Red Sox Considered Making Adrian Beltre A Shortstop
But maybe not when you think they did. Bill James, while answering questions at his site, mentioned Boston thought about trading for Beltre and making him a shortstop during their World Series-winning 2004. It's Bill James, so it's worth a peek.

Let’s just be happy that didn’t happen.

At least this is a situation
Where they won anyway. So we don’t have to all go, “RABBLE RABBLE” after the fact, picturing this succeeding.

I'm trying to think timeline...
… this was when Beltre was still a pretty slender guy, and before he’d had that big season with the Dodgers, right?
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.
Wait ’til next year!
I think it would've been awesome.
But of course I’m fine with the fact it didn’t.
My computer is being dumb and not letting me reply to Aloha
But 2004 was Beltre’s big home run year.
You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.

So, we would have been trying to trade for him during his monster season?
Jesus… that might have better than Orlando Cabrera!

That's why, like Marc said,
it’s thank christ they won
