The 2011 Boston Red Sox, after steamrolling their way to a 120-42 record in the regular season

Were swept out of the ALCS when the opposing team employed the “Bogar” strategy, simply throwing the ball home as fast as possible, knowing that Tim Bogar would wave anyone in from any base on any event.

I would take him on a 2 year deal, maybe maybe a 3 year deal.

First we have to take care of catcher and 3B. Plus, Werth might get 4 years from someone else. I don’t think Theo will go there.

Our own FA.

Beltre will be a huge risk, but there’s just no replacement for him.

We might let Victor walk if we can obtain Iannetta though. It might make good sense for us, too, since he’d bring in draft picks when he leaves.

Picks + an extra $13-15 million to spend elsewhere vs. the cost of Iannetta.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Aug 6, 2010 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd want Victor back over Beltre

I’d let Lowrie have a chance at being the 3B if Beltre wants too much, even though I prefer Lowrie as a utlity guy.

I think Beltre is going to be too much riding high on a great offensive year (on a contract year). I don’t think it’s realistic to expect that level of offensive production from him over a 3+ year contract.

You sign a backup IF over the offseason, certainly.

But you don’t plan around “what if your player gets hurt!” because then you allocate too many resources to backups.

Lowrie has only had one injury, I remind you. It seems like he’s injury prone, but so far he’s only as injury prone as any rookie who gets hurt.

That’s one of the reason when people say we are still in it because Dusty is coming back in a few weeks, I find it hard to see it has a major ray of hope, odds are he will struggle a little before he gets hot, time is something we don’t have so even a little struggling isn’t good.

Ortiz hits a bomb
Buchholz gives up a 2-run shot to Tex.
Then kicks ass
Vazquez gets in Cervelli’s way, Cervelli drops a popup.
Red Sox score 3 times thanks to a bunch of walks and a Scutaro double.
Kalish goes deep.
