if his defense isn’t good enough for every-day; would give our rising group of young pitchers strong leadership; would be an awesome up-the-middle defense with Iglesias, Pedroia and Ellsbury/Che Hsuan-Lin; and by the time he hits his mid-thirties, maybe Ibarra or Butler is ready to step in while Molina shows them the ropes. It would also mean that your position players are pretty well locked in for 3-5 years or so unless you wanted to tinker with right or center field.

by Redsoxmike on Feb 13, 2011 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

Club option next year actually.

No way they’ll pass up on it.

blast

Then he’ll have to come as part of the package that brings him and Pujls to Boston for, hmmm, Salty and DiceK!’

by Redsoxmike on Feb 14, 2011 12:55 AM EST up reply actions

And while we're at it

We can ask for Pujols as well.

Can we somehow include Waiwright and Carpenter in the deal? I’m willing to jettison Mike Cameron and Lars Anderson.

Bengie is pretty old

The only way I see him getting on the team is if Tek has a season ending injury and Salty just flat out sucks and he is still available. Then I can see them signing him for a veteran prescence and bringing up one of the kids in the minors.

I think its obvious the Sox have every intention on going with Tek and Salty in a platoon role. Tek being the role model, captain, and veteran prescence. Salty being the young guy with a lot of potential and having the benefit of being in a low pressure situation.

by Jason A on Feb 14, 2011 10:38 AM EST reply actions

i was bummed in 2007 when Sox passed on signing

bengie for $1m (bennie & tek in 2007 – we would still have masterson and hoagland)

me thinks bengie is younger than tek

catching is our soft spot going into the spring. it would be nice if there is another option out there

I'd like to see him if...

Salty doesn’t play out well and Tek has another injury. Bengie would be much better than pulling up Dusty Brown

Wittkowski

by witt-k on Feb 16, 2011 8:31 PM EST reply actions

good news then!

Dusty Brown is no longer in the organization. Mark Wagner would be callup number one. For better or worse. Probably better, since he’s at least a pretty good catcher, regardless of hitting.

by wolf9309 on Feb 16, 2011 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

One question I pose...

Could anyone be worse than Kevin Cash, Dusty Brown, and Gustavo Molina?

by outofleftfield on Feb 16, 2011 11:51 PM EST up reply actions

I'm fairly convinced

that Gustavo Molina was just a random dude that Theo ran into one day and wanted to see if the name Molina just made him a good catcher.

by wolf9309 on Feb 17, 2011 12:44 AM EST up reply actions

So wait...

legally changing my last name to Molina will not make me instantly good at catching?

Sounds like something I took for my headaches last week.

Can we make "bromolcash" the official verb meaning "sucking at baseball"?

i.e. “Jeff Francoeur bromolcashed that at-bat, striking out on three straight swings-and-misses.”

by Tarrsk on Feb 17, 2011 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

He sounds dominican.

Or spanish. Maybe Puerto Rican.

We should sign him.I like his odd last name. And that first name is impressive too.

by outofleftfield on Feb 17, 2011 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

That seems like a pretty big risk

when only one third of his last name is Molina.

by Maeamian on Feb 20, 2011 1:20 AM EST up reply actions

I'd say a third of Molina

Is better than 3 Variteks. But that’s just my view.

Bromolcash could be a top 10 prospect!
