Minor Lines 8/15/10: Deadline Day
The Sox have till the end of the day to sign draft picks. And now they've gone and (unexpectedly) nabbed LSU outfielder Lucas LeBlanc. What does that mean for, say, Brandon Workman? Time will tell.
Pawtucket W 3-1
Josh Reddick: 0-3, BB
Daniel Nava: 0-3
Dustin Pedroia: 0-3
Carlos Delgado: 0-3
Lars Anderson: 0-2, 2 K
Yamaico Navarro: 0-3, E
-Wait, and this team won?
Rich Hill: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 1 HR
Tony does good after the jump.
Portland L 4-5
Che-Hsuan Lin: 3-5, SB
Nate Spears: 1-5, HR
Anthony Rizzo: 1-3, 2B, BB, K
Ryan Lavarnway: 0-3, BB

Derrik Gibson: 1-6
Michael Almanzar: 3-5, BB
Reymond Fuentes: 2-4, 2B, BB
Shannon Wilkerson: 0-3, K
Jeremy Hazelbaker: 0-2, K
I'm really not sure what happened re: the pitching. At various times, this Box Score tells me that Rivera went three scoreless, then changed to Britton went three scoreless before Rivera gave up a ton of ground ball hits and a homer for six runs, and now...
Manny Rivera: 4.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR
-So take it as you will.

Workman
Some people seem cautiously optimistic that we sign him. Really he would be a fool not to sign, he loses all leverage next year, an injury would end any shot at a good bonus and that draft is said to be a lot deeper. If he goes back to school he leaves a lot of money on the table.
Ranuado, I really hope they get him, they say that will be a little easier to do than Workman.
We really need to sign as many of these guys as possible, if the new CBA after the next draft does include a hard slotting system than we lose any monetary advantage we had.

At this point I'm not sure if they're gonna move him before the end of the season.
Not that much time left, and it might not warrant a big move to the north before the fall leagues start up. They’re seeing him play in the GCL, albeit not against reasonable competition (though he hasn’t really played in a while either), and it would help for them to get their catching situaion squared away before they move him around too much.

Yeah, he's 23 (I think), so I want to see him get going.
Where could you see him starting next year?

28th overall Zach Lee is expected to get a $2M offer from the Dodgers, which may...
… set the stage for fellow LSU Tiger’s Anthony Renaudo’s 39th position numbers. Renaudo has been working out at LSU, but has made no comments regarding demands/offers. That would seem to indicate his willingness to sign for the right $. Boras is allegedly seeking a $3M bonus for Renaudo. $2M or thereabouts seems about right though as his position would have been top 10 (or maybe 5) if he was as healthy this season as he obviously is now.
Zach Lee has been working out with the LSU football team (as the anticipated backup QB this year) and will be a two-sport athlete if he stays. I’d say he’s 50-50 as he’s crazy about his new college life.
Garin Cecchini is another LSU recruit who is almost certainly expected to sign with the Sox. He was in Boston last week for a physical. He’s allegedly asking for a $1.75M bonus, but he won’t get that as a 4th round pick coming off a bad injury.
Poor LSU
They’ve been pillaged from this last draft with lots of high bonus sorts of players.
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
They are a perennial top program so they get a lot of top recruits, but they lose a bunch, too.
If they kept pitchers Renaudo and Lee, and IFs Cecchini and JaCoby Jones (19th round pick with the Astros expected to stay at school), they’d probably be the pre-season #1 team in the nation.
OF Lucas LeBlanc has already signed with the Red Sox.
Right now the feeling around this area is:
Lee – 50/50
Renaudo – 75/25 signs
Cecchini – 90/10 signs
Jones – 90/10 stays
LSU would be happy to keep Lee and Jones and let the Red Sox take the other two. They especially want to keep one of the pitchers, at least.
Jones was stupidly underrated going into the draft.
Hellarotic tools.

More possible (not Renaudo-related) bad news for LSU
QB Zach Lee (Dodgers #1 pick) attended the morning LSU football practice, but did NOT attend the afternoon practice. Uh oh.
For crying out loud, at least let LSU keep him.
LSU football coach Les Miles has called a press conference for this evening to address the Zach Lee "situation".
It sounds like his backup QB just signed with the Dodgers.
If the Cubs continue to do nothing with Brian Lahair
I would really, really hope the Red Sox take a look at bringing him into their system.
Lahair is a Worcester native (his brother plays for the Tornadoes) and was in the Seattle system through last year. He’s been rotting in the Cub’s farm (AAA Iowa of the Pacific Coast League) this year despite putting up monster offensive numbers:
PA 381
BA .303
OBP .373
SLG .550
OPS .923
2B 27
3B 2
HR 19
He plays 1B, DH & the outfield – though not so much the latter recently. He’s big (6’ 5" , 220 lbs) and looks like he’s finally found his power stroke to go with his size.
Don’t be put off by LaHair’s modest showing in the majors last year. In his first season, he got 150 PAs and only hit 3 HRs, .250/.315/.346, but that is pretty SSS and can largely be attributed to the combination of being a rookie and, of course, having to hit in Safeco.
He’s a free agent after this summer and I can’t help but notice that we don’t have a real slugging power option in development in our minors, unless you count Lars. Lars is much younger (only 22) but looks a lot farther away from being ready for the majors.
It would be cool if the Red Sox brought this particular native son home.
A 27-year-old dominating Triple-A isn't really news.
Just sayin’.

big difference is that Nava was very consistent across all levels of the minors and rocketed through quite quickly
whereas LaHair is on his 4th year in AAA and has dramatically improved each year. Which isn’t to say there isn’t some possibility of a decent player there, probably not a big league starter though. (of course as a disclaimer, I know literally nothing about the guy except what baseball-reference just told me)
I know him from following him as a local player (Yeah, I'm near Wusta)
and from being a Seattle fan as well, it has been a natural to follow his career.
I’d place him in a slightly different category from Nava since Nava is a pure hitter and could make a career out of just getting on base, period.
LaHair used to be more slight of build and his body has morphed since his high-school and early minor-league days. Now he is clearly more of a power-hitter stereotype and has had to mature physically and seems to have developed a power stroke to match.
I’m not sayin’ he’s the next big thing. But he has a power stroke, is a FA, and we have a shortage of power in the minors.
I’d also point out that arriving late from the minors is not necessarily a strike against a player’s potential. Edgar Martinez never got a real sustained chance in the majors until he was age 27. Not that I expect LaHair to be the next Edgar … though it is interesting to note that Edgar’s pre-breakout season numbers (198 PAs in the majors at age 26) were pretty much as crappy as LaHair’s numbers last year.
Dont we have enough of those types?

I mean older AAAA players
who play 1B and OF. Feels like we have a million of those, no matter how much they hit,

well next year
Shealy’s gone already. Delgado will be gone. But yeah, I don’t imagine Lars jumping past AAA and it seems like they’d probably want to slot Rizzo in there somewhere before the year was up if he keeps going like he has.
and Sean Coyle has apparently signed for $1.3 million
cool, I didn’t really think he’d sign, but that is a whole ton of money.
Can someone help me out with this.....
I really like Coyle but I don’t get why Theo and co. valued him so highly.
Top 25 money doesn’t make too much sense to me.
Why didn’t they just take AJ Cole and hand over $700,000 more.
What about last year when they foolishly passed up on Wil Myers because he was asking for $2 mill.

1/2 because the MLB doesn't like over-slot picks and wants it to look like
“Oh, well, it came down to the wire and we HAD to give in!”
1/2 because it gives agents leverage.
“Sign now or you miss your chance!”

He was asking for 1.75, but he wasn't going to get that.
$1.31M is VERY high for a 4th rounder, but he would have been picked much higher if not for a injury; Sort of a high school Ranaudo situation.
How the hell does Cecchini get the same bonus as Coyle.
I think Theo is really off his rocker and thinks Coyle is the next Pedroia or something.

In case you were wondering about OF Lucas LeBlanc...
Last week he said he was definitely going to LSU because the offer from the Sox wasn’t high enough. Today, that apparently changed as he reportedly got a $500K signing bonus.
As for his stats, prepare to drool. As a sophomore at Delgado Junior College (a very good JuCo program in New Orleans), LeBlanc hit…
.420 with 17 doubles, 7 triples, 11 home runs and 67 RBIs.
