Minor Lines 8/19/10: Portland Likes The Longball
Pawtucket L 2-5
Josh Reddick: 1-4, K
Aaron Bates: 0-4, K
Lars Anderson: 0-4, K
Yamaico Navarro: 1-4, SB
Jeremy Hermida: 1-3, BB, K
Rizzo very much leads the charge after the jump.
Portland W 9-8
Che-Hsuan Lin: 1-5, K, A
Jose Iglesias: 0-4, K
Anthony Rizzo: 3-4, 2 HR, K
-That's 23 home runs on the year for Rizzo, including 18 in Portland, 7 in August, and 5 in the last 10 games--a stretch where he is batting .378/.467/.811 with a 7:10 BB:K. You know how the Sox tend to lack those prospects putting up ridiculous numbers because they push them promotion-wise and age-wise? Well, Rizzo turned 21 less than two weeks ago and missed a year to Lymphoma. And he's one of the best defensive first basemen in the minors.
Luis Exposito: 1-3, HR, BB
Nate Spears: 1-3, HR, BB
Ryan Lavarnway: 2-4, HR
Weiland: 4 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 2 HR, PO
Greenville L 2-5
Derrik Gibson: 0-3, BB, K
Jeremy Hazelbaker: 1-4, K
Michael Almanzar: 2-4, E
Reymond Fuentes: 0-4, K
Ken Roque: 1-3, BB, K
Lowell L 9-10 (In 11)
Kolbrin Vitek: 2-3, 2B, BB, 2 SB
-No shortage of success for Kolbrin Vitek lately, who has dominated the NYPL this past month.
Bryce Brentz: 0-5, K
Miles Head: 1-4
Brandon Jacobs: 1-5, 2 K, E
Keith Couch: 1 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR
-Just continuing the year of the people-facing-our-pitchers.
GCL Red Sox W 9-6
Keury De La Cruz: 3-6, SB
Henry Ramos: 2-3, 2 BB, K, POCS, E

If anyone cares, soxprospects released the new rankings and reports.

Saw that
Can’t say I’ve ever agreed to their policy of ranking prospects before they’ve ever played a game of professional ball. I mean, it’s not like they’re official or anything, but a little premature.
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
He's definitely top 10 in the system.
I know he hasn’t thrown an inning yet, but he has an immensely high ceiling.
If he returns to ’09 form, then he finishes next year in AAA/Boston.
We are talking about a huge talent.
I want him to scrap his changeup for a splitter, though.
And maybe add a cutter.

I must admit that I whiffed big time on Expo
I predicted him as the Bust of the year (Very high K rate and BABIP) but he turned him self into a hitter with an advanced approach: His BB% stands now at a very nice 11% and he has cut his strikeouts by almost a half: I guess we"ll start seeing more dingers and XBH now that he looks like he’s becoming a more selective hitter, a promotion to AAA is not out of question
July: .288/.364/.452 with a 12/20 BB/K
August: 286/.426/.510 with a 11/6 BB/K (zomg!!)
He, Navarro, Rizzo and Lin have been very good development wise in AA this year
I saw Lin's OBP earlier today and drooled.
He doesn’t have a ton of slug in him but man, if the guy plays great defense and is that patient, there’s got to be a place for him somewhere in the future right?

If he does those two things, he'd already be better than Ellsbaby.

Sweet
BBS has Bates, I think Lin is my current favorite prospect.
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
I usually don’t, and there isn’t any one reason why I like Lin more than the others, I just usually find myself curious as to what his line looks like each day more than (most of) the others.

Imagine if Lin develops power.

Yeah, Lin has had an awesome year.
I like watching him play defense. He looks extremely poised and graceful out there in the field – like a lighter, faster JD Drew.
Offensively, I wish he had Drew’s power, but I’ll take the OBP any day of the week.
Yeah, I didn't expect Expo to exaclty jump out the gates because of what you said.
But that’s still “promotion” numbers. He just took time to figure it out like anyone else.
Him this year is basically him for his career. And 23 at Double-A is pretty standard for a catcher.

A to tha Rizzo
How I love you so!
I think Yamaico is being called up.

BTW, the bowscore can be misleading sometimes
In his 2nd AB, Navarro took 3 pitches (1 ball and 2 called strikes) then
Yamaico Navarro crushes a ball to center, but CF Rich Thompson races back and makes a leaping grab against the wall. Tremendous play.
Pawtucket tweet
Sadly, the Red Sox had several of those (deep wall balls) yesterday.
They found their way into Tory Hunter’s glove.
Rizzo has seriously missed out on a pair of these that I can remember this year.
So even what we’ve seen isn’t necessarily lucky.

This is impressive.
Rizzo’s OPS after today is .840 in the EL.
Here is a list of the other players from the last 20 years to have an OPS of .840 or over in the EL at age 20 (200 AB’s):
1. Nick Johnson (1.042)
2. Vladimir Guerrero (1.041)
3. Cliff Floyd (1.012)
4. Ryan Zimmerman (.899)
5. Joe Mauer (.848)
6. Edgar Clemente (.844)
7. Grady Sizemore (.843)

86% Success rate
If he turns out like Clemente I’m gonna be pissed.
