I TOLD YOU SO! Sorta.
So, I remember writing this and had to revisit after the last week of so of Red Sox related news: http://www.overthemonster.com/2010/9/15/1690025/a-bridge-over-dirty-water-part-1
Really should have finished Part 2 of that article in retrospect, especially after reading this http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/7092528/terry-francona-victim-latest-red-sox-smear-campaign
Whoops!!! I think that may prompt my return from retirement.
(still visit the site daily, keep up the good work everyone!)

Prescience?
I remember reading that and the comments. Interesting discussion about Tito, who will be missed and, hopefully, remember with fondness and gratitude. Amazing undervaluing Ells, and I’m beginning to understand a. Inherent problem with advanced metrics: they are simply less flexible than the players they so narrowly measure. Ironically, the sample that was used to demean and seriously damage Ells’ standing and value to the Sox was too small at the time to make such devastating claims. The #s themselves, even if the sample had been large enough to be accurate, have no way to interpret or allow for any kind of the growth (from emotional maturity to developing a more powerful body to a slightly altered swing to learning how to read CF.) that Ells showed in 2011. I’m not sure which was more hurtful and vindictive to him, judgemental and angry attacks by the media by new metrics fans sacrificing Ells to Reinforce their position as true arbiters of a person’s worth. IMO the media, some players, the medical staff, and his loudly vocal new metrics fanatics (as opposed to advocates).

owe him an apology.
There should be an “Or” between damaging media OR new metrics uber fans.

I haven't disliked his defense for a while just because of the metrics.
It’s mainly been watching him on the field. He’s too fast to have to dive so often, he misreads fairly frequently and his IQ out there isn’t particularly high, he too often is out of place on plays, not backing up plays he should be or not calling off people he should (Beltre’s knee an example of this).
He had a tremendous year for sure, but I think his actual defensive value is somewhere between his UZR from this year and the one from 09. This year in my eyes only vindicated him in that he’s not a below average fielder like some would say. I still think he’s right about at the average mark, instincts aren’t great.
