Adalberto Ibarra Ends Up Signing With Sox -- For Much Less Than Expected
As we've seen from him going to Salem, at last Adalberto Ibarra is signed by the Sox, but not the deal that had been agreed upon earlier.
Earlier it was reported that he was signing for a 5 year major league deal for between 3 and 4.3 million dollars, however, per Alex Speier of WEEI, Ibarra apparently failed his physical due to a minor issue and the Sox were no longer comfortable giving him a major league deal. Now he's in on a minor league deal with a bonus between $700,000 and $800,000. So might not be time to start stitching those Boston Ibarra jerseys just yet.

+1
The back of my Catcher of the Future jersey is getting pretty torn up. There’s some rule about kidnapping Joe Mauer’s family and forcing him to play for us, right?
Wait 'til next/this year?

Yeah, I don't think coercion works too well here.

Well if it's a minor problem
AND it saved us a 40-man roster spot AND it saved us 2-3 mil, sounds fine to me.

haha is that what my title was originally?
I claim no responsibility… came in to work, saw that, and posted it quickly. Was not yet under the influence of coffee.
I might have preferred the increased money
For increased confidence in a more definite “Catcher of the Future,” y’know?

What is the minor problem...
If it’s minor then why did it cost him millions…

well it was the difference between a minor league and major league deal
they are no longer completely confident that he will make the majors- the 3 million was over 5 years.
It's not exactly millions.
It’s the difference between the 5 years, and the number of years he spent in the minors, x 400,000 or so.
If he never makes the majors, or stays for less than four years, then it’s a big difference. Otherwise, not so much.

In a 7-tater game
But still, very ridiculous. Slugging approaching .700 since the break.

1B of tha future fa sho
To do this well and show this level of power in a man’s 1st taste of the upper minors at 20/21 missing nearly a full season due to cancer is extremely, extremely impressive.
This isn’t like Lars, either (circa 2008).
Sufficient sample size, less contact issues, and he isn’t a headcase.
I got flack over at SoSH for saying that Lars doesn’t have it between the ears but this has been well documented.
From Lars, himself, no less.
