Even with Lee's struggles lately?

Shouldn’t it be Felix?

Lester’s three straight starts with 10Ks are solid too… but no consideration for Buchholz, pending the way he finishes the season?

It should be Felix, but he won't get it because he isn't the media darling.

Grienke was too good last year, so they HAD to give it to him.

I have him on my Fantasy Team...

So, just looking at his struggles over the last month there… statistically. I realize you can absorb a bad start or two over the season, but the last 30 days?

29.1 innings of 8.28 ERA and 1.60? Doesn’t that knock him out of the race??

by AlohaSox on Sep 7, 2010 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

It's important to consider

How those runs actually scored.

Maybe the voters won’t consider FIP and xFIP, but I certainly will.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Sep 7, 2010 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah... I'm looking at stats.

But I haven’t seen the games, so not aware of the hard luck runs scored. I’m still learning my sabermetrics, so haven’t looked at those either.

by AlohaSox on Sep 7, 2010 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

My problem with FIP is

that it’s on an ERA scale. I know it only takes into account HR, BB, K,. I know ERA is a bad stat, but it’s a better representation of what actually happened, not what should have happened. I’d prefer to use BB/9, HR/9, or K/9 instead of FIP. MVPs of other sports don’t try to neutralize the other player’s on the field. I just don’t like the way FIP is presented because people have the tendency to say this is what should have been, but that didn’t happen.

Twitter: @BoldandBrash

by BoldandBrash on Sep 7, 2010 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd say that's more xFIP

So ERA is only a matter of “what happened” more than “what should have happened” in terms of runs. That’s it.

FIP is more a matter of “what happened” over “what should have happened” in actual pitching performance. He DID strike out these guys, he DID keep the free passes down, he DID keep the ball in the park.

We’re saying the same thing, basically, just different interpretations of its meaning.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Sep 7, 2010 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

If you believe wins are a real baseball stat that actually has correlation to quality of

pitching, you are an idiot, and I don’t respect any of your opinions about baseball. Wins are completely bullshit and useless. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that, just some common sense.

No Crawford?

Is that due to declining skills, having to overpay, his affiliation with the Devil Rays… or because of the plethora of outfield talent we have waiting in the wings?

You're crazy he'll hit 20 homers and steal 60 bases.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Sep 7, 2010 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

All of that probably.

He is better than Ellsbury in the sense that he has more power. We haven’t seen what Ells can do in LF for a full year in order to compare him with Crawford. So because of that, I think that Ells can make it close enough to be worth it because of his contract. I have heard that Crawford’s skill will age gracefully, but I don’t believe that. Do you want to be paying Crawford 16-17 mil, 3, 4, or 5 years from now?
