Minor Lines 8/24/10: Strong Or Streaky
Pawtucket W 7-3
Josh Reddick: 5-5, HR, POCS
-At this point I'm wondering whether Reddick is a legitimate "streaky hitter", or if that last quiet spell was really just a matter of a bump in the otherwise incredible road of late. Either way, there's no denying Reddick has taken some huge steps since his atrocious May.
Jeremy Hermida: 0-3
Aaron Bates: 2-4, 2B, 2 K
Lars Anderson: 2-4, K
Mark Wagner: 1-4, K
Dustin Richardson: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
Not a strong night for Rizzo after the jump.
Portland L 3-6
Jose Iglesias: 0-5, 3 K
Nate Spears: 1-4, 2B, K
Anthony Rizzo: 0-4, 2 K
Luis Exposito: 2-4, 2 2B
Ryan Lavarnway: 1-3, HR
-Lavarnway seems to be back after falling off hard the last few weeks.
Kyle Weiland: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 2 HR
Salem L 2-3
Ryan Dent: 0-4, K
Oscar Tejeda: 0-4, K
-While Tejeda is still having a decent year, it's clear his ridiculous numbers early on were largely BABIP feuled.
Will Middlebrooks: 0-4, 2 K
Adalberto Ibarra: 1-3, BB, 2 K
Tim Federowicz: 1-4, 2B, K
Alex Hassan: 1-3, BB, K
Pete Hissey: 0-4, 2 K
Caleb Clay: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HR
Greenville W 4-2
Jeremy Hazelbaker: 1-3, K, POCS
Derrik Gibson: 0-4, SB
Michael Almanzar: 0-4
Shannon Wilkerson: 2-4, SB
Ken Roque: 0-3, 2 K
GCL Red Sox W 3-1 (In 7)
Sean Coyle: 0-2, BB, K
Keury De La Cruz: 0-3, K
Jose Vinicio: 0-3
Henry Ramos: 1-3, 2B
Oscar Perez: 0-2

Wow
Reddick is absolutely destroying right now.
Really sucks that he has a trend of hibernating his bat once he gets called up.
I really, really like what I’m seeing though. Ben do you think he gets a September call up? It’s not like we REALLY need another OF right now with Drew, Kalish, Nava, DMac, Hall, although I wouldn’t mind him playing left instead of Nava. He’s an upgrade in my opinion.
He is an enigma
The “bump in the road” as Ben called wasn’t even that, I mean, if you looked at the lines they were 0-4 nights but he really cut the K rate down, he was still getting the bat on the ball like he is now. I think someone said he’s a lot like Vlad, a real contact hitter and will probably be one of those high BABIP players. I think he’s got his swing down now. He probably will get the call up, we’ll see if he can take his swing with him.

problem is
despite not striking out an incredible amount, he just hasn’t been able to get the consistently high BABIP that always made Vlad a good hitter despite not walking- he’s been able to consistently hit around or above .300 his whole career, and with a lot of power. Unless Reddick can get a consistently very high BABIP against greater than AA pitching or learn some discipline, he’s closer to a bust than an MLB player. But we’ll see if his streaking continues… maybe he HAS figured it out at AAA
Looking at his splits
It confirms what I’ve thought. Since July he’s figured it out. (Without SF info) his BABIP from all the games in July and August stands at .351.

He's been hitting the ball really hard to all fields lately and it didn't show in the boxscore
From 18/19 game recap:
* Josh Reddick lines out to right fielder John Mayberry.
From 8/20 game recap:
* Josh Reddick lines out to left fielder Chris Aguila.
From 8/22 game recap:
Josh Reddick lines out sharply to left fielder Lucas Duda
The guy can flat out hit, the problem is: Can he get himself in a hitter count? He’s OPSing .976 in 103 ABs when he’s ahead in the count and .542 in 141 ABs when he’s behind in the count.
I hope he continues to rack, we may need that for trade purpose at least.
Going
to see Portland for the last time tomorrow.

Are you going to do any of those scouting report things?
If Lavarnway is catching, could you do one on his defense?
