Cherington's post-press conference interview on WEEI
Underappreciated, I believe, in all today's digestion of yesterday's events are some statements new Red Sox GM Ben Cherington made on WEEI in a 19-minute interview given shortly after the more highly covered press conference. Here he spells out more plainly that big ticket items are not the solution to the pitching rotation, basically saying no to Wilson, Sabathia, Darvish, etc. Rather, Lester, Beckett, and Buchholz will be the core of the rotation, and cost-effective pitching depth will be the sought-for acquisitions. He cites the signing of Alfredo Aceves as an example, calling it last offseason's best acquisition in terms of bang for your buck.
