Johnny Damon Not Going To Red Sox

For all of you that wanted Johnny Damon back, I'm sorry because it's not happening, according to Tigers beat reporter Jason Beck:

# Damon: "I'm not going." #Tigers

Damon: "I like to believe that we can still get back into this thing. Our schedule looks OK. We can definitely make a run." #Tigers

Damon: "My gut and everything else tells me Detroit's the place for me." #Tigers

For all of you that didn't want him, congratulations! Crack open a beer and let's see what the Red Sox can do from here on out.

Good! Didn't need him.

I’d rather see the young guys get more experience and develop.

I want to see Kalish continue to play, and once the AAA season ends: Reddick,

but that’s just me.

Oh thank you!

Made no sense to me.

Also, is Dusty Brown for Kevin Cash an upgrade?

Yeah, I'm just sick of playing musical chairs with crappy players

Just DFA one to free up a damn roster spot for someone who doesn’t blow chunks like Cash who is maybe the worst player we’ve had this decade.

agreed

i really hate the fact that theo gave up angel sanchez to get cash back. he might not have been a top prospect, but he had potential and given a few more years we more than likely could’ve gotten a lot more for him than a crappy catcher.

Yeah

I know they needed a catcher, but why not get Saltalamacchia back then?

thank God

why give up anything for him, I won’t go as far as saying he is a has-been but he is defiantly on the other side of the career hill. i appreciate what he did for us when he was in Boston, but what this team needs is health, and wins, not a dh who can’t play in the field.

by leftcoastsoxfan on Aug 24, 2010 4:55 PM EDT reply actions

Good

He wouldn’t help on offense, he wouldn’t help on defense, he wouldn’t help in the locker room, and he’d keep some of our young guys from getting playing time, which would in turn make it harder to evaluate them for next year.

by RSNexile on Aug 24, 2010 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

So you as well have given up on the season?

Why would you rather see young non-mlb players get playing time then the Sox give up nothing for a guy we can plug into an OF slot immediately.

Sometimes its seems that a few people would rather talk about prospects then the actual team playing in the majors.

Damon is better than Nava/Mcdonald/Patterson/Kalish/Reddick and would cost almost nothing in prospects so why not grab him?

As mmmm said earlier, this move was a block and the right move to make.

by SoxAcumen on Aug 24, 2010 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Well for one I’d take Nava’s bat over Damon’s any day of the week, he probably plays better defense too. Hell, they’re OPS’ing about the same with nearly identical wOBA’s, that being the case I’d definitely take McDonald over him too, given how McDonald actually has positive value for defense in the OF corners, just not CF.

Well Patterson blows almost as hard as Cash so you’ve got one there.

Kalish is struggling but had little to prove in AAA, let the kid get some ML at bats. Because YES I have given up on the season. The whole “are we in it are we out of it” debate began about when Youk when on the DL, back then we had about 55 games left and were 5 back of the WC. In the 20 games since then we’ve gone BACKWARDS in the standings and now have nearly 40% less time to make up that difference. You aren’t shaming anyone into admitting SA, I proudly proclaim this season is going no where, what the hell is the point? Let Kalish hit. Reddick should stay at AAA.

The truth is Damon provided very little for this team. He has limited OF value given that he’s only started 35 games in the OF this year, he just doesn’t have it anymore. Putting him in the OF would take at bats away from valuable players, stunting the growth of others. We can’t DH him, Papi’s got that locked down. He could play 1B, that is about it, his only shot at seeing the field. Maybe you’re caught up in the myth of Johnny Damon but he isn’t the player he once was.

We aren’t playing for anything anymore, the whole thing is confounding, given that he isn’t a big upgrade for any team we might be blocking him from going to and that those other teams are far enough ahead of us that it shouldn’t matter anyway.

Why is it that recognizing there's less than a 1/5 chance of making the playoffs is considered jumping off the bandwagon?

It’s not a question of “giving up.” I hope the Sox will be able to pull off a miracle, but they’re probably going to have to win another 25 games to have any chance to make the playoffs, and that’s not very likely to happen. Rather than stick our heads in the sand and pretend we have a good chance, we might as well get a jump on figuring out what we have for next year, so let’s try this again, shall we?

Damon doesn’t help us on offense. He’s a decent enough hitter, but Nava is better, McDonald is just as good, and Kalish and Reddick would almost certainly be better if they got enough opportunities.

He doesn’t help us on defense. McDonald, Kalish, and Reddick are all better.

He doesn’t help us in the locker room.

Having him in the lineup would keep the young guys from playing.

Not having the young guys play makes it harder to evaluate them for next year, when our chances of making the playoffs haven’t already been reduced to less than 20%.

Damon is not better than Nava, McDonald, Kalish, or Reddick.

Damon is better than Patterson. So is your average corpse.

Damon does not have a future with the Sox. Nava and Kalish probably do, and McDonald and Reddick might.

In short, Damon doesn’t help us make the playoffs this year and doesn’t help us at all for next year. While our chances of making the playoffs this year are slim, the guys we already have give us a better shot at getting there than Damon does, and giving them the chance to play now helps us evaluate them for the purposes of figuring out next year’s roster. In reality, the only good thing about this move is that if the Yankees were interested in claiming him, this is the kind of “dick move,” as someone else put it, that pays them back in kind for the crap they pulled off with Chris Carter last year when they really had no interest in him.

Kinda saw this coming

Obviously it was just a move to block the MFY or Rays getting to him. Which im perfectly OK with.

by arodlikes men on Aug 24, 2010 5:13 PM EDT reply actions

The motive still isn't obvious to me.

The Rays didn’t place a claim on him, no word on the Yankees, but even if he went there he’s only a marginal upgrade over their DH platoon. And he wouldn’t serve much purpose here. This whole thing is baffling.

Would the Sox have done so ASSUMING The Rays had put an offer in on him?

I mean, how transparent are these activities?

SOMEONE found out the Sox put a claim on him, I can’t find it now but SOMEONE said the Rays never did. One way or another these things are revealed to the public, there’s probably more that the public never finds out about.

These of course are assumptions. But if I had heard the Rays never claimed, surely the Sox did too.

Yes, but if you think back originally

It was known that someone put a claim on Damon, but no one knew who it was. It turns out it was the Red Sox. That leads me to believe that a lot of times these claims go in but aren’t announced.

Baseball is a machiavellian business..

I understand that Damon had no qualms signing for the Yankees, and he got the contract he wanted, when he just peaked or near the top of the game as one of the best leadoff hitters in the AL.

His former Sox teammates seemed to always like him, and understand his decision, but I also have no problem for Sox fans to have a huge animosity toward Damon, because he went over to the rival. If Damon went to any other team, I don’t think the animosity would be so strong, much like Petey going to the Mets in 2005, and who seemed to left on really bad terms with the Sox Management, compare to Damon.

I think both the Sox and Damon made the right decisions after the 2005 season. It is too bad that Coco Crip broke his finger a month or two after joining the Sox, because his hitting has never been the same ever since. Damon won another WS, but it is obvious that he was in decline after 2005 in his fielding.

The situation would have been extremely awkward if Damon went back

Things weren’t exactly handled perfectly before his departure, he goes to New York for 4 years, goes back to Boston? Would have been a bit strange to say the least.
