Trade Remix: Cliff Lee Heading To Rangers, Not Yankees

SEATTLE - APRIL 30: Starting pitcher Cliff Lee #36 of the Seattle Mariners pitches against the Texas Rangers at Safeco Field on April 30, 2010 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)

Buster Olney, you were wrong. Hooray!

i have learned deal done with #Rangers, Smoak and 3 others for Lee and reliever Mark Lowe #Rangers, #Mariners

This means that the Yankees will be trying like hell to get a different start not named Lee in their rotation. Thankfully, the best available starter just went off the market and the Yankees can go nowhere but down.

The Reds were also in the running for Lee. I was hoping that would happen so Lee would exit the American League, but this is certainly 100 times better than him dashing to New York.

Thank you, Seattle Mariners!

Whatever

The Yankees will just sign him in the offseason.

I'd rather him have gone to the Yankees so it would have been that much better beating them in the ALCS...

W.E. we’ll just have to settle with beating the Yankees and Oswalt in the ALCS now lol!

How are the Red Sox gonna beat the Yankees in the ALCS when they finish 3rd in the AL East? You should be worry about just making the playoffs at this point.

by BxBigDrew on Jul 10, 2010 1:19 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Meh

I’d rather they lose Montero, personally.

Consider that, if we make it to the postseason, we’ll have to go through Lee anyways most likely, and ick.

The Sox chances of making it to the post season..

are better with Lee in Texas rather than NY or TB.

Who’s getting upset? Almost everybody at PSA was thrilled that the trade fell through, and they were particularly happy that Adams (who is a great player in his own right) caused its downfall.

HAHA New York just lost out on LeBron and now Cliff Lee lol...

Well Cliff Lee for this season. We all know he is going there over the off season.

that's ok

we would probably have had to face him more times, this season had he gone to MFY.

Next year will take care of itself.

I don't think the Yankees will be looking for a starter particularly

they were looking for Lee because he was available and awesome, they don’t need one.

To be honest, if we make the playoffs, now there’s a good chance we’ll be facing Lee, and I’m not thrilled about that. Wish the Reds had stepped it up…

I don't think Werth is going anywhere.

I think the Phils will try and win this year.

I'd like him this year, but at what cost?

Why should we get him?

I mean, I thought we should trade all our players. I thought you said our season was already over.

Giving up Werth would mean they're giving up their season.

I agree, he isn’t going anywhere.

I have to disagree

When you say that the Yankees will chase another starter not named Lee. They don’t need another starting pitcher.. they need a bench player and a reliever.

My only concerns with the Yanks rotation....

1. Can Pettite keep it up?

2. Will Burnett become more consistent?

3. How many more innings for Hughes?

4. Which Vazquez shows up come post season?

I think it's interesting

that rather than the Yankees trying to drive up Lee’s cost, it looks like Seattle was using NY to drive up his price.

by wolf9309 on Jul 9, 2010 6:33 PM EDT reply actions

Now this trade makes sense

The Yankee deal just made no sense, even though the trade didnt surprise me. How could MFY give up their C replacement.

Me thinks…Seattle just used the MFY to get what they really wanted from the Rangers.

While I can't really feel bad about the Yankees not getting Cliff Lee...

… I’m unhappy with this result.

I’d rather face: Yankees + 5 yr, 3 mos of Cliff Lee – Montero, Adams, McCallister + first rounder in 2011

than: Yankees + 5 yr of Cliff Lee + ~10 years of Montero and the rest – first rounder in 2011

It’s been a can’t-win month on and off the field, until tonight’s game against Toronto

Wait 'til next/this year?

I suppose you're probably right...

… I meant three years and two Yankee-years (the years he’ll be paid, but no one expects him to be good for).

:-D

Why assume us MFYers are after a starter? It was folly to mortgage the farm for Lee, when we already have 5 good starters, so the marginal improvement would be very minimal.

What’s the point in gutting the system for a rental, when our worst starter is A.J. Burnett? If I’m running the MFY train, I stand pat and let Jesus and everyone develop into some serious cost controlled production for the next ~6 years.
