Four years for Papelbon?
When that fastball loses 2-3 MPH, Papelbon is in major trouble. This will be a terrible deal.

This could turn out to be one of the better non-moves in a couple of years. Thanks, hope for the best, but he’s just not worth the money.
The question is whether they believe Bard is capable or if they want to sign one of the myriad of FA closers to a more friendly deal.
I'd be thrilled with Madson, if they could get him for three years.
I wouldn’t ordinarily give three years to anyone, but realistically I think it’s necessary to sign Madson, and he has a decent chance of being ok the whole time. At least as good as any reliever.
