Game 103: Tigers (51-50) @ Red Sox (58-44) -- July 30, 2010
Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox, Jul 30, 2010 7:10 PM EDT
The Red Sox seem to have caught the Tigers at the right time. Good news, given that we can't afford to lose right now.
That shouldn't--shouldn't be an issue tonight, as Jon Lester will take the mound for the Red Sox.
The Tigers will send out he who was actually robbed of a perfect game, Armando Galarraga. It's hardly been a perfect season for Armando.
You'd think after his last start, Lester might get a reprieve from Eric Patterson. No such lucky, as the man who can't play baseball is in left field tonight, opposite the other man who can't play baseball who's filling in for the still-aching Drew.
Go Sox!

Still no Drew in the lineup.....
Hope it isn’t serious we can’t afford to lose another impact bat.
Looks like the Soxs were inquiring about Jim Edmonds as well, that might mean Drew is hurt, but we don’t want to DL him before the deadline so we don’t appear desperate and overpay.
Or, like myself
They prefer him off the bench compared to Patterson/Hermida

That's another reasonable option, but personally I like Nava off the bench more than trading anything for Edmonds.
Also if he plays well it could build trade value for Nava, Edmonds is 40 years old and has been hurt.
Imagine an outfield with both Edmonds AND Ells?

So he got it out of his mind. He’ll settle down now.

Lowrie doesn't have HR power, but he doesn't swing and miss by 3 feet.

I agree, and to be honest you don't need HR power if you can hit doubles like a madman with RISP.
I’d rather have someone who constantly produces, than a guy who hits a solo run HR every once in a blue moon.

The Astros are picking up a lot of the money owed to Berkman and won't obtain top prospects in return, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney.
The Astros will pay $4MM of the $7.5MM Berkman will make between his salary and the buyout, according to Sherman
Both off MLBtrade
That kind of pisses me off.
I'd have liked to see the Yankees give up a little bit more.

Downs!!!
I hear they only want our entire farm system
We always need bullpen help. But let’s not forget that our outfield is crap. Tito and Theo would never admit it but Herm/Patt/Hall as OFers must turn their stomachs. Yes Ells is back soon but the guy has player 9 MLB games this year. We don’t know what we will get. Plus Cameron is hurt and Drew too. We need a solid OF with a bat as much as a reliever. We have to get leads before a good reliever matters.

That's the thing if we are going after outfield help, why wasn't it done weeks ago before our offense took a crap.
To get an outfielder now for a few weeks before Ells comes back doesn’t make sense.
The prices were very high, and it’s probably good that we did nothing. Kalish is cheap and controlled for years. He’s too valuable given the current state of the OF

Those players might suck,
and the Yankees might get the ones we want. Youkilis, Buchholz, and Lester all had thebopportunity to be traded earlier in their careers. It’s no guarantee these guys ever make it in the bigs, but you can’t go and throw away the future.

fuck it, let's catch them both.
it’ll be sweet to turn it on and steal a division like the Yanks have time and time again.
I can't stand Patterson, useless.
At least hermida drove in a bunch of runs in May and seemed to get some huge hits vs. the Yanks.
that's 3 more weeks. I can't take more than 3 weeks of patterson.
Why the hell is he playing ahead of DMAC? With Lowrie, we don’ t need Pattersons 2B abilities around anymore. Hell, put NavAAAA back on the team.

Patterson is as good as gone, but Hermida will stick around. At least Cash has a good arm. Hall has some power though no hand-eye corrdination

You got to blame the offense here.
They did jack shit for 8 1/3. How was anyone supposed to know they’d wake up in the bottom of the 9th with one out? It wasn’t even close, it was 6-1. If you’re going to blame Wake for giving up 2 when we were already losing 4-1 with no signs of life from the offense, blame Lester for giving up the first 4.
Just because they're losing doesn't excuse giving up runs.
Nobody wants to put too much blame on Lester because he ha been great all year. This is more of a frustration blame because the bullpen has once again significantly contributed to a loss.

I think Lester was more of a contribution tonight
Or rather, more than the bullpen, defense had just as much responsibility as well.
It happens, sometimes it’s not the bullpen’s fault we lose, it’s the starter’s, even great ones like Lester.

He hasn't been great all year...
he started off terrible, or “slow” if you want to be PC. Lester gave up 4 runs (two HRs to Peralta mind you) and Wake gave up 2. We were never in the lead, so both contributed to the loss.
I’m not so enamored with Lester that I’m going to pass the buck onto someone else, especially when the offense had given him 1 run of support. He’s a great pitcher, I’m glad he’s on the team, and he’s due an off night from time to time, but to blame the bullpen in a game we weren’t in into the bottom of the 9th is using hindsight.
I’m not blaming it all on Wake specifically, but he, Theo, and Tito have really screwed up the pen. See in my comment below: Why is Wake on the team?

He can’t be great every game. He put up some ridiculous numbers in the first half. It’s hard to do that in the AL

That was the worst loss of the season
The certified ambassador of all things good and great, here at OTM.
Disagree
Remember that game in April (or was it early May?) against Tampa? Extra innings, at home, Sox get the bases loaded with no outs and don’t score. THAT was the worst. This is second-worst.

Lester is to blame also, but why is Wake even on the team anymore? I get that he’s the long reliever, but Atch did a pretty good job with that. We can’t have Wake taking Bowden or Manuel’s spot.

You got me...
I keep expecting the knuckleball to regain it’s magic but it isn’t happening and may never again. My guess, is down 3 runs that late in the game with the offense doing nothing, Tito took a chance to try and preserve the more “reliable” relievers for the rest of the series.
I would figure if it was a game Tito thought we’d win he would’ve used someone else. But the bullpen itself and his handling of it has been so schizophrenic and awful I could just be grasping at straws.
YES!
You get my point. I’m not saying we should have used Bard there. I’m saying that the bullpen entity has been awful all year. The bad play of the pitchers, Theo’s decisions, and Tito’s decisions have all contributed to this mess. Wake himself isn’t to blame; the bullpen itself is and events that led to Wake even possibly being in that situation.

More pampering of the tinks (Ellsbury and now Drew) by management, along with a relatively poor start by Lester and a typical poor showing by the bullpen, has resulted in yet another loss. As stated a couple weeks ago, apparently our prima donna tinks cannot play until they are 125% and by that time the Sox will be so far out the playoff picture that it won’t matter. Actually, I think we reached that point tonight.
Lowrie is clutch!!!!
Youk’s getting the free walk…come on Papi!!!
