Bobby Parnell

In my opinion, the Red Sox should make Daniel Bard their closer in 2012. However, if they were to do that-- they would need somebody to replace Bard in the set-up role. I think the Red Sox could fulfill this need by looking over to New York (no, not the Yankees) and acquiring Bobby Parnell from the Mets. Parnell had a pretty good season in 2011 with the Mets, going 4-6 with a 3.64 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 59.1 innings primarily as their set-up man. He also pitched for a 3.21 FIP and a 3.46 xFIP, both very respectable stats. I think that Parnell would adequately replace Bard, who went 2-9 with a 3.33 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 73 innings as well as a 2.96 FIP and 3.05 xFIP. This would leave the Red Sox bullpen with Bard, Parnell, Albers, Morales, Jenks???, Aceves, and another acquisition. I think Parnell would replace Bard and provide a solution to a need for the Red Sox.

Throws hard

Dude averaged 97 mph on his fastball last season — put him back-to-back with Bard and you’ve got some flamethrowers.

What was the offseason that brought us Lackey?

Don't forget Cameron

It also brought us Scutaro though, who turned out well.

Put enough of those back to back

to put the Mackinac to shame.

You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way.

Iwas hoping for Broxton, Nathan, Capps,

And knew CJ and MB were impossible. And am very satisfied with Ben’s approach to date.

At this time last year, with CC, Gonzo, Jenks, Wheeler, the Sox had already won the WS. The only weaknesses mediots and bloggers feared were Ells, Salty/Tek, Scoot, and a farm system theoretically devoid of MLB-ready talent. So much for prescience.

When Ben says tweak this strong team he seems to mean it. Collaborating with a large team of scouts, sabrmetricians, coaches, and with Ben the ultimate scout/player development guru/metrician who plans to be there in October, these pros have not only crossed every “T” on every available FA and potential trade, they actually trust this team and (see internal options) actually trust the kids in the same way the Rays trust theirs, and with good reason.

Ben knows that addimg a stretched ojt Bard and well conditioned Doubront, for example, potentially creates the dominant Rotation in the ALE and beyond.

He knows that Bowden, Tazawa, Weiland and Wilson are ready to succeed in some capacity in MLB … and added to his current choices of
Acevas, Albers, Carlson, Duarte, (Jenks, Hill), Miller, Morales, Wake, Wheeler, the Pen is already formidable, moreso with tweaks.

None of us can doubt that Ben will add pitching via trade or FA between now and Feb. We will have some idea by midnight after non-
tenders are scooped up. Acevas, Albers and Hill were pleasant surprises last season despite early grousing by fans. We need to be as patient as Ben or go mad, because Ben is intent on building a winner for Fenway’s 100th and doesnt want to do it by outspending the MFY, no matter what Yenta Rosenthal recommends. I hope Ben trusts his gut, the numbers and the kids. There is every reason to do so.
