Nava Optioned to Pawtucket to make way for Hermida
According to the Globe's Amalie Benjamin, Daniel Nava has been optioned back down to Pawtucket to make room for Jeremy Hermida's expected callup tomorrow. Apparently the Sox have decided that the struggling roster would be better off replacing a switch-hitting left fielder who has been doing great at the plate with a lefty who can't field or hit well. There are a few good reasons to do this, but I know who I'd rather have in Boston...

Sad Reality
Unless the Sox eat Hermida’s contract and DFA him. Not a likely scenario since he actually does drive in runs (not much else). McDonald is needed to spot Cameron in CF, so that’s just how it goes.

Nava drives in runs too

or humorously sad. Take your pick.
In either case, I knew it was coming, but… damn.
The good news is that if Hermida hits well in the next 2 weeks, he might be tradable.
sad
ostensibly because he is ‘more versatile’ – being able to play more OF positions as well as 2B.
But there is just one problem: Patterson can’t freakin’ hit. He’s terrible.
Plus, with Lowrie back, I don’t get why we need him on defense.
I would keep Nava, D-Mac, Hall & Lowrie and get rid of Patterson and Hermida.
Am I right that Hermida is getting paid 3.345m ?!!!?
Are we hoping he turns good again like BJ Upside?

Nava
Jeeeze Theo, Lose Hermida and keep Daniel Nava, this is a no brainer
well it's not such a great loss.
The advantage of dropping Nava over anyone else is we can bring him back. If not before, he’ll surely be up in september.
Theo hates to give up players he still controls
DFAing Hermida or Patterson was not an option for him when Nava still has options. This allows the team to retain all three of them.

yup, although I imagine Patterson's time is very limited anyways
can’t imagine him sticking once Pedroia is back.
me sad

Hey now
I’m not sure I’d call a .788 OPS with HIS defense “ready”.
He needs some more seasoning in Single-A, clearly.

Actually
I just checked his career Minor League numbers. I didn’t realize they’d skipped AAA with him when he first came up for Florida.
Seems like a bad idea

You gotta maintain that $ 800K average annual payroll somehow...

is this some joke?
Nava is a better player in every possible way.
Are they trying to sell hermida… I don’t understand this.
yeah I think they're hoping he can get some value
I don’t know if he’s better in every possible way. I’d say I was equally uncomfortable with both of them defending. Maybe a little more uncomfortable with Nava, but that might just be because it’s fresher in my mind.
May the law of averages will work out and he’ll work up to his career average OPS by smoking through the rest of the year…
