How about Andrew Bailey?

Andrew was an All-Star last year with the A's. His strikeout to walk ratio is great and all he needs is a better team. The A's are willing to trade him for some prospects and he could improve our relief team. He could be a set-up man for us. He could be a closer if Bard doesn't work out. With Papelbon gone, we need some other options and adding a few more relief pitchers would promote that. He makes sense to me and affordable....

Pretty sure the answer to this for the past month and a half has been "fuck no"

with a capital FUCK NO.

You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.

There's some helpful feedback, hey, biker?

Easy up there, boys.

He's a good reliever

he strikes out a good amount, doesn’t walk a ton. I have two real issues with him, which are that he gives up a lot of fly balls, which plays very well as a closer in the cavern called the Oakland Coliseum, but would mean a whole lot more doubles in Fenway; secondly, he’s definitely got some injury concerns.

So really, if he wasn’t too expensive, I’d be interested, but reportedly Beane is asking for a whole lot for him- and he’s just not a position that should be a priority for the Sox right now. In addition, he’s projected to make $3.5 million this year, which isn’t a ton, but is $3.5 million that should be going to starting pitching.

Beane is a freaking magician

Further evidenced by the Gio trade. Do not want to see Cherington get taken by him.

Agreed with the above comments. The Sox should not be trading prospects for BP pieces (the Melancon trade, imo, was forgivable for many reasons) when they can easily sign some guys or even wait for Madson’s market to shrink even further and sign him on the cheap. Ideally, that money should be going to starting pitching.

I think the Gio trade is more on the Nats than Beane

Beane a genius?

These prospects must be Babe Ruth, Lou Gerig, Ty Cobb and Pete Rose. How about developing a pitcher, and for once, not flipping him for prospects? Do you think the average A’s fan is all charged up about this? Probably not. They are probably cancelling their season tickets as we speak. If Beane was the genius he was portrayed as in Money Ball, the A’s would have two or three trophy’s by now. Oakland, while not the greatest idea baseball ever had,to place a baseball team, will support a winner. That means holding on to talented players, like Nick Swisher, speaking of Money Ball, and building around them. If an owner can’t,or won’t foot the bill to put a winning baseball team on the field, Baseball should make him walk the plank.

Oh. Em. Gee.

Oakland can’t pay him. Sure, they can take the arb hit, but they can’t “afford” him in a practical sense. They don’t want to pay big money with the stadium and city in limbo.

Gio’s walk rate is scary. Beane is selling high. What is wrong with that? They already traded Cahill (and got Jarrod Parker out of it…that is excellent), Anderson needs TJ, and the rest of their rotation is nothing special. Gio is not the difference between a winning season and a losing one for Oakland—they need to revamp their entire offense + pitching staff.

That was a great haul for a guy that’s probably a #3 outside of the Coliseum, with a walk rate that suggests some decline.

I don’t think people realize how good we have it as Sox fans. Beane is a genius with the payroll and resources that he has at hand. The performance of teams like Oakland or TB is cyclical…draft and develop, compete for a few years, then be forced into either a complete or partial rebuild when your young stars become expensive free agents-to-be.

BTW, most Oakland fans are pretty happy about this deal…can’t see any reason why they shouldn’t be.

What would you think about Grant Balfour instead of Bailey?

by Robert57 on Dec 23, 2011 9:44 PM EST reply actions

Andrew Bailey & Ryan Sweeney

Great trade….we need a CLOSER and Sweeney fills the gap in the OF….no money spent and the Sox are OK

Disappointed this year that the Sox couldn't finish, but I know they'll come back and I hate those Yankees....Go Bosox!

not quite

about $5 million spent on their salaries- and Sweeney certainly does not take the place of a starting right fielder

Well

There is actuially money spent and Sweeney just takes the place of the OF’er we had.
