Killing Paps value
As they continue to parade Paps out there to blow saves and get beat up, they decrease his trade value. Make Bard the closer, save Paps arm and put him on the block. Tito has too much trust in this guy. I know he has been invaluable for a while, but this is a "what have you done for me today" business. It's time to set up for 2011 with your current roster and see what fits where, 2010 season is done. The Rays and Yanks are not folding and this team is not going on a tear. Time to smell the coffee

OK, let's forget Paps' past, his name, the closer rep.
The guy is still a good reliever. Who are we going to replace him with? If you don’t feel confident with him on the team, then how are you gonna feel with him somewhere else?If we could get somebody better via trade or FA, then why not hang onto him and make the team that much better?

Paps isn't going anywhere.
They won’t get good value for a $12 million struggling closer. Better to arb him for one last year and then take draft picks if he signs long-term elsewhere.
1-year deals are worth quite a bit more $$$ than longer deals in a way, after all.

Ben well said...Paps stays and Bard stays past that we need an overhaul in the pen
Yup I know that statement is obvious – I just keep repeating it hoping we actually do the overhaul. If we don’t then it will be ugly next year.
Some other issues about 2011 (I am already thinking about Winter Trades and resignings…)
1. Who has some good ideas about the bullpen makeover? We are not the only ones who need to revamp – do you think Theo tries more than just a few junk heap retreads who can find their stuff again?
2. I have to believe Theo resigns Beltre and V-Mart – if not then who will we get?
3. What about Papi? If he resigns for how long? One year or three year deal – it is risky past 1 year.
4. What about Tek? Will he stay in Boston? Or, is Salty gonna get a shot?
5. Wake has another year on his contract – but, is he done or will he be used as an insurance policy? I know for the innings he can provide he is cheap – but, he seems to struggle to get outs now…
6. How about Lowrie? Does he stay healthy and start over Scutaro?
7. How about Ells – is he back or trade bait?
8. Lowell is done
9. How will Yuke, Pedroia, Ells, and Cameron recover? That is half the starting defense in the field.
10. Beckett, Lackey and Dice K – our season rests on their arms…all have sweet contracts and question marks for next year

Paps is frustrating, but in a 'pen fulla duds, he's not the big problem.
I’d like to bring back all three: VMart, Beltre, and Papi. Beltre is the toughest one to sign to a deal we are comfortable with, I think.
Tek is an interesting one. His days as a valuable every day guy are behind him…but would he want to be an every day guy somewhere? I can’t remember…is he a FA this year? I’d take a healthy Tek over Salty, personally.
I think Ells comes back. I don’t feel it is at all fair to judge his value based on this season or parts thereof. Lowrie/Scutaro should be an interesting dynamic come spring training and the first part of the year. Beckett/Lackey/Dice-K…man, we need those three to come around next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if Wakefield decides to take the money and run. That’s why they restructured the deal, right? So he is guaranteed to get paid next year.
Not concerned about Yook and Pedroia…or even Cameron. Ells, maybe, but not much.
And Lowell is done. And good for him. All the best to Mikey Lowell.
Galactus does as he pleases. Because Galactus is drunk.

V-Mart is the key
I see V-Mart has the absolute first priority. There are just not many options if they lose him. He is your #3 hitter, a switch-hitting starting catcher and can fill in at 1B a couple times a week. That is a powerful bag of tools.
I’m assuming Beltre is gone, but they Sox can sign Inge for 3B or move Youk to third and sign Overbay. Probably not as good as Beltre, but at least there are options out there.
He hasn't hit like a number 3 hitter...this year.
he should have been like 6 or 7.

yeah that's what I've thought
he’s been a good hitter, but it’s not like he’s the best hitter on the team
As far as #2 goes.
If the Sox don’t re-sign Beltre, I have to assume that Youk is going to move to third. I know nobody likes the idea, but he’s a better player than the other 3b options on the market. After that, I think Paul Konerko would be a good fit on a two year deal until Rizzo or Lars is ready to come up and take over for him. VMart has to be resigned, there isn’t an option on the market right now with Kurt Suzuki having signed an extension, and he can become the DH when Ibarra or T-Fed is ready to come up and “ball.”
If I was your math homework I'd be really hard and you'd be doing me on your desk.
I'm a 7 WAR player in bed.
T-fed's offense might be a bigger question than Lavarnway's defense...

Papps will be back
The “trade Papplebon” discussion are idiotic. We all agree the Sox now have a weak bullpen. We all agree that Papplebon has not been the “lights out” closer we have seen in the past, but he is still a very good closer/bullpen arm. How does the subtraction of Papplebon help? The only part of the bullpen that worked, for the most part, all year is the Bard/Papplebon duo. Papplebon will be the closer next season. The Sox will pay the Arb money and then buy a whole year before they decide what to do in the bullpen. I’m betting they move Bard into the role and let the Angels or another team sign Papplebon. Assuming Papplebon does not implode further in 2011, he will get a 3 year $30 mil. deal from someone, probably not the Red Sox.
If you don't want Paps, what makes you think anyone else does?
