2011 Roster/Lineup Formation
I figured with how depressing this season can be at times it would be a fun exercise to put together how you think the lineup/roster should be for next year. One guideline don't put in ridiculous acquisitions (We are not getting Adrian Gonzalez). If people like this maybe we could do the bench and pitching after.
DH David Ortiz
RF JD Drew
LF Daniel Nava
CF Ryan Kalish (That's right no Ellsbury)

I’m finally joining the Team Lowrie Should Start, I expect a t-shirt and a button in the mail shortly. Scoot has been a great SS in terms of recent Sox SSs, healthy he has been tremendous for us, however Lowrie is showing us again why we liked him so much in 2008 and will be hard to bench given a good ST. Ellsbury and Cameron are being paid to be starting OFers, and when healthy ARE starting OFers. If they are healthy they WILL be starting again. Because of this, I move Kalish back to Pawtucket where he can get full time at bats. Nava has shown enough to be an offensive bench player and Darnell is an easy choice as a corner defensive replacement and a re-sign. Darnell can play center but it isn’t pretty so if Ellsbury and Cameron go down Kalish (obviously) will get first call.
I also re-sign all three major FAs. Two based on performance and who is available and the third based purely on the non-statistical basis of heart. Beltre is the cream of the crop at 3B this year, and VMart at catcher. Both have been here, both can play here and I know that at least in VMart’s case, he would like to stay here. Maybe VMart isn’t a catcher long term, but knows really. There isn’t an empirical scale of when a catcher becomes a 1B, maybe he can catch until 35, who knows but at this point, given the lack of alternatives at a premium position and no clear contended in the minors, we take the risk and re-sign him. And for Beltre we just have to pony up the cash. Ortiz I want to re-sign so bad. We all love him and I think it will be too hard for Theo to say goodbye to the player that essentially created the legend of Theo Epstein, Genius GM.
In other words, largely the team remains the same.

I think they mix and match Lowrie and Scutaro. Doubt it's a full time thing for either.
They’re both good players.

Overall, that seems pretty good.
I agree that Lowrie will start the year as the starting SS, but he will lose the job to Scutaro. He was one of our few dependable players this year, so I see no reason to jump off the wagon. Plus, even if we were playing Lowrie just for the future, that makes no sense either, as Iglesias (barring injury) will certainly be up by 2012.
Moving on to the Pen. Wake is in his forties with declining numbers this year. He was horrible in the pen this year and was only good for emergency starts, which weren’t productive either. I also have a feeling he will hang it up after this year. Also, Bowden has shown no progress and no potential the past two years. I don’t think he will do well in the pen. The only thing we can do with him is convert him back to a starter and hope we find lightning in a bottle and/or trade him. I like Doubront in the pen. I’m questionable about MDC. I have always been a fan and think he can bounce back from a bad year. But if he starts the same way he finished this year, that leaves us with only 3 good arms left (Pap, Bard, Doubront). That is a lot of holes to fill trough FA or the farm system. There needs to be a complete overhaul in the pen built around Bard and Doubront. Whether that means trading Papelbon or trading prospects for solid relievers, something major needs to happen
I don’t know, I think it’s Scoots spot to lose. If he loses it, he isn’t taking it back. Lowrie is the up and coming guy, Iglesias has lost this season pretty much, he still needs to show he can hit and get on base. With the bullpen I put Wake in because he’s under contract and our other long guy, Atch, isn’t. The thing with Bowden is that he’s ALWAYS been a starter, we’ve used him as a reliever and it wasn’t until this year that we actually converted him. I want to see what he can do when he goes into a season with a reliever mindset. It’s different. The approach is different. It’s a big adjustment so he needs one more shot. As with MDC, he’s the best of the worst we have so I kept him.

no prospect is a certanity of anything
especially since Iglesias missed a huge chunk of this year. In his case, we know the glove is great, we know that he’s hit for decent average, but we also know that to be better than Lowrie can be, he really needs to improve his discipline. He hasn’t done anything yet to prove that in the long term, he’s a better choice for the position than Lowrie.
Victor has to go.

What evidence do you have that Salty is ready to be a fulltime catcher?
I mean after being demoted and not doing great in his demotion, he’s only had 8 ABs with the Red Sox. I wouldn’t exactly go all in on him unless we see some proof that he’s actually a productive major leaguer.
And why would you sell incredibly low on Ellsbury and then spend a ton on Crawford? Crawford is basically the same player with a little more power and probably better defense in left, and would cost… what, $15 million a year more than Ells?
Salty?
The problem with catcher is that we’ve got Salty and we know nothing about him at all really. None of our prospects are ready so we have no depth. The best bet is to keep Vmart because anything less is a MASSSIVE step down from what we’ve had.

The Ells hate and the Salt love have to stop.
Ells is a solid major league player, Salt isn’t even a major league player. His minor league track record is questionable too. He’s only had one year where he sustained or had the opportunity to sustain success for the entire year.

He's not going to be worth it given his horrible defense and declining bat.
Yes, I know, he talk Price Yahtzee twice tonight.
If he comes back then he better bat exclusively from the right side.

Well he's been worth it DESPITE his horrible defense
And his bat has been fine. Every player has down years, he’s been pretty consistently good.

Daniel Nava will not be starting LF for any team next year.
He’s hit well in the minor and so far, but I just can’t see that happening.

After next year
With the way Lowrie’s played we’re sort of assuming he’s turning Scoot into the utility infielder for next season.

The only thing Scutaro does that Lowrie doesn't
is bat leadoff. If Lowrie ever starts doing that, consider the writing on the wall.
Fenway: "An alternate and better universe, disguised as a ballpark." --Thomas Boswell
I don't really see a numerical reason why he couldn't
he sees a ton of pitches and has a great eye and a phenomenal OBP so far this year. Not gonna steal a lot of bases but will end up in scoring position as often as anyone else with his doubles.
I think there are two main issues
(1) Some people psyche themselves out of being leadoff hitters. They say they can’t do it, they believe they can’t do it, and behold, they can’t do it. He hasn’t been asked to do it for the Red Sox—Tito’s made an explicit point of mentioning in the past that they thought it wasn’t fair to ask him to leadoff.
(2) The only other issue I can see is that they might think that with his doubles tendencies, it’s better to bat him second, to try to bring in a leadoff guy.
Fenway: "An alternate and better universe, disguised as a ballpark." --Thomas Boswell
yeah I hadn't seen that Tito had said he didn't think Lowrie should be leading off
he knows the player’s psyches better than any of us.
I think Pedroia’s got a pretty solid hold on the batting second job.
