Trade With Dodgers

The Red Sox and Dodgers both have interesting off-seasons coming up. What if they helped each other out? They matchup in a couple of places. Take a look:

Star-divide

Red Sox get: SU Jonathan Broxton

                        C Russel Martin

                        CF Matt Kemp

1B James Loney (and Youk would play 3rd)

Dodgers get: CL Jonathan Papelbon

                         CF Jacoby Ellsbury

                         C Salty

                         1B Lars Anderson

                         Prospect

This would put Boston at:

SS Scutaro

2B Laser Show

3B Youk

DH Papi

CF Kemp

RF Drew

1B Loney

LF Kalish/Cameron

C Martin

CL Bard, SU Broxton

also unsure why we would want to

move youk over to third in place of James “Kotchman” Loney or why we would want Russell “I used to be able to hit” Martin.

Sounds like a fair trade. Everyone loses!

This might be generous

Kemp for Ells- equal
Pap for Broxton- equal
Salt for Martin- Matin hasn’t been great recently, but I’ll still say LA lost here.

Lars for Loney- Loney isn’t good, but He is a current major league, so I’ll say LA loses here

That prospect had better be pretty damn good.

Martin has forgotten how to hit and Loney isn't great,

so if that prospect would be a top guy ( Kelly, Kalish, Rizzo) then it isn’t as much of a one sided deal as you might think.

I'm saying it would take a good prospect for LA to do the deal

When i say the deal, I mean the full deal including Kemp and Broxton.

Like I said, I was being very generous.

Kemp sucks this year, so 09 Ells is better than 10 Kemp.

Broxton is not better than Papelbon

If one is looking at a premier tommy john candidate by his mechanics and the weight he is carrying, Broxton is up there… I see Paps breaking down on another team because he has a pretty delicate shoulder.

Once again, throwing very high heat isn’t the money pitch, it is the location. The great Mariano is still around, because of one thing, late movement of his money pitch..

Broxton has a higher WHIP and one less blown save right now than Papelbon. I hardly thinks he is better than Paps…

Now, if Billy Wagner doesn’t want to retire after the 2010 season, perhaps the Sox should see what they can offer him…

by superferret on Sep 4, 2010 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

FFS, what is the obsession with blown saves?

WHO CARES? It’s an arbitrary stat. IIRC, a save situation is less than a 4 run margin. So if the closer went in with a 3 run lead and gave up 2 runs, he would still get a save. But if he went in with t a 1 run lead and gave up 1 run, then it’s a blown save. Now which performance is worse?

Papelbon- BABIP: .251, K/9: 9.05, BB/9 3.43, HR/9: .94, WAR: .9

Broxton- BABIP: .367, K/9: 11.29, BB/9: 3.11, HR/9: .33, WAR: 1.8

Broxton’s peripherals look much better.

Indeed

Don’t blame Broxton for bad luck.

At first I blew this off as craziness and I think some of you did also.

You could make the case that this is a fair trade or even an LA win.

Broxton > Paps

Kemp > Ells- Although, Kemp is having a down year

Martin > Salt- This one is kinda strange. Martin’s offense is nowhere to be found, so LA could put Salt in RIGHT NOW and not lose any OFFENSIVE production. Martin does have a good arm.

Loney = Lars- I think Lars could definitely be as good as Loney if not better, but it might take 1-2 mores years in AAA. The problem is Loney is the current LA starter, but I’m sure they could find somebody to OPS around .750 in the meantime.

Now the prospect comes into play. It would have to be one of our top 3: Kelly, Kalish, or Rizzo. The question is do LA’s losses equal the price tag of a top prospect?

If it is between those three, I would think that the Sox would perhaps be wiling to give Rizzo, and perhaps make up for the loss of the two 1B prospects with moving Lavaranway to 1B full time… I’d be cool with that, even if Rizzo stopped slumping and Lavaranway stopped raking

Weiland isn't good, and Tazawa is coming off of TJS.

That would never work.

OK, but just saying "prospect" usually doesn't imply a blue chipper. It's like a throw in.

You specifically name guys like Kalish, Kelly, and Rizzo. Consider that he named Lars. That suggests the prospect is below Lars’ level.

Either way, though, I’d say there’s a lot of “no point” here. Why do the Red Sox WANT Loney? Why do they want Martin for that matter? It’s a ridiculous deal which is just sort of “Let me throw out equal positions here.”

I don't think this trade would help at all unless Kemp went back to his 5 WAR ways.

Maybe if that prospect is a C level guy. It would be like trading for a closer upgrade and a chance for a great CF, but it comes with guys that would most likely be non factors. Well, at least non factors after next year.

dream on

The Red Sox are NOT trading Papplebon or Ellsbury. OK, we’re all a little dissapointed by thier 2010 performance and contributions, but we are talking about the closer and the starting CF/leadoff hitter for a playoff contending team. And just what is the value of either right now? OK, the Mets may fork over a decent prospect for one year of Papplebon if they can cancel K-Rod’s contract (unlikely), but very few if any other teams are going to give up value for a one year $10+mil. guy that is certainly testing FA. Ellsbury is coming off a injury-plagued season, and I guess he would have some value, but he is a young, still promising player that is under the Sox control for another 3-4 years, and the Sox are not the Marlins, they don’t mind paying arbitration numbers.
