Compensation would not be major players and/or saddling the Cubs with a bad contract. A few prospects, probably"
That rules out Lackey tagging along with Theo, but doesn't rule out the first half of today's earlier article.

Whatever the compensation is,
if the deal goes down, I hope it’s a something that the Sox can use. Whether it helps the Sox now, as in a major prospect that they could place in the line up or rotation, or maybe a prospect at a position the Sox are strong at, so the Sox could make a trade for something useful.
Doubtful, they would fall under 'major players'.
Can hope for it, but I don’t see it happening. My expectations are around the level of Balcom-Miller, maybe a couple players at that level, who would fit in somewhere near the bottom of our top 20 prospects lists. Players who could become something, but are a few years out.

The only way they would be
‘major players’ is if we got the major league ready player, which I don’t think will happen, but it would be nice. But if we got say an outfielder that’s a year or two away, that would free up Reddick or Kalish, or an infielder, may free up Lowrie, or a pitcher, may free up one of the young pitchers, and not kill the depth of the organization if we needed to use one of those players in a trade for something useful.

We have millions of outfielders that are a year or two away
we don’t need any more.

That's why we could
use one or two to trade for things that are useful for the team.

My thoughts on compensation:
I’m going to try to be fair, which is difficult to do because we don’t usually see deals like this, but what I would like to see come over from Chicago is one of these four packages:
1. Ryan Dempster- Probably not gonna happen, Cherington would have to send over more than Theo to get this deal done.
2. Randy Wells- More likely to happen than Dempster, still pretty unlikely
3. Andrew Cashner- Not sure why he didn’t start the year in the rotation, Hendry must not have been high on him.
4. Trade pieces- singe and double A prospects with high upside, but low floors. I consider these guys “gamblers pieces.” Basically, they’re trade fodder that you hope don’t turn into superstars. The later versions of Brandon Moss and Craig Hanson are examples of these guys used correctly.

Figured it would be prospects.
But it doesn’t mean we need to accept mediocre prospects.

Which is a mistake...
Way too reactionary after the worst September collapse ever… this is painful to watch.
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.
Wait ’til next year!
Tito and Theo potentially leaving hasn't been reactionary in the least bit.
Both are leaving on their own. Tito didn’t want to come back and asked to have his option declined and Theo is asking to leave the Sox and join the Cubs. Generally these are requests that are routinely granted by any club no matter the circumstance. Firing Tito and trading Theo away would have been reactionary, this ain’t that.
I just don’t think we’re going to get anything real out of this because ownership has already said something to the affect of “if he doesn’t want to work here anymore, we won’t stand in his way and keep him here.” Which is why I think a couple mid-level prospects will be the compensation, the bulk making up for the quality.

Yeah I agree
I suspect that the Henry & Co. are not going to put their foot down and refuse to let him out of his contract just because of the compensation.
I understand trying to leverage the situation, but look at it from an owner’s point of view. Do you really want a lame duck GM in place in charge of your personnel decisions when you KNOW he is going to another team next year? I know Theo has pride, but any bad contract or bad trade that would occur would be of zero concern to him once he leaves.

Theo Goodbye already
Who in their right mind is it that put the idea that Theo is some baseball God and that Boston can’t win without him? Given the open checkbook approach the ownership has provided, I don’t thinkTheo did all that good of a job, let alone that he was some savior of Red Sox nation. A lot of mistakes were made from the very generous check book the owners gave Theo to play with. Over all I have not been impressed, and to expect that Chicago would take Lackey or Crawford or give us some great player in return is equally insane! Let Theo go we need a change, whatever we get is gravey, we still have the ownership team that is comitted to winning and that is where it all begins and ends anyway, everything else works around that. Remember we are still the team that has not stayed healthy and has finished 3 rd and missed the playoffs 2 years running. Thats not winning!
No offense...
But attitudes like yours—two years in a row with no playoffs despite the team almost reaching them both times—is a testament to what Theo and the current ownership have done for the team. The fact that any Red Sox fan has expectations anywhere near what yours appear to be shows the profound change (for the better) which has occurred.
Theo and our FO were at one point fairly lonely in baseball in terms of using advanced metrics and generally using smart player evaluation techniques. In recent years, this has become much more widespread, and one could argue that Theo’s edge has dulled, albeit if only because others have become smarter as well. I’d imagine his replacement (likely Cherington) will employ similar methods, but to deny his positive impact on this franchise is foolhardy beyond belief.
Because of what he, and yes, the ownership group, have built, the Red Sox don’t need to be smart all the time anymore, although it’s not like they won’t stop trying. This organization has become a financial juggernaut that can weather bad contracts.
Also, you can’t tell me at the beginning of the season you thought this team was going to miss the playoffs. No one was even thinking we might until mid-September, when Theo had very little power to do anything. This team seems to have been derailed primarily by off-field and injury issues, although mostly just a lot of untimely bad luck. I also think it’s intellectually disingenuous to bash the Crawford signing and spout the “WIN EVERY YEAR!!!!” line. I think the Crawford signing was a bad move, but mostly because it seemed excessive and that it could handcuff the Sox in the future, not because I thought he’d be replacement level. He’s a 3 WAR player at his worst—absolutely nobody saw this coming, and those who claim they did say so for completely stupid, baseless reasons.
Sorry if your comment was meant to be casual, but I’m really tired of some of the intellectually lazy Monday morning quarterbacking going on regarding Theo’s recent tenure, as well as the incredibly entitled attitudes of some fans lately. I’m only 22, and I only really started following the team obsessively since 2003ish, but I feel like an old man when I hear some fans’ attitudes. We’ve been blessed with something—twice—which many lifelong Sox fans never witnessed. Ever. And you are whining because we missed the playoffs two years in a row.
There’s this team about 100 miles south that is always accepting fans who expect to win everything every year, not realizing that the beauty of baseball is in its unpredictability, and no matter how good your team may seem on paper, some things can snowball and conspire against it. So you just have to accept that and hope the team can make it next year—and they definitely have the talent going forward. So you can either chin up, or go about your life like fans of that other team, constantly needing something special to explain the variability which is inherent in baseball after every SHOCKING1 ALDS loss.
Theo did a hell of a job
This seems like a bit of revisionist history because of what happened the past three years or so. Yeah, his big FA signings haven’t really panned out, but really, what have? From last year’s offseason, Adam Dunn flopped, Jayson Werth flopped, Carl Crawford flopped, Beltre was probably worth his contract, and Cliff Lee definitely was worth it, but any one of them can fail next year. The year before that, Matt Holliday has been worth his contract, but the other big names, John Lackey and Jason Bay have flopped. Again, it looks like the majority of FA signings just don’t work out. A-Rod and Teixiera are gradually wearing down. Sabathia has been worth it, but is about to get another 6/7 year deal and how long do you think he makes it before wearing down and being a burden on the payroll?
The truth is, Theo Epstein has done a lot of things with his “open checkbook” to improve the Sox, from FA deals to really spending on player development. Our farm system has really taken a turn for the better over Epstein’s tenure, and they’ve really committed a lot of time and energy into improving it. They’ve spent tons in the draft, have developed some great players, and still have lots of exciting players left in the system (albeit mostly in the lower to mid-levels). It really sucks that he’s apparently leaving now, when the team and organization seems to be a mess, but I really hope he finds a way/reason to stay and help fix it up.

You have no idea.
Martin Mayhew is what we all thought Theo was, but he’s doing it with a salary cap and a team that doesn’t really attract free agents right now.
