Over The Monster Fantasy Baseball?

Hello,

I have never played fantasy baseball, but this coming season I would like to try my hand at this.  I would like to play alongside my friends here @ OTM.  Can anyone fill me in on if there is a league here?  I seem to remember mention of this in the past.

Is there a cost?  Can anyone give me a little bit of information on how exactly fantasy baseball works. I will start studying right away, and be ready if you are willing to accept me into your league.

Thanks,

Sandy

we had a free yahoo league last year and will probably do one again I’m sure

by BobZupcic on Jan 8, 2011 8:54 PM EST reply actions

There were two last year

There was a yahoo league and a CBS league officially sponsored by SBN. I came to the realization that I’m not particularly fond of CBS’s fantasy set up and I probably wouldn’t do it again. Yahoo is the way to go I think.

I've done ESPN and CBS

and liked both, although i’ve never tired yahoo. I’d be interested in joining a league if spots are open. I’m guessing someone more organized than me will create a league in the coming weeks and make a FanPost invitation.

Another issue for me might be accessibility and memory

Yahoo is my homepage, so I remember to check my leagues, I never use sportsline or SI or ESPN so I usually forget I’m in a league there until it’s over.

I agree.

I will only participate if we do an ESPN league. I will not work with the Yahoo set up

It is really not that difficult.

Basically the players you draft, pick off waivers, or trade for earn you points (depending on the format of the league) through how they perform in real life.

I think you would pick it up pretty quickly.

I can't remember who set it up last year

David Harnden or BobZupcic. I think David. But I thought it was set up well. I say we start early this year so we get a good idea of who wants in and set the date on the draft.

I think we had 12 slots last year…I assume we can make that bigger if need be?

Yep

David Harnden set it up. I came up with the idea of an OTM Fantasy league and he set it all up on Yahoo. The League was superfun with the weekly writeup mostly done by Bloggy. I played a completly weird All in Pitcher strategy and drafted 10 SP in the first 12 rounds or so. ;) The strat worked out as my team made the most points in the regular season and i managed to reach the semifinals.

Anyway i’d be game for a league. I’d prefer ESPN over Yahoo, since Yahoo didnt manage to get the starts for the whole week in advance on a monday, that sucked.

We did head to head.

Roto is a bit different. You compete against the entire league at once in a number of statistical categories (such as ERA, OBP etc), and you earn a number of points dependent on your ranking within the league for each stat.

Yes. (On two separate leagues)

I find head to head to be more fun overall myself, especially since you can have playoffs which you can’t really do with roto.

With the number of saber-heads here at OTM I think there may also be enough interest in a roto league.

We did it pretty straightforward

For batters, you get 1 point for a single, two points for a double, etc…a point for an RBI or a run, and -.5 for a SO. Basically, most outcomes have a score associated with them. For pitchers, giving up a run was minus points, a strikeout was a point, stuff like that.

2 point principles:

1. is straight roto (rotisserie) where you have 12 players and compare 1 stats category (usually 5×5, means 5 batting stats: .avg, RBI, HR, SB, R and 5 pitching stats: K’s, WHIP, ERA, Saves and Wins) the best player in 1 category gets 12 points 2nd 11 etc. last place gets 1 point. All points of all stat categories get accumulated and the guy with the most points wins. Roto is pretty tough on newbies since you have to balance your team.

2. principles is simply points: you get a certain amount for singles, rbi, BB, runs HR etc for example we had last year: 1 point single, 2 points double. 3 points triple 4 points HR, 1 point RBI, 1 point Run and -0.5 for K for the batters etc. Similar for pitchers. Its somewhat easier to draft since you only have to get good players and dont need to watch all stat categorys.

These 2 principles can then be played in H2H (Head to Head) where you win or lose the week based on whether you have more points as your oponents or you won more stat categories or you can compare all that over a season and say guy with most overall points wins.

))<>((

by German Red Sox Fan on Jan 9, 2011 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

After playing for a while

I prefer the points – although its more for the diehards.

I think if you go H-H you go points
If we want a Roto option, which takes less time then just go cats

by BobZupcic on Jan 9, 2011 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

in yahoo for head2head

catagories like runs, rbis, hr, ave, wins, losses, saves, era and whip. If you have the most after a week in a catagory you get a point for the catagory. Most weeks it will be like 9-0, 8-1, 7-2 final score. then you compile that over the season and whichever has the most wins(points) you get to the playoffs. I have seen it all the way up to 20 catagories to score with.

Seems like we have a lot of interest

I wouldn’t go more than 14 teams in one league (12 is ideal) getting to 14 means drafting guys like Bill Hall in the later rounds.

Maybe if we have enough we can do 2 12 team leagues akin to last year

by BobZupcic on Jan 9, 2011 12:47 PM EST reply actions

Here are some options
(a) Split into two H-H point leagues based upon something – Age, area of the country, blood-type, etc.

(b) Have one 12 team H-H league and one 10-12 team Roto league. Roto is a bit less involved and some could go that route, plus a few of us could double up if need be

That’ll lead to disaster.

And not every draft guide is the same as well, so you can mix and match what you use and what you ignore. There are few players that all fantasy guys agree completely on.

I fear what fantasy stats may do to us as a group. We should all sign a waiver that states we won’t lose sight of the prize, wOBA rules all and wins still suck as a pitcher statistic.

Tweak it a bit maybe

Starters were a bit crazy IIRC.

Over the Monster -- SB Nation's Resident Red Sox Site
USG

by Ben Buchanan on Jan 11, 2011 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Part of this was because we were doing daily moves..

And we gave points for starters like we were in a “weekly” moves format (if anybody can follow this). This made it so that the best strategy was to load up on starters on the bench, and then swap in and swap out starters as the week went along and their “starts” came up.

I’m fine with this, just means that in our leagues starters have more value (which may be closer to real life baseball anyways?).

In one aspect I like weekly moves better because it adds a bit more strategy with 2-start pitchers, and then the playoffs don’t turn into an add-drop frenzy of starting pitching.

by upCHUCK on Jan 11, 2011 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

We can look into this

- weekly lineups vs. daily

I personlly didn’t like the errors nor the quality starts (The QS plus the Wins tended to vault starters). Really good pitchers (Halladay, Lincecum, Hernandez etc.) ended up about 100 pts better than your top position players (Bautista, Votto, Pujols)

by BobZupcic on Jan 12, 2011 10:08 AM EST up reply actions

I like the errors

but I can see your point about QS + W dilemma. I do like assigning points to both, though. Maybe we can just lessen the point amount for one or both?

this makes sense to me

What was the points breakdown like?

by wolf9309 on Jan 12, 2011 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

Here

Positional:
Runs – 1
Singles – 1
Doubles – 2
Triples – 3
Homers – 4
RBI – 1
SB – 2
CS – (-1)
E – (-2)
K – (-0.5)

Pitching
IP – 3
W – 4
CG – 10
SV – 6
BSV – (-3)
SO – 1
H (-1)
ER – (-2)
BB – (-1)
HBP – (-1)
WP -(-1)
HLD – 3
QS – 4

by BobZupcic on Jan 12, 2011 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Pitchers had more value in general

Highest Positional player was Pujols (668 pts) while Halladay was the highest pitcher (837 pts)

Another example was that Brett Myers (582 pts) scored more than Josh Hamilton (530 pts)

I think alot had to do with the QS, seeing as even moderate to above average pitchers can pile those up

by BobZupcic on Jan 12, 2011 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

Seems like

You’d almost have to add losses to pitchers or bump up the penalties

nothing for walks for positional players?

And as stupid of stats as they both are, I think credit for wins needs to go along with a penalty for losses. In the CBS one (which was weekly) Pujols was worth 676 and Halladay was worth 698.

Here was our breakdown:
1B – Singles 1 point
2B – Doubles 2 points
3B – Triples 3 points
BB – Walks (Batters) 1 point
CS – Caught Stealing -1 point
HP – Hit by Pitch 1 point
HR – Home Runs 4 points
KO – Strikeouts (Batter) -0.5 points
R – Runs 1 point
RBI – Runs Batted In 1 point
SB – Stolen Bases 2 points
pitchers:
BBI – Walks Issued (Pitchers) -1 point
ER – Earned Runs -1 point
HA – Hits Allowed -1 point
HB – Hit Batsmen -1 point
INN – Innings 3 points
K – Strikeouts (Pitcher) .5 points
L – Losses -5 points
QS – Quality Starts 3 points
S – Saves 7 points
W – Wins 7 points

I like how you guys had W/L worth less and I like the charge for errors (though I think 1 pt may be more reasonable). I don’t really like holds myself.

by wolf9309 on Jan 12, 2011 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

by Bloggy on Jan 12, 2011 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

Personally, I kinda liked them being worth the same as a single

because a single being more valuable in kind of taken care of with the fact that they can much more easily get an RBI with a single than with a walk.

by wolf9309 on Jan 12, 2011 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

Disagree

A single is a bit more valuable in actual game play as it can move a runner from first to third or from 2nd to third or even 2nd to home. Since it’s more valuable on the field, it should be more valuable in the pool.

The fact that they can also get a point for an RBI is irrelevant, in my opinion. You get points for a HR and for the RBI, as well.

it’s crazy how the reaction changes depending on the region. When I was in ATL for christmas, everything closed down for a few days due to an inch of snow.
It took 15 inches to get school cancelled in MA, and they’ll be right back at it tomorrow. I prefer school to close anytime there’s even a possibility of snow!

True or False

Atlanta has 8 city plows? I heard that somewhere.

in all seriousness, I did see a story online about Atlanta only having 8 plows. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was true, they’ve hardly had reason to until now

2) Either works for me really.

Question about weekly vs daily

since I’ve only done this once before and it was weekly- if you do it daily, does that mean that every day you can swap the starters you have (so if you have reserve starters, you can get a silly amount of starts each week?). I guess it doesn’t matter too much either way, that just seems weird to me if that’s the case, but I love the idea of changing the lineup every day.

Really, fine with either, just curious.

by wolf9309 on Jan 12, 2011 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

I would vote daily, but with limited starts.

Also, just for the record, ESPN was free last year. Had a league at school. But if I may say, I preferred Yahoo.

I agree

Limited starts would be great

by superdaveyboy on Jan 13, 2011 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

I also played a CBS league last year with almost the same scoring and to prevent that

“pitch and ditch” strategy you could only have 60 innings pitched. After that you got -3 points for every IP, which makes it risky to start mediocre pitcher once you’ve reached 60, since they get minus points more often than plus points.

I dont know whether you can limit the amount of IP on Yahoo this year, you definitly could’n last year.

by German Red Sox Fan on Jan 13, 2011 12:42 AM EST up reply actions

That sounds reasonable to me

I already spent enough time last year working on my roster while at work, and that was with weekly updates. If we went daily with no cap I’d be fired within the month.

by South Coast Ghost on Jan 13, 2011 7:49 AM EST up reply actions

I vote yahoo

never did an espn one except for football and I didnt like it at all.

by Jason A on Jan 13, 2011 10:04 AM EST up reply actions

My preference

ESPN (it’s free, contrary to what a lot of people around here seem to think).

Weekly lineups, so we don’t dedicate our lives to switching starting pitchers in and out.

Head to head league, with point scoring.

by Schulz on Jan 13, 2011 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

1. I prefer Yahoo. I find that i forget to check leagues on other sites. But I’m a “go with the flow” kinda guy, so it won’t bother me much if we don’t use yahoo

2. I could go either way

by superdaveyboy on Jan 13, 2011 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

Yahoo! is my favorite

I’ve mostly played roto, last years CBS h2h was the only time I’ve done that and it was weekly. I like the idea of daily since sometimes a guy would get injured the first day of the week and I couldn’t take him out, but weekly wasn’t bad.

by brogshan on Jan 13, 2011 7:59 AM EST reply actions

Once the final 24 is established it might make sense to do some votes on the format of the league and draft times?

I’m not sure if we can limit polls here on OTM to certain people? Would potentially have to use a 3rd party site. I know CBS has the poll option but off the top of my head I don’t think ESPN or Yahoo do. Could also just have separate fanposts dedicated to peoples votes on the issues at hand.

by upCHUCK on Jan 13, 2011 8:00 AM EST reply actions

I think an external poll is a good idea.

“The Final 24” (~!!) could all send an email to BobZed, and he could email the link. That way, it’s all accurate.

This from an article on Yahoo

Tips are based on a standard head-to-head scoring format: 1 point/single, 2 points/double, 3 points/triple, 4 points/HR, 3 points/SB, .5 points/walk, 1 point/RBI, 1 point/Run, 1 point/strikeout, 2 points/inning pitched (SP), -1 point/earned run, -.25 points/walk issued, -.25 points/hit allowed, 8 points/win, 8 points/save

by BobZupcic on Jan 13, 2011 7:04 PM EST reply actions

3pt stolen base?

And i complained about 2! I think it should be based on the actual value it has in the game. A single and a stolen base is not worth the same as two doubles. On that note, a walk should be 1 point, and maybe a penalty for GIDP
