BZ's "Pick-5" 2012
That's right folks, last year's pick 5 is back! The idea is to pick 5 players that you think might or will be on the Red Sox 2012 roster that are not currently listed on the 40-man. Posting rules are below.
RULES:
1. Post your 5 picks in the subject and of course; feel free to elaborate on your picks in your post
2. Feel free to heckle or laud others picks but please make sure you do as a reply under their original post
3. Bets end on 11:59pm Friday, November 29th or when the first acquisition comes through.
4. You receive 1 pt per player that the Sox sign and that sticks with the team (makes opening day roster)
5, Tie-breaker will be done by cummulative 2012 salaries (winner = the higher cummulative salary)
Reigning Chumpion: Pl1166 who scored 2 pts last year correctly picking Gonzalez and Varitek

Another catcher?
I can’t see a world in which we bring 3 catchers along with us. We already have 3 on the 40 man. I think Salty and Lavarnway will both be fine and assuming that we can find something better than your #5 pick their defense won’t be tested nearly as much, seems to me both control the bases adequately enough.

Doesn't mean it's a bad idea. Adrian might have been on there for a few years now.
But only the people who guessed him last year would have gotten it right. Don’t know what point you’re trying to make here.

Until he gets traded somewhere
Or stops hitting like a boss on the road.
He’s 27, in his prime, hits well for the position, plays at a position we may need help at soon and is on a team that may be willing to make a deal.
I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be included, or singled out for that matter.

Agreed
I think we’d be better off signing a couple people like Kazmir instead, one of them would likely work out to better than a 5.00 ERA.

Trevor Cahill, Edwin Jackson, Heath Bell, Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Beltran
My rationale: The Red Sox need a proven closer and 2 starters plus a 3rd baseman & RF with pop.
In this scenario Ortiz is let go and Youk is the primary DH but can rotate with Ramirez and Gonzo in the field.
Also, Reddick and others (not sure who ) are traded to Oakland for Cahill so the As shed salary and pickup a cheap OF (they could be losing their entire OF so it might be win-win).
I think this makes sense since the Sox pick up 2 right handed bats and gain flexibility at DH. I am not crazy about Ramirez (defense, injury prone) but I think Youk, Ramierz, Beltran makes more sense than Big Papi and starting Youk at 3rd.
I do not like this as it t is potentially ugly since the Sox get older in a hurry with Ramirez and Beltran and could end up with two injured starters. What I like about it is Jackson, Cahill and Bell and the ridiculous power the lineup would have by adding Beltran and Ramirez….

Has to be better than the Crawford signing and would only be for three years
My thoughts were the overall offense and flexibility with Youk, Aramis and Beltran would be overall better than just keeping Papi and Youk and adding Beltran
"Man that ball got outta here in a hurry, you know anything that travels that far oughta have a damn stewardess on it, don't you think?" - Crash Davis
the Crawford signing is in literally no way relevant whatsoever
just because we made one shitty signing doesn’t mean that it justifies making more slightly-less-shitty signings
Cahill?
That would be awesome but Gonzalez is more realistic.

Whoa horsey
I don’t mind letting Iglesias go, but Boegarts should be held on to. From what I’ve been reading he might be a Top 20 prospect as near as next year
I know the braves are looking for outfield help and have a great abundance of young pitching. thought that would make us a good trade partner as we essentially have two of the same prospects for one spot in Reddick and Kalish. As for the rest of the trade, i don’t know what will get it done, thought one of our young shortstops would be a start. I defenitely believe will be trading for one starting pitcher. I don’t see them signing one of the big name free agents and you can’t rely on one of the second tier pitchers to fill two spots in the rotation.
Considering Bogaerts was only in A-ball
You could make the case that we should sell high—his buzz is off the charts right now. And considering his very raw approach, his performance could definitely drop off a cliff when he moves up.
Now, I drank the Bogaerts kool-aid months ago, so I’m not saying I personally want us to trade him, only that there’s an argument for it. But I definitely wouldn’t want to trade him for Jurrjens, who has like four hundred warning flags dangling from his jersey.
Reportedly without the attitude problems.
Joe, the reason we shout "WE ARE" and the reason the answer will always be "PENN STATE"
Let's call him 3.0, a little separation would be nice.

Just a feeling that we bring Ortiz back, along with Wheeler, and do what we can to sign Bedard. From there, I’d love to see us add Oswalt for SP depth, and we need to replace Paps (but I really, really don’t want us to sign Madson to that role).
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.
Wait ’til next year!

Happy Thanksgiving!
I did not pick Street from the Rockies – but I wonder about a trade there? There are so many interesting alternatives out there – I think last year I did not pick 1 correctly…can’t remember
"Man that ball got outta here in a hurry, you know anything that travels that far oughta have a damn stewardess on it, don't you think?" - Crash Davis
Jonathan Broxton, Francisco Rodriguez,
Mark Buehrle, Roy Oswalt, Josh Willingham. I think this would cost about 38 Million dollars next year, which is a lot. But I see these all as being short contracts, which lowers the risk a bunch. Buehrle getting 3 years would probably be the longest. It would be a bit of an investment, but all these guys are talented, and mostly healthy. These aren’t reclamation projects, but they’re still low risk. Sounds perfect to me :D
David Ortiz, Erik Bedard, Jason Varitek, George Sherrill, John Lannan
I think John Lannan would fit the Sox pretty well. He seems to be the odd man out of the rotation for Washington and I don’t think the Sox would have to give up too much for him. I believe Sherrill would be a good fit for a year or two since he’s a lefty and he’s better than most of the relievers on the market.
"Remember, it's not over until the fat lady drops one."
Broxton is out.
Signs with the Royals. Which is interesting, because now Soria maybe available.
I think he wants to close. Set up men aren't paid that much.
by aubatron2011 on Nov 29, 2011 12:21 PM EST up reply actions
wouldn't really make sense from the Royals perspective
they’re just getting to the point where they’re willing to deal prospects in order for major league talent, to be able to compete in 2013-2014. Soria is under control through 2014, and Broxton is just there one year. Would be very confusing if they traded him unless they got a boatload of major league ready talent.
I think probably Broxton just wants somewhere he can re-establish himself as a good pitcher- I think it’s pretty widely recognized that if he is healthy and pitching well, he can close- and probably if he does that, he gets traded mid-season (unless the Royals manage to compete this year, which I wouldn’t say seems likely except that they’re in the Central)
I agree with you
about all of this. I don’t think they will trade Soria, but anything’s possible. They could also see if Soria wants to start. I think this gives the Royals options was my main point.
