I'm really beginning to think my Roy Oswalt prediction is looking good...
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.
Wait ’til next year!
I have a suspicion we go into the year with Bard and Aceves in the rotation.

I really don't think so.
Actually, the rumor of Aceves for closer is one I don’t mind, to be honest. I think he’s got the make up, the hard fastball, and the nasty attitude you want from a closer. I still think I’d rather have Bard, but either of them would probably be fine.
So… point of clarification. Is Cahill in Oakland, like it says up at the top of the page? Why do I feel like I saw a Cahill in Arizona’s rotation, and think there was a trade between those two teams? Or am I just breathing too much smoke off the hot stove?
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

He was traded from Oakland to Arizona
Probably just a typo.
Joe, the reason we shout "WE ARE" and the reason the answer will always be "PENN STATE"
Thanks... no knock on you there.
I was honestly confused. Started thinking there were two Cahills… the offseason is starting to blur as the months go on, and we still haven’t signed any starting pitching…
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Aubatron hits on Bailey.
Joe, the reason we shout "WE ARE" and the reason the answer will always be "PENN STATE"
Looks like I’m wrong on Madson. Bailey was sadly my next choice if I didn’t go with Madson.

"Every day is a great day for hockey."
I'm a little confused on this point.
Doesn’t aubatron have 2 correct, and Brandon C./Marisa have 2 correct? So it is now a three way tie, right?
Or did I miss the Roy Oswalt signing?

Ah! Now I see...
I did not remember that there was a tie breaker, let alone what it was… so what you’re saying is, when Roy Oswalt signs… damn, aubatron has him too… so I need an Oswalt and a Wheeler signing to win?
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

I wouldn't worry
Once Jon Garland and Ryan Ludwick sign for cheap $$ and Cherington employs a Jedi to trick Beane into believing McCarthy was part of the Bailey trade…I will have gotten 4 out of 5.
That will give us our two back of the rotation starters, a RH RF bat to platoon with Sweeney, Bard and Aceves return to the bullpen to make our bullpen incredible on paper, and we can all sit back and wait for Spring Training.
Plus, I win. So, really…It’s an ideal situation for everyone involved.

I don't know where else to put this,
but Heyman is reporting the Sox are not in on Jurrjens anymore, which should make people happy.
Not really
if acquiring a bullpen piece is preventing us from acquiring starters it should be making us more angry.

It's one starter they're out on.
Heyman’s also reporting they’re in on Kuroda, Oswalt, Jackson, Garza and probably others we don’t know about. He’s not saying they’re out on every starter, just because they picked up Bailey.

I doubt we have the pieces to get Garza anymore
not unless Theo wants to raid our lower minors.

Yeah I do too,
but that doesn’t mean they won’t get a SP. Heyman, Rosenthal, and Neyer have all said the Red Sox will get a SP, just don’t know who yet.
by aubatron2011 on Dec 29, 2011 12:33 PM EST up reply actions
I don't believe that any of the pieces we've traded away
would’ve been instrumental in a Garza trade. I don’t think Theo much cares for Reddick and Head and Alcantra weren’t exactly top value.
Who do the Cubs have at first base?
Couldn’t we package Youk to them? I mean, we know Theo loves him and probably knows as well as anyone else that moving Youk to first would be best for his career…
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Hey, I want us to sign Oswalt/Kuroda/Maholm or even Jackson...
… however, unless we add at least one and probably three SPs, I’m not convinced it matters whether we have Youk at 3B or go ahead and play Middlebrooks there.
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

If we did Youk for Garza
I’d shit myself in anger, glee, then anger again.

perhaps that WILL happen
and we will revolutionize the pitching role. We will have three starters that pitch about 3 innings each every three days and then have the bullpen handle the last 6 innings.
Ick.

Don't think it counts as a New Addition to the team
But Rich Hill is back on a minor-league deal.
by South Coast Ghost on Dec 30, 2011 3:16 PM EST reply actions
Well Ortiz, Wake and Tek are options
So I would count Hill there as well. Unless you mean because it is a minor league deal and not a major league one.
by The Name is Dalton on Dec 30, 2011 4:00 PM EST up reply actions
Actually I meant it was because I thought Hill was still on our 40-man roster when we started this.
Can’t remember if he was non-tendered before or after the “deadline”
by South Coast Ghost on Dec 30, 2011 5:35 PM EST up reply actions
I'm not sure
Was it that they had to be on the 40 or the active roster by opening day?
Joe, the reason we shout "WE ARE" and the reason the answer will always be "PENN STATE"
Pretty sure they have to make the 40 man, so this wouldn't count.
Nobody had him anyway, did they?

FA pitchers still available - I guess I would not complain for a 4 or 5 starter
Jackson, Harden, Peniero, Maholm, Vasquez, Oswalt, Kuroda, Madson, Iwakuma, Garland
I have to imagine the Sox will take a chance on 1 or 2 of those names – maybe the 1 year high risk high reward contracts coming off surgery?

If they absolutely must put Bard in the rotation
I would hope that they sign Sheets, Webb, and Duchscherer to minor league deals, so that when Bard fails and is put back in the rotation we get two or three good start out of each of them before we have to make Andrew Miller a starter.
