In my opinion, the Red Sox should make Daniel Bard their closer in 2012. However, if they were to do that-- they would need somebody to replace Bard in the set-up role. I think the Red Sox could fulfill this need by looking over to New York (no, not the Yankees) and acquiring Bobby Parnell from the Mets. Parnell had a pretty good season in 2011 with the Mets, going 4-6 with a 3.64 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 59.1 innings primarily as their set-up man. He also pitched for a 3.21 FIP and a 3.46 xFIP, both very respectable stats. I think that Parnell would adequately replace Bard, who went 2-9 with a 3.33 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 73 innings as well as a 2.96 FIP and 3.05 xFIP. This would leave the Red Sox bullpen with Bard, Parnell, Albers, Morales, Jenks???, Aceves, and another acquisition. I think Parnell would replace Bard and provide a solution to a need for the Red Sox.
