The Red Sox have had a lot of injuries to there pitching. Clay Bucholtz was injured most of the second half of the season. Dice-K has not been worth the money he was payed and John Lackey, has well lacked of great pitching. The Red Sox could possibly trade Lackey for A.J. Burnett, but I don’t know if the Yankees would do it. The Red Sox bullpen has also lacked. Alfredo Aceves has been Francona’s go to guy. But thats about it. Papelbon has been solid as expected. Daniel Bard had some problems late in the season. The rest of the bullpen was virtually Matt Albers. Those four guys carried the load for the Sox after the starters collapsed along with the rest of the team.
Adding a third pitcher. The Red Sox have two of the best pitchers in the MLB, Josh Beckett and Jon Lester. But besides those two it was Bucholtz (for the first half), Lackey and Wakefield. The Sox will get Bucholtz back for next season but will he be good? If the Red Sox perhaps traded Lackey for Burnett. Then they could trade Dice-K for another decent pitcher, perhaps Ivan Nova. I doubt the Yankees would trade Nova though. A more realistic trade is Dice-K for Derek Lowe or Hiroki Kuroda. The Red Sox could even sign a free agent pitcher. The best one see out there that is a possible free agent is Brandon Webb. The Sox could possibly sign him. But either way the Sox will need to get some pitching.
The Red Sox can not score. It’s as simple as that. The only way they score is home runs. The Red Sox bats are not even that bad. They have Jacoby Ellsbury who can do every thing. He really is a five-tool player. Dustin Pedroia is also very good at getting on base. David Ortiz can still hit the home run when needed. Gonzalez can hit a home run at any moment, but can also get on base. Youkilis is kinda like Ellisbury, he can hit the home run and get on base. The only reason Marco Scutaro is on the team is he is a great defensive short stop. But he can get hits. Jarrod Saltalamacchia is a decent fix at catcher and can hit decent, but sometimes chokes. J.D. Drew is also a decent right fielder but can not hit. Carl Crawford can hit, but had a rough year, it happens to everybody.
There is not a fix. Just play next year like they did the first half of this year. The Red Sox have a great batting team they just need to play like the old team, the team of July.
Well I really don’t think there is a problem here but I guess some people do. The Red Sox announced that they will release Terry Francona. The thing with Francona is that the worst the Red Sox have done under him is 86-77 in 2006. Most teams in the MLB would love to have that record. The Sox have already sent Theo Epstein to the Cubs.
The fix is simple, sign a good manager. Not that Francona was not a good manager but they are releasing him. The front runner for the position is rumored to be Bobby Valentine. I doubt he quits his job at ESPN and signs with Red Sox. Some other big names that have been mentioned as possibly replacing Francona are Tony La Russa and Joe Torre. The Red Sox have also announced that the new GM is Ben Cherington.
Terry “Tito” Francona, we will miss you.
Sincerely, Red Sox Fans.
