Mike Cameron Returns To The Disabled List, Daniel Nava Returns To Boston
Many of us wanted Daniel Nava back in Boston, but probably not this way. Mike Cameron will return to the disabled list as he continues to struggle with the abdominal injury he sustained early this year, allowing Daniel Nava to make his way back up from Pawtucket.
With Cameron out, this might mean some extended time in center field for recent call-up Ryan Kalish, who spent a majority of his time in Pawtucket.
Cameron was in the middle of a fantastic July before entering a slump in the last week or so, batting only .083/.154/.083 in three games, perhaps prompting the disabled list move. With Kalish up and Jacoby Ellsbury very close to returning (he is scheduled to be reevaluated on Wednesday), it's entirely possible that the Red Sox will elect to shelve him for the rest of the year in hopes of a strong comeback in 2011.

Kalish-Ellsbury-Drew
With Nava, Darnell and Hall as backups?
I can deal with that.

Or Nava-Kalish-Drew
With Ellsbury and Darnell as backups, and Hall to be seen only in case of emergencies? That’s O with me, too.

I expect to see more of a Lowrie-like treatment until he's absolutely ready.
If they think he can’t play everyday, they won’t play him everyday.

They've taken it slow with Ells after the re-injury
And there’s much less of a “wasting” factor to deal with, so he’ll be back with only a few games off, I expect.

Au contraire - I will ask plenty of questions
not that my questions matter at all to Francona & the Red Sox.
But really, I concur with lone1c that Nava-Kalish-Drew sounds like a better outfield.
Three guys who all practice plate discipline. All have a little power. Kalish & Drew are above average defenders.
I would still prefer a healthy Cameron, but the man’s gotta get healthy.
Unfortunately, as I said - my opinions probably don't matter
and it will probably be Ellsbury out there.
Unfortunately they’ll probably put him in CF as well: Kalish-Ellsbury-Drew
and a little baseball angel somewhere will die everytime Ellsbury misreads a fly to center …
Is Kalish an above-average defender in center?
Everything I’ve heard is that he’s an above average corner, but maybe a fringe-average defender in center.
Well, from what little I've seen (and I admittedly haven't been able to see a ton)
Kalish has the wheels and instincts to field CF well. His arm is not super strong, like Drew’s – but actually a strong arm is more important in RF.
I don’t think he would rate anywhere near as high in CF as Ryan Westmoreland did (Gawd I wish him the best in his recovery!) but he should still be above average.
Nava-Kalish-Drew
is better than Kalish-Patterson-Drew
I want Nava in.

It's a possibility.
Depends on if Nava can get up to Fenway in time for the game.

This makes Theo
look really foolish for not dealing for any sort of outfielder before the deadline. wonder if he’ll find some major league help during august; you don’t exactly want to depend on Nava, Kalish, Mcdonald, and Hall if you’re going to make a playoff run. Don’t get me wrong, Nava and Kalish are good (and Darnell’s ok), but they need someone with real experience.

If I was the GM, I would have traded RamRam and Okajima for Cliff Lee and Patterson for Pujols
Unfortunately, real life doesn’t actually work like a video game.
The market was ridiculous.
Way overpriced—there was no way it would be worth dealing future full-time personnel for role players for a playoff run. Better to live and die with the talent on-hand, and hope for better luck with the waiver market, than to mortgage the future for this one season.

agreed plus given the waiver wire pecking order
Theo actually was not in as big of a rush as one might think.
Until we catch the Rays & Yanks – they can’t block our waiver moves.
That gives him a little more time to keep assessing needs before making a move – if a move is even needed to be made.
We've got a ton of outfielders
With Ellsbury about to come back we have 1 more.
Kalish – Ellsbury – Drew is a pretty good starting OF. Nava and McDonald provide excellent depth, how many 4th OFers have .380 OBPs? Not many I’m guessing.
OF was really the least of the concerns going into the trade deadline IMO. Enough players were called up and proved themselves that we don’t need to worry about it too much.

As a question, though
Was it out of necessity, or did they think he could hack it already? He was only in AAA for a few months.
Fenway: "An alternate and better universe, disguised as a ballpark." --Thomas Boswell
And he put up decent numbers
He could use a little more time in Pawtucket — I’d like to see him up here full time in 2012, or at the end of next year at the soonest — but he was going to get a September call-up no matter what. This way, he’s just here a month sooner than planned.
a lil off topic.......
But am I the only one who thinks that Adam Dunns powerful ass left handed bat would be a perfect fit to replace papi as our DH….I mean u could definitely pencil him in for 30. Plus homers a year…..
Well the Nationals don’t want to give him up yet atm. Actually, I don’t know why they are getting rid of their bigger players. I know they aren’t doing well standings wise but they have pretty damn good pitching/bullpen.
They're not contending this year
They probably should’ve dealt Dunn to an AL team if he was willing to DH for half a year.
USG
Open questions
One: Would he be worth the cost? Two: Would his NL power translate to the AL with the tougher pitching? Three: Would he fit into Boston and be willing to be just a DH?
And most importantly: is there any consideration of extending Papi for a year or two while some of our future 1B/DH talent matures, making a long-term investment in Dunn unnecessary?
Fenway: "An alternate and better universe, disguised as a ballpark." --Thomas Boswell
My guess, then, is that they take it.
Give Lars and/or Rizzo some more time to mature and get ready for 2012/2013.
Fenway: "An alternate and better universe, disguised as a ballpark." --Thomas Boswell
I don't think even Ortiz considers the club likely to pick up that option
Should be easy enough to resign him for less money though.
I would go:
1) Hell no. (Not as a mark against Dunn, but the Nats were trying to take a ride to the bank on this one, word has it. For those wondering why we didn’t acquire Dunn, I have a counter-question: Do you like Casey Kelly?)
2) Maybe.
3) Apparently not at all, on the DH matter.
Papi will get some consideration, but not just for one year, since Ortiz has made it clear he really doesn’t want that, and the team would rather spread some cost out over 2 years…if they think Ortiz is worth it at all, that is.
Here’s hoping Cameron’s headed for surgery soon; it’s been a hard luck year for him, and I still think we’ll get a solid healthy ,2011 out of him.
Depending upon what Beltre does, this isn't a huge problem.

+1
I still wish it was Patterson that was leaving instead of Cam going on the DL.
Nava deserves to be up.
I don't mind Cameron on the DL
enough of his wasted at-bats.
Glad to have Nava, I missed him

Cameron vs Patterson
Come-on, now. Cameron’s offense was light-year’s ahead of Pattersons. And so was his defense, even with the injury.
Prior to slumping this last week, Cameron had pulled his average up significantly. As of July 23 he was at .281 with an OBP of .350 and 3 HR in 10 games. Unfortunately there was that game where he had to keep diving back to first and I think that really aggravated his abdominal strain and he’s obviously regressed since then.
Patterson has not been able to get his BA above .220 since June 8 and his OBP is a horrid .273. Inexcusable. Talk about wasted at-bats.
Hm.

I'm sure he's probably gone once Ellsbury is back up
since his 2B ability is pretty unnecessary with Lowrie up
