Game 134: Red Sox @ Orioles

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles, Sep 2, 2010 7:05 PM EDT

Apparently Daisuke Matsuzaka was running sprints four hours before tonight's game in the middle of extreme heat.

I'm gonna wager a guess and say that boy's a little crazy.

He starts tonight against the O's Brad Bergesen:

Evening

Back-and-forth with the Pats tonight for me.

Thanks for the heads up...

I’ve got the Pats on TV here in Hawaii… so happy it isn’t tape delayed. They always delay football on network TV.

Man, I'm going to miss Beltre when he's gone.

Hopefully that won’t be until 2014 or so.

How about?

Is this where we finally go on a tear? Another series win here is a step in the right direction (completely ignoring the A’s getting swept by C.C.)

No

We win a series against the Orioles. This is not some sign of a miracle. It should have been a common occurrence this year.

Shhh -- don't say anything.

Low pitch counts with Dice-K are like no-hitters with anybody else. Start talking about it and it’s gone.

So... ideal OF next season?

Ellsbury in LF, Kalish in CF and Drew in RF?

Of course, that requires Cameron someplace else, but…

by AlohaSox on Sep 2, 2010 7:54 PM EDT reply actions

He could be the 4th OF or something.

When life gives you questions, Google has answers.

by Bento Box on Sep 2, 2010 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, Kalish probably starts in AAA, right?

So Cameron is the Opening Day starter in CF, with the hope that Kalish takes over by the All Star Break, allowing us to trade Cameron at the deadline?

by AlohaSox on Sep 2, 2010 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course...

… I originally thought Cameron would look like a monster in Fenway, so maybe a healthy Cameron next year will look a whole lot different than the guy we saw this season.

Scutaro, though… I really wish we’d kept Alex Gonzales instead of signing Scutaro, and I haven’t changed my opinion on that, injury or no. I thought he had a career year last season, and cashed in on it.

I was going to do work tonight...

but watching the Sox and having a beer is so much more appealing. Don’t care to listen to the MASN announcers, but anything’s better than fox or espn.

ok i will ask this ?

who is this guy pitching for us tonight ? and what have they done with dice k ?

Hey-O

Wow a win last night and Lester got it to boot, go figure.

And we’re 5-0 to boot right now…let’s hope we can keep this momentum going…

by Raj Ghetia on Sep 2, 2010 8:10 PM EDT reply actions

Just Wondering About Dice-K

But had he not gotten injured this year, his conditioning was pretty darn good coming into the season yes? So do people think he actually could been decent this year and a bit more consistent than years past?

Call me crazy but I think he could have been quite the solid 3rd starter.

by Raj Ghetia on Sep 2, 2010 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

I think he looked a lot like 2008, in patches.

I didn’t think he got lucky in 2008, but pitched efficiently. That seems to be his issue. When he pounds the zone, he is a very solid #3… if not better than that.

by AlohaSox on Sep 2, 2010 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

He's been decent. (3.96 FIP this year.)

Still, the (4.64 xFIP) and (4.12 BB/9) are a bit troubling.

When life gives you questions, Google has answers.

by Bento Box on Sep 2, 2010 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Can you look at splits?

I wonder what that BB/9 looks like in the games he wins.

And whether there is a way to drive that point home through his translator.

by AlohaSox on Sep 2, 2010 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Er, I don't know how. I was looking at his contract earlier .. HOLY SMOKES.

Here are his perks:
perks: physical therapist, massage therapist, interpreter, 8 first-class round-trip airline tickets per year between Boston & Japan, spring training housing allowance of up to $25,000, Boston housing allowance of up to $75,000, one-time moving allowance of up to $35,000, use of Lincoln Town Car or similar car, Red Sox player ticket package, including 2 field box seats, team employee to assist Japanese media, uniform No. 18
agent: Scott Boras

I suddenly wanted to be Dice-K for a moment.

When life gives you questions, Google has answers.

by Bento Box on Sep 2, 2010 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow!

I had no idea.

I knew he was the $100 million pitcher (between the negotiating rights and the contract itself), but wow…

by AlohaSox on Sep 2, 2010 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Damn...

… thought it was quiet in here, and then I realized he had a no-no going.

Thought it was a perfecto until I remembered Lowell’s error, erased on the double play ball, so Dice K had faced the minimum.

by AlohaSox on Sep 2, 2010 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

Uh, Don

Where did Buchholz throw his no-no?

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Sep 2, 2010 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah.

When Ben said it was on, I went looking and found it out here in Hawaii too.

I seem to have the Patriots broadcast team too… all former Patriots players, all Patriots analysis… great fun for me out here. Not something I get much, unless MLB Network carries the NESN broadcast.

by AlohaSox on Sep 2, 2010 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

What is it with the 6th?

Beckett seems to blow up in the 6th, and I feel like Lackey’s done it a few times too…

Is that a reflection on Farrell… our guys not being conditioned to get through 6 innings? Regardless of pitch count, the 6th seems to bite several of our starters.

by AlohaSox on Sep 2, 2010 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

That's definitely a stretch.

“The sixth” isn’t something you can be conditioned to get through or not, really. Lines aren’t drawn so easilly.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Sep 2, 2010 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Obviously.

Just feels like a tough inning for us lately. That’s all. Beckett was solid through 4 or 5 the last couple times out, got lit in the 5th and again in the 6th in the first of those two, and again in the 6th in the second one.

I remember Pedro early on was a guy you got to in the first, or not at all. Later in his career, he seemed to fade in the 7th more than the 6th? Or is that just my rosy memory?

by AlohaSox on Sep 2, 2010 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup.

I thought that by adding a “thus far” to my post above I wouldn’t be tempting fate, but, alas, I was very wrong.

I don’t want to see him in the bullpen again next year. Am I just looking at the wrong samples? Like… wasn’t he the guy in the extra inning loss in Tampa over the weekend? I was watching that one live.

I think he has to put himself in these really difficult situations to generate enough adrenaline to close out the save.

Unfortunately, at times, they beat him when it’s this precarious.
