Red Sox Trade Manny Delcarmen
According to WEEI's Alex Speier, the Red Sox have traded Manny Delcarmen and cash to the Colorado Rockies in return for pitching prospect Chris Balcom-Miller.
Here is Balcom-Miller's Baseball-Reference page.
The Manny D era is over in Boston and it's sort of sad. Everyone wanted to see Run MDC -- the local boy -- grow into a great reliever, but the Red Sox never saw any consistency out of him from season to season.
As far as Balcom-Miller is concerned, he is a 21-year-old righty who is pitching well at the A level this season. He has racked up 117 strikeouts to 19 walks in 108.2 innings of work.

Glad I checked before posting mine.
CBM seems like a pretty good prospect for a guy who’s fallen off the map as much as MDC. Not what we could have gotten about 15 months ago, but oh well.
Maybe Manny really can do it against the NL. We’ll see.
USG
CBM definitely has potential.
You guys should definitely be excited about him.

Sorry about MDC.
You guys should definitely be ‘meh’ about him.
But who knows, maybe the NL is just what he needs.

It's definitely a "change of scenery" move, something we've done a lot of the last few years.
So far, they’ve worked out for the most part (Jorge De La Rosa may be the most notable example).
As for CBM, he can definitely hit the majors on his current track record as a fifth starter in about 2-3 years, but that’s assuming he doesn’t hit a snag along his development. Most people project him as a 4-5 starter, I think he could hit 3 if he commands the groundball as well as he is capable. I wouldn’t expect the amount of k/bb that he’s put up so far, but who knows, it could be a new skill of his.

Should have traded him halfway through 2009
But once we didn’t, with the crap we have on this team’s pen, we may as well have held on and waited oee ifwe couldn’t build his stock.

We should've gotten rid of Okajima as a free gift...seriously?
Glad this guy is gone. So who will be called up? Robert Manuel? please…?
Always wanted MDC to do well
but clearly wasn’t working out. The guy we got for him looks like a great haul as far as potential goes.
Agreed. This isn't a bad deal.
And I think MDC will see some success in the NL, although Colorado is rough on any pitcher so adjust the numbers accordingly. Not only does the ball carry, but the outfield is so expansive that the OFs play in different zip codes. Result – increased doubles and triples as well as HRs.
I looked at CBM's peripherals, then this happened:

Good riddance MDC,
I hope our lineup sees you many times in the future. I don’t care where he’s from if he can’t pitch. He had a .220 BABIP and he still found a way to be terrible.

That's a fantastic return for Delcarmen.
If someone around here suggested this they would have been ripped. Very promising arm.

CBM has some good peripherals
But he has long been suspected to top out as a 4-5 starter. If the Red Sox are to have a rotation that a team with their payroll and prestige should bring them, CBM is probably going to have a difficult time breaking in as a full time starter. He is a low floor, relatively low ceiling prospect, ranked around 15th in the Rockies organization. I’m going to miss him though. I was intrigued for the same reasons you all are.

How do you figure he projects as a reliever?
Either way, though, if nothing else, this kind of guy is easy value in a trade.

im not sure he will strike out enough to be a huge bullpen asset
His best shot is as a BOR innings eater who gets a lot of ground balls.

"long been suspected to top out as a 4-5 starter"
Don’t make up stuff.
Newman said, “Balcolm-Miller is an excellent candidate to settle in as a back of the rotation innings eater with the Rockies.”
A 4/5 guy is not his ceiling, and I don’t get where you got the “long been suspected” thing from.
CBM has very similar stuff/groundball tendencies/mechanics to Trevor Cahill who has been one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball this year.

If that's the case then I'm sorry Andrew Fisher.
I disagree with it, though.
In BA’s Top 20 Pinoneer League prospects, they called both his fastball and slider plus.
He is mowing dudez down left and right with extreme groundball tendencies, while not walking anyone.
There is absolutely no way that equates to a 4/5 ceiling.

Andrew writes the Rockies blog, Purple Row.
And we have all followed CB-M’s year pretty closely.
Yeah, probably an A-level overachiever with back of the rotation potential in our farm system. Intriguing prospect, but would never be in a position of priority given the other talent coming up for the Rockies.
On our end? Making a playoff push and need a right handed, mid-inning reliever to step in for the recently injured Manny Corpas. No viable AAA candidates, and we’ve had a lot of recent success trading for relievers late in the season (Russ Ortiz, Raphael Betancourt, etc.)
Our pitching coach has had a lot of success revitalizing careers, and Delcarmen seems like a great candidate with his fastball and curveball. He won’t see pressure innings this season, and that’s probably a good thing.
Thanks man.
Appreciate the clarification.

Good luck with him, sirs.
I’m all for MDC getting a chance to succeed so long as it’s not with us, the Yankees, etc.
The Changeup is what could make or break Manny a lot more than the curve, by the way.

not making stuff up
I’m not sure there’s a great deal of difference in "ceiling as a 4-5 starter: and “candidate to settle as a back of rotation starter”. In fact, I see that as essentially the same thing.
“long since considered” probably wasn’t the best word choice, since he was drafted just 14 months ago, but that has been his tag for about a year. I’m sure Keith Law and the like will chime in with this soon enough, but he’s a guy whose stats are better than his stuff/projection.
And he is not Trevor Cahill. CBM is very polished for his age. It doesn’t mean he can’t progress, but odds are against it.

Thanks dawg.
I see now.
BA says plus FB/plus SL.
His command AT 21 is already without a doubt plus.
That is a #2 ceiling no doubt.
We’re talking about ceiling here, not most likely outcome.
The only knock on CBM is average velo.
He more than makes up for average velo with his excellent movement, not unlike Cahill/Hudson/Leake.

just as a warning
There are some prospects where stats tell you all you need to know about them. CBM is not one of them.

Nice job Theo. 19 BB all season.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
I'm pretty sure MDC has had INNINGS where he's allowed 19 BBs!

haha that's what I thought
or at least had stretches where he allowed 19 BBs in between getting an out, like those times he would walk 4 guys in a row, get pulled, then come back a few days later and do the same thing.
Just an interesting look on how big this trade is to the local minor league baseball were I live.
Could be bad news for the Asheville Tourist and might push the Drive over the top.

Well I’m waiting for the better than the best news this season and that’s Okajima getting DFA’ed or trading some how.
I like Oki, but he is terrible now

eh he'll be non-tendered
with september callups, there’s plenty of space on the roster for the rest of the season. Hey, gotta have someone to put in when we’re down 16-2
Hot damn
Maybe CBM will work out like all the other prospects Theo’s gotten, like…
Seriously, after 8 years, we’ve had 0 prospects work out that we haven’t drafted. When George Kottaras’ 76 OPS+ is your greatest success, you kinda suck.
Building Fenway from the ground up - Virtual Fenway

wait…
theres….
nope, I got nothing. But then it’s not too often that the Sox actually trade for prospects.
eh, not really in the Sox business model
they pretty much never trade away good players for prospects because they can pretty much always keep the good players. Therefore almost anytime they actually trade for a prospect, it’s trading someone pretty much useless (MDC, Ramon Ramirez) for a prospect who has some potential but is an incredibly long shot to ever succeed. As long as they keep getting good players through the draft, I don’t really see how it’s a problem. I mean to trade for good prospects, you need to trade good players.
He picks up the slack with his own prospects
You know, the Pedrioas, Ellsburys, Lowries, Buchholzs, Lesters, Bards and Papelbons of the world. It makes his 0-fer on his traded for prospects much, much more acceptable.

I don't really follow the minors too closely, especially other teams' systems
but isn’t 21 years old a little long in the tooth for A ball? I thought it was mostly 18-19 maybe 20 yr olds
I exercise strong self control. I never drink anything stronger than gin before breakfast
No, not really. Its age appropriate
There are 2 19 year olds and 4 20 year olds on his team. Everyone else is his age or (in the case of most of the guys) older.
The average age of a pitcher in the Sally League is 21.8.

No, it's fine.
He’s a year out of JuCo.
Clay was also 21 when he was pitching in the SAL (except for those 3 starts in high-A Wilmington).
Like alskor said, 18/19 year-olds are rare in low-A ball, as the teenagers you’ll see are the most talented kids out of high school.
