So Dale Sveum and who else?
Just for fun,
After hearing the tweet about Dale Sveum being a finalist in addition to one more candidate, who do you think/want to be the other candidate.
Personally- Pete Mackanin. Classy guy, clearly can handle the media which is big in Boston, some experience, and experience working under Charlie Manuel- a fabulous manager. Also, while I feel like he'll take input from the FO like they want him to, not to the extent that he's a puppet (which was the impression that I got of Tito- that he took input but didn't let Theo run the game).

when i said experience,
I meant manager experience.

Honestly, my bet is
that #2 is Lamont. The reason is because, going into the interview, I think it was pretty clear that Lamont was not really a legit candidate for manager, but Cherington just seemed completely surprised after the interview like “I sure like this guy a lot more than I expected.” I’d say I like what I’ve heard of Lovullo the best, but I’m pretty sure that Sveum is our next manager. In any case, I have little enough information that I can’t really make a great judgement.
I really hope it's not Sveum.

I really find the coverage of him interesting
for one thing, it seems like, for all he’s been hyped to be the leading candidate, I feel like the media has reported less about him than anyone else- and most of the coverage I could find about him after his interview seemed to be trying to convince the reader than he’d be a better manager than third base coach.
I don’t know, if they think he’s best, I’ll be curious to see what he can do but, after his tenure here as a coach he had better be one HELL of a manager.
Honestly, none of the final 5 are guys that I find terribly exciting.
I believe they will hire Sveum
or someone along those lines, a cheap guy. And if this team does not do well next season, as in win the world series; they are going to go hard after Maddon next season.
I think John Henry loves Maddon, and has mentioned his name often since Francona left, reminding us that he was the 2nd pick behind Tito a few years back.
I know Maddon says he won’t leave but I do believe thats ownership’s plan.
I like Maddon, but not sure if his approach will work with a veteran team.

I would not be the least bit surprised if that was true
also, is anyone else completely surprised that no one appears to have shown any interest in Dave Martinez as a manager?
Maybe teams have asked and the Rays have said no.
Maddon basically said that if they let Martinez go it would be like suicide for the Rays.

I know it's been specifically reported
that the Red Sox and Cubs at least both have not asked for permission to interview him.
I don’t think there is any team in baseball that would actually deny a bench coach permission to interview for a manager’s job. That team would have a tough time getting new coaches to work there.
The Sox may not have asked
because you really think that the Rays would allow him to leave for their competition, similar to what the Blue Jays did when Farrell was rumored to be a candidate with the Sox. They tightened up their rules so he couldn’t just leave. The Cubs, on the other hand are a more curious case for why they haven’t asked to talk to Martinez.

Farrell is different
that would be a lateral move. Makes sense that they would stop it if he wasn’t getting a promotion- but like the Red Sox let Farrell out of his contract to manage the Blue Jays, teams will pretty much not attempt to block an actual promotion that is offered to a coach.
Pretty much being the key words in you last sentence.

well when I say pretty much
I mean I’m quite sure there is no team out there that would block it. It’s entirely possible, but if the Sox or Cubs were interested, they certainly would’ve asked and the media would know- if for no other reason than that saying no would make the Rays look very unappealing to any other prospective coaches. So no, I don’t think pretty much were the key words. I’ve actually never, ever heard of anyone asking permission to interview a coach for a promotion and being denied.
The Cubs I agree that if they asked and the
Rays said no it would make the Rays look really bad to prospective coaches, but when the Rays and Red Sox are basically playing for a playoff spot in the division each year, if the Rays had said No to Martinez being interviewed by the Red Sox it wouldn’t make them look that bad. Larry Luchino, when asked about granted permission when it came to Theo to the Cubs, had said that there had been cases where the Sox had denied permission, even in terms where they it had not been a lateral move.

I dunno, nowhere that I've seen
and it would certainly counter what John Henry has said:
"There is a certain protocol in this game and it is if someone asks permission for a job that’s not lateral, you give them permission."
I like you think it's strange that The Sox didn't at least ask for permission
but there had to be a reason why they didn’t ask. Everybody says Martinezz will be a great manager, so why would the Sox not at least ask about him? There has to be something they know we don’t.

It probably wasn't for a high profile
position so the Media didn’t care. I think there’s only two teams the Red Sox would do somethinkg like that , and they are Yankees and Rays and the Yanks ad Rays would do similar thing to the Sox or the other (Yanks to Rays and vice versa).
