Jose
Has walked in 4 straight games now in Lowell, sporting a .520 OBP in his 7 game rehab so far. I like that.

when will he be back in Portland?
By the 26th?

Not sure, probably a Ben question.
His rehab just started.

40-Man this offseason
Reading a Press Herald Article:
OTHER RED SOX minor leaguers (including Navarro) will be available for the Rule 5 draft if Boston does not place them on the 40-man roster. They include former Sea Dogs Lars Anderson and Bubba Bell, now with Pawtucket; Sea Dogs catcher Luis Exposito; and two hot prospects in Salem, pitcher Stolmy Pimentel and infielder Oscar Tejeda.
So presumably we’d want to protect Navarro, Lars, Exposito, Pimentel and Tejeda. Who do we drop? Brown, Patterson, Hall, who else?

Varitek – retire
Lowell – retire
Okajima – retire to play back in Japan
Atchison – DFA
McDonald – trade
Cash – DFA
Well nearly all those spots will be filled again since they’re mostly all 25 man roster spots. We’re going to need another backup catcher, Exposito isn’t there yet. We’re going to need a backup infielder, Lars isn’t there yet. Okajima and Atchison will need to be replaced in the bullpen, then we’d need another backup OF and Cash, well that spot is pretty legit. These guys are going to all need to be on the 40 man roster, but they aren’t quite ready for the 25 man yet.

What Rogue Said
plus Cash and McDonald are on one year contracts and will be FA’s anyways. I don’t know why we’d DFA Atchison when we have super cheap options for him and he’s served a purpose decently for the most part
Exactly
We’ll probably do our damnedest to sign Darnell too. Or at least I hope they do. The man came in and was a pretty reliable backup outfielder. But we’ll see given the success of Nava and Kalish.
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
Or altenatively
Are Pimentel and Tejeda at any risk of being selected? Since they aren’t in AA ball presumably it would be a major risk for another team to add them to their own roster.

Pimentel is a big time prospect
I dont risk him being claimed

I mean
The thing is that if they take him, he HAS to be on their 25 man active roster the ENTIRE season and cannot be optioned or DFA’ed without being offered back. So it’s a massive risk for a pitcher who is 20 and isn’t even past A ball yet.

no, he has to be on the 40-man?

Well my source is wikipedia so take it with a grain
but:
If chosen in the Rule 5 draft, a player must be kept on the selecting team’s 25-man major league roster for the entire season after the draft—he may not be optioned or designated to the minors.

There’s also a AAA and AA portion of the draft where both players would be snapped up immediately.

I doubt it
Bubba is a fan favorite at all, but he is almost 28 years old and really inconsistent, ranging from an awesome 2007 OPS of 1.120 to less than .600 last year. He’s really a non prospect at this point.
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
I know he is a "non=prospect"
but so is Nava, do you let him go too?
and I can see Bell being an MLB 4th-OF somewhere someday after seeing him play a lot. He could be a valuable player, if he ever stayed healthy.

Nava
Is different, he tore up every single level of minor league pitching he was at and then continued it into Boston.
Bubba displayed incredible power that one year in 2007 but has failed to set himself apart during any other, I mean, being a hard worker and all is nice, but it’d be better if there were actually results, he doesn’t produce a lot of results, besides some plate discipline. He really has no future with the team, between Kalish and Reddick, Nava, Ellsbury and then the guys behind them, Westmoreland hopefully, Lin. There are a lot of guys we have with futures, Bubba looks to be a career minor leaguer that fans go to see.
In all likelihood he won’t even be selected.
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
I dont think Bubba will ever play here
But dont you think a lower market team like Washington or Houston he could be a fourth OF, maybe?

Maybe
But it isn’t like we’d get anything of value for him, just another player a lot like him, a PTBNL or cash.
Darnell would probably get us a little more, and as much as I ripped on him early in the year he’s actually been a pretty consistent backup for us and never really regressed to that level we thought he might end up at, which would be Cash-ian.

Yeah, Ive liked DMac a bit actually
He is a good MLB 4th OF and I think he will stick around somewhere.
I could see Bell in a similer situation down the road.
And what is the temporary inactive list? I cant find any info on it.

cbabaseball.com says
A player with an excused absence to perform personal obligations is placed on this list. The player must be on the Temporarily Inactive List for a minimum of three days before the player can be reinstated to the Active List.
A player on the Temporarily Inactive List does not count against a Club’s Active List limits, but does count against its Reserve List limits.
Still not sure what it means.

As far as the minors are concerned, it basically acts as a free place to stash players during a roster crunch.

Our whole catching situation
Is best described as a cluster-f%#&. None of the prospects are ready, Cash blows ass, Dusty isn’t tremendously better and Wagner, well I don’t know what he’s up to these days.
It does suck that Cash is apparently the best we can do.

I've heard AA tossed around.
He’ll have Expo there to teach him and Jose a fellow Cuban as company. Seems like a comfort thing since he’s recently defected and doesn’t really speak English yet. Where is talent level is at? No one knows except the Sox who have been watching him in Ft. Meyers for what feels like an eternity now.
