Game 133: Red Sox @ Orioles -- September 1, 2010

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles, Sep 1, 2010 7:05 PM EDT

So, here's a fun fact: If the Red Sox drop about 20 of their last games, they might be in position to have a protected first round pick!

Yay!

In all seriousness, though, it's September. And while that might not mean much of a playoff race this year, it does mean some interesting baseball that's very much worth watching. For instance, there's awards considerations. Can Jon Lester put together a great run to push his way up the Cy Young ladder? He'll get a shot against an Orioles team he has traditionally dominated tonight.

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2010 - Jon Lester 14-8 26 26 2 0 0 0 170.0 137 65 59 12 63 176 3.12 1.18

(Blah blah blah opposing pitcher)

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2010 - Jake Arrieta 4-6 15 15 0 0 0 0 83.0 88 52 47 8 46 39 5.10 1.61

And then there's looking to the future. September means call-ups. And it's not like we weren't already playing with our Triple-A team.

I don't think I'm alone when I say "Hell yeah, Lowrie!"

And also "Do better please, Kalish" I guess...

Go Sox! Players! But not necessarily the team!

Draft position!

Sorry, Baltimore.

Shouldn’t have fired your manager. Pittsburgh has that all wrapped up.

Two really good pitches from Arrieta back-to-back.

I gotta say, those don’t look like pitches from a low-K high-BB pitcher.

Crap.

Maybe it’s time to tone down the Lester for Cy Young chatter.

Cy Young?

How about no…

I wonder how John Farrell’s off-season will be…

by Raj Ghetia on Sep 1, 2010 7:32 PM EDT reply actions

I dunno.

As much as we’ve had failures, we’ve also had successes. And there’s the question of how much is reasonably his fault (Beckett’s injuries, Lackey just plain declining and coming to the AL East).

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Sep 1, 2010 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

successes?

I think the failures outnumber the successes.

And some successes (like Lester) are inexplicably inconsistent. It’s hard to see what value Farrell adds to the team.

Lackey has only pitched this poorly with Farrell as his pitching coach. And a lot of people the Sox have released in the past couple years have done much better once they left town.

by RickD on Sep 1, 2010 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly What I'm Thinking

Which makes me really wonder now. I really thought he was good but maybe he’s not as great. Do keep in mind though Lackey and Beckett both are stubborn as donkeys and Beckett was on the DL for a while this year.

It’s Lester’s troubles that bother me. Can’t say it’s all on Farrell as the player has to take some responsibility.

2010 Reminds Me

Of the 2006 season when they didn’t make the playoffs. It’s just been prolonged frustration this year, whereas 2006 was pretty much over middle-late summer.

by Raj Ghetia on Sep 1, 2010 7:40 PM EDT reply actions

some of us just watch game to game

We’re looking at short-term goals without worrying about long-term ones. If you think the games aren’t worth watching unless they can make the playoffs, why are you watching if you’ve already given up on them?

by RickD on Sep 1, 2010 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I am sorry if I hurt your feeling with my negative attitude.

But I was the one who had been trying to be optimistic.
Of course I will root for Red Sox for every game, even if they couldn’t make the playoff.

Please just understand me for expressing some frustration here. It’s just because it was just a few days ago that I finally admitted that it’s really really difficult to get a wild card.

by Kenmore Sq on Sep 1, 2010 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Woo!

I will have to say for next season, I can’t WAIT to see how our MLB ready prospects do. Though we can’t really call Nava & Kalish prospects anymore. Plus can’t wait to see how Lowrie does too.

There’s some positive for you.

by Raj Ghetia on Sep 1, 2010 7:52 PM EDT reply actions

Kalish was 4 for 36, and Ortiz was 0 for 8 before today.

Drew was 7 for 43, so if today is the day everyone gets back to work day, I am calling that Drew will give us RBI today, too!

I swear I just heard the “Mario Starman” invincibility song when V-Mart went to talk with Lester.

It's Lugo.

Are we still paying Lugo’s contract? Can we lay claim to the two runs he’s scored tonight and make it 5-3 in the Sox’ favor?

Huh? They went from 12 to 15 after the first season (see: when they knew they were going to be able to stay on the air)

Other than that, the jump was from 15-16 around season 4, and then to 17 lately. Not much of a difference from season 2 to season 7.

There were weeks without

some contestants being shown. Plus, so many of the challenges were braindead, and I just didn’t have any interest in either contestants or challenges after Fabio was eliminated. Never went back.

At least Hell’s Kitchen is a guaranteed fustercluck.

As I was typing before that...

Ryan Lavarnway has more than doubled his Double-A walk total in his last 11 games. His numbers in Double-A are now rather better than his numbers in Salem were.

People in BBS’ fanpost putting him out of the top-10 are INSANE

Sure.

Take tonight’s game happening to the Red Sox, subtract two world series wins and eight playoff appearances since 1998, add thirteen consecutive losing seasons and Peter Angelos and you’ll be just about there.
