How many blown saves does paps have?

The boy is losing it.  He has 2-3 good games for every bad one.  That may be good for a starter, but for a closer it is horrific.  His act of pursing his lips and staring down the batter has gotten old because he is not as effective as he once was.  May be time for Bard to step in and think about getting a quality player for third next year while he has some value.  One more year like this and his trade desirability will start tanking if it has already not.

I'm pretty sure he's a free agent after next year.

I would have traded him last winter and signed Soriano, but I can see why they kept him. He wasn’t THAT bad last year.

so thats six with 28 saves 1 out of every 4.5 chances, and what do the top closers average? maybe 1 out of every 10, seems to me this roller coaster is heading in to the station.

Who cares about saves?

Craps can come in with a 3 run lead, give up 2, and still get a “save”, even though it’s a lousy outing. Let’s look at his peripherals to see how he might pitch in the future. These have been observations from THIS year. These stats also do NOT include his latest failure.
fastball: He doesn’t have great command, and has a tendency to get behind in counts and serve up meatballs. This is the only pitch that he can kinda locate consistently for strikes.

splitter: It’s a decent out pitch and is best throw when ahead in the count because he can’t really throw it in the zone. If he does throw it in the zone, he sometimes hangs a flat one for a HR.

slider: don’t really know what to say about this one. IMO, it’s not really effective at all.

K/9- is down from 10.06 to 8.03

BB/9 is up from 3.18 to 3.28

HR/9: This is the big one. Everyone know’s a fastball is coming, so when he misses, it gets hit a long way. It is up from .66 to 1.09

BABIP: He’s at .227 and his career average is .274,which is really scary.

His FIP and xFIP are up and are 4.06 and 4.25 respectively.

It doesn’t matter how many “saves” or blown saves he has so far. He isn’t a dominant reliever at all this year.

I hadn't looked at his numbers recently

But that 4.25 figure is scary. Almost as scary as nights like this, where I have to wonder whether we’ll win even when it breaks our way for the first 26 outs.

DAMMIT!

I had the lmgtfy page up about to do the same thing. Well done.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Then if Jon Pap still sucks during the first 2 months of next season, TRADE HIM for young arms and a better bullpen!

Anybody want MATT CAPPS from the Minnesota Twerps?

“(General Manager X)? Hi, this is Theo. We have a Closer who is going downhill fast, who has one year of team control left and is going to be mighty expensive next season… would you please trade us a cheaper, better reliever for him?”

I’m not sure I understand the theory here… are we supposed to find a team that stopped watching baseball sometime in August? If I’m another GM Paps’ expense alone would scare me off, nevermind his struggles. If he was cheap or even expensive but fairly reasonably priced (say something like 5-6mm) we could definitely find someone. Not too many teams can afford to give up assets to pay a Closer whose periphs are on a downward track $12mm for one season before he walks in free agency.

Thought of an upside to all this, though… remember when we all used to be terrified Paps would end up a Yankee? Now I would be delighted!

I understand Paps wasn't THAT bad last year, but I kinda saw this decline coming.

Would have trading him last winter and signing Soriano been a realistic option?

The year to year control was nice to have.

He really hasn’t been THAT bad this year… his stuff and velo are still excellent. He’s just got a 2 cent head.

by alskor on Aug 14, 2010 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

If he has a 2 cent head, then what does Carlos Zambrano have?
Oh yeah… JJ Putz sucks in South Side Chicago. He’s not the monster he used to be with the Seattle Shipwrecks.

Then what do you call a 0.85 WHIP

and a 5.9 K/BB ratio?

Oh.. Rafael Soriano of the Tampa Bay Gays.
Jon Pap for him?

Soriano is a FA after this year

And for F%^$s sake can you just call them the Rays?

I don't mind keeping him,

but I think we should maybe add something to the pen this offseason. Are there any FAs that stand out to you? What about Putz or Soriano? Egos might get in the way.

They're all going to want to close... and anyone really good and proven will mean draft pick compensation...

I’d imagine they target a guy they like in trade or grab what they perceive as a relative value arm in free agency. Hard to imagine them spending on a reliever with:

-having to resign or try to resign 3 important players
-in lieu of that, having to find replacements
-the fact that relievers are terrible investments

by alskor on Aug 15, 2010 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Be scared...

If Jon Pap becomes a Bankee AND he resurrects his very fearsome self that made us dangerous during our title years…

NOW THAT IS FUCKING SCARY!!!

Right now, Jon Pap is making us the Boston Red Chokes!

I think he meant he’d be scared if Papelbon became a Yankee and then returned to the dominant level he was playing at a few years ago.
