Laser Show Returns: Dustin Pedroia Activated
We all know the impact Pedroia has on this team, and it's been clear how much it hurt to lose him (that Wild Card seems so far away now). Hopefully he can pick up where he left off, and try and get us back in this thing.

Lasers!
I’m pumped. It’s only been longer than expected by him, wasn’t it? I feel like we’re easily within reach of where the doctors originally said it would be.
Like I said
We’re gonna need the Death Star lasers from Pedey down the stretch.

That’s the reaction we’re gonna need.

Oh punctuation.
This was what I meant. I wish it was Patterson that got the boot but with Ellsbury out we need more of those “versatile” guys.

sigh, Kalish and McDonald can both play center better than Patterson
I just want Nava to come back. Go away Patterson. Or alternatively, Reddick can play center probably better than those guys and has been good lately.
EP phone home.

And he’s 7 feet tall, kills men by the hundreds, if he had played this weekend he would have consumed the Rangers with fire balls from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his arse.

I’m in a movie referencing mood today.
He does provide a spark, he’s never the best hitter but just his presence lifts the performance of those around him, lots of intangibles with Pedey, we have missed him quite a bit.

Yea he was really a spark in the lineup.
Seems like the team is lacking intensity without Pedey and Youk.
Does anyone know why Nava isnt being called up? I would like to see more of him.

Funny story
Nava was just recalled. Maybe THIS will spell the end of Patterson.

Christ just the difference in defense is significant.
His UZR versus his replacements:
Innings UZR UZR/150
Dustin 649 6.3 12.1
Others 422 -2.5 -7.4
Even with a slow restart at the plate, having DP back in the field is going to be a huge boost!
Plus it frees Lowrie to mainly spell Scutaro, who needs more rest based on his recent trends.
your point of Pedroia is a better defender stands up
but you’re using silly small numbers to defend it, just say the point. For example, two days ago, Hall’s UZR at second was .8, now it is -1.9.
No, stats can tell us different things.
As a measure of ‘how good is this defender’ or ‘this is the defense that we will see in the future’ – yes those numbers are silly small stats.
But as a measure of ‘this is what happened’ – they are perfectly valid. They tell us very clearly what happened in the innings with Pedroia at 2B and in the innings without him there.
Well, at least the UZR part is. I agree that the UZR/150 projections should only be taken as a normalization of the two periods of measurement – and not as predictions of what either source will project out forward.
There is no such thing as too small a sample size for measuring what happened. A measurement is a measurement (especially discrete, quantized measurements). You just don’t want to use such for making projections.
well yeah there is when there is a margin of error like that stat has
it doesn’t accurately measure every play effectively, only over time.
PATTERSON TO THE DL! PATTERSON TO THE DL!

For the first time in nearly two months, Dustin Pedroia will rejoin the active roster of the Red Sox.
It’s been a longer-than-expected recovery for Pedroia, who went on the disabled list after fracturing his foot with a foul ball in the June 25 game against the Giants.
Pedroia has played only two games in Pawtucket since being cleared by doctors to start his rehab assignment, but has declared it to be "good enough." He had one hit in six at bats.
