So, to recap
Beckett has an ERA north of 6.5 and was just extended, Scutaro has an 85 OPS+, Lowell has been a corpse for most of this year making $12m, and Lackey is above 4.5 ERA with 4 more years on the deal. Other than the obvious decision to sign Beltre, is anyone defending Theo anymore?
Not even counting the injuries, he F’d up in every other way this offseason.

Lackey was declining
Even before this terrible year. And while I fully expect him to at least be below 4.0 next season, the writing was on the wall. And that’s why it wasn’t sunshine and rainbows when it was announced around here.
Building Fenway from the ground up - Virtual Fenway
Resign beltre and martinez to start
Papi will sign for less and we trade ells and have kalish start. cameron will be back for one more year and most likely be healthy
I exercise strong self control. I never drink anything stronger than gin before breakfast
So we get even older and more expensive?
Haven’t we learned anything? Martinez is not a major league catcher.
Building Fenway from the ground up - Virtual Fenway
He's good enough?
How much has his bat contributed versus how much stolen bases have hurt us? And aside from Beltre they probably wont be long contracts. Its good enough til the farm grows up or another option becomes available
I exercise strong self control. I never drink anything stronger than gin before breakfast
Seriously?
You think Martinez will sign for anything under 3 years? I’d say 4 is the minimum, and I don’t trust his bat as a 1B, nor do I particularly want Youk as a full-time 3b.
Building Fenway from the ground up - Virtual Fenway
If anything his bat would only be better as 1b
Not nearly the wear and tear of a catcher however I do agree that I would rather have Youk at first
I exercise strong self control. I never drink anything stronger than gin before breakfast
It will be better
But it probably won’t be good enough. We’ve grown accustomed to a .900-.950 OPS from 1B, and I don’t trust Martinez, at the age of 34, being an acceptable 1B/DH, especially if we’re paying him catcher-who-can-hit money.
Building Fenway from the ground up - Virtual Fenway

Yes, I am.
Scutaro is hurt and forced to play the whole season so far thanks to Lowrie’s mono and a wealth of other injuries keeping the roster in flux and without a designated backup SS.
Beckett was a below-market value deal. If he has been shitty this season, that doesn’t change the fact that a player of the quality we could expect from him is worth that much after the A.J. Burnett deal.
Lackey a bit more of an overspend, but again, results far worse than the natural decline you could expect.

He has been overrated since he came into the league. He’s getting ace money (not Yankees ace money) and pitches ok to well. He’s had one very good year with us.

Nope, it isn't
But we’ve got tons of problems and a farm system that routinely dumps out excellent pitching prospects. Why not try to get someone who can fill all those empty holes around the diamond rather than performing a known-dumbass move?
Building Fenway from the ground up - Virtual Fenway
What empty holes around the diamond?
What routine excellent pitching prospects? No system does that except maybe Oakland, and they play in the f’ing Colosseum.
The only thing our system can be expected to produce are quality, major league players. We hit gold in Lester and Buchholz, but coming into the season all we knew we had locked up was a #1 and maybe a #3 in Buchholz.
We take our shots with a bunch of guys in the system to maximize our chances of producing a Lester, but that doesn’t mean you can rest on your laurels. Kelly bombs, and all of a sudden you’re left with a rotation of Lester, Buchholz (as a #3 type), Doubront, and two guys you’re paying $10 million for anyways. That’s not going to compete in the AL East.
Free Agency is a necessary evil.

We are in the best division in baseball. You need a minimum of 95 wins to even consider the playoffs. 90 is the same as 85 or 80; home in october.
Building Fenway from the ground up - Virtual Fenway
Because a GM cannot be held accountable for what division they play in.
Because you ignore the reality of the market and available resources.

2009 ERA by month
7.22, 2.38, 1.51, 3.55, 5.03, 4.14. He isn’t consistent in his performances. Sometimes he’s dominant, other times he’s miserable for long stretches, and it’s all over the place.
Now, he’s stuck in incompetent. If you compare that to our real ace Lester, he started off terribly then was ~.5 for the rest of the season.
Building Fenway from the ground up - Virtual Fenway
And yet, over the course of the season, he brings it back down towards 3.35 each time.
Consistency is a buzz word. It’s garbage. If he’s inconsistent and buts up great numbers over a season, that means he was fucking fantastic at parts. But that’s besides the point, because Beckett xFIPs by month in 2009:
4.04, 3.52, 2.63, 3.16, 3.71, 3.17
What changes for Beckett are factors largely beyond the control of the pitcher.
