Game 95: Red Sox (53-41) @ Athletics (47-47)
Boston Red Sox at Oakland Athletics, Jul 21, 2010 3:35 PM EDT
So first they go on the West Coast and treat us to 10:00 PM games...
And now they play at 3:35 in the middle of the week?
Man, if I were a productive member of society at the moment, I'd be really annoyed.
Anyways, it's time for the rubber game, featuring a (hopefully) healthy Clay Buchholz!
The A's send the awesomely named Gio Gonzalez to the mound in opposition.
Also featuring: the return of Jed Lowrie! But Darnell McDonald is leading off. Ugh, Terry, why do you hate switching the lineup spots around so much?
The Rays and Yanks are both leading late. Not one we want to lose.

god, soon I hope
they said he’s playing catch and hitting from both sides of the plate. He just can’t catch consistently yet without too much pain. Hopefully will be soon.
Francona said he won’t need rehab- specifically he said it would be silly to send him back 3 time zones to get three at bats and then bring him back, so he’s at the very least hoping he’ll be activated at some point during this west coast trip. Sounds promising, but just depends on his level of pain.
Yeah, he's been intentionally walked up the wazoo
and even when he’s not, they won’t throw him strikes.
I hope he continues to be patient.

He takes a ton of strikes, alot of first pitch meatballs.
And falls behind in counts constantly. I’m not a big stat whore, but night after night, something I’ve observed. He urks me.
He’s also not too great in the field.
Amongst other things, I really liked Alex Gonzalez. It’s not so much that Scoot is bad per se, I just don’t think he’s that good either.

Vic needs to come back tomorrow. Seriously
Seattle pitching is damn good. And our offense is damn bad. This road trip is going to kill us man. Really sucks about all these injuries, its too bad.
This team is in a serious downward spiral
Unless the Rays and Yanks start playing teams that are actually legitimate, our schedule is a bit too brutal to make a run.
Want Theo to have a plan for next year

It might be depending on length

Last time Lester, now Buchholz?
Offence down, our two best pitchers are down.
Please someone say to me we can still have a hope.
There are still 67 games left, but I just want to see at least a hint of bright side of this team.
Nobody thought we were goin to sustain such above average play with all these injuries
we’ve come back down to earth. sucks to admit, but its the reality of the situation.
The Rays and Yanks are far too good for us to continue fielding AAA players and expect to win games and gain ground in the MLB.
Sucks, but that’s life. Next year it is.
But everyone is getting healthy now
So your point is irrelevant. We fall of in the last week, that’s not enough to knock us out. We closed 8+ games over the span of two months, we can’t do it again?

I agree with Ben
Schedules are comparable for Rays and Yanks to finish the season as well.
Lot of time left, though it would certainly feel better if things are a bit closer
Youk got trampled on making an out at first.
Lowrie’s throw was a bit towards the outfield, Youk had to stretch basically right along the line, and Davis ran over him. He’s OK.

I'd love Pedey in 10, but I think that's a tad too optimistic
I haven’t read much on how he’s healing but Feet can take a while to get to 100% and the way he plays coming back too early could put him right back on the DL
“He actually took BP on the field yesterday with that boot on,” Francona said. “He’s doing everything in his power to be ready.” Francona joked that Pedroia is full of energy, and now that he can’t spend that energy on playing, he’s driving everyone crazy. “He’s like a caged animal,” Francona said. “We have got to get him back in the lineup or someone is going to kill him.”
He’s off crutches, cleared for weight bearing activity, and Tito said two weeks four days ago, so yeah, 10 days.

I just remember when I fractured my foot, it’s one of those things that you can re-fracture or break fully very easily. When he comes back, it would be good to see him every other day or DH some also – keep pressure of the foot
Not a lot of bats in the line up right now
That corresponds to the latest group of injuries more then anything else to me.
Anyone think Lowell, Doubrant and cash could get Iannetta and Betancourt from Colorado?
Or did I pick the wrong day to stop sniffing glue?
They aren't trading Iannetta...now
They want to contend and might need him for 1B. Plus, I don’t get why they want Olivo instead of him

Sox have rarely played well in Oakland, going back like 20 years.
this is nothing new – this field is Hell for them
I think it's frustrating because we havn't played well this year against bad teams, A's O's have two of the worst offenses in baseball.
It’s depressing that we are losing because we can’t keep up with the A’s offense. I’d rather games be blow outs than these close games where we pitch well and it’s the offense that’s killing us.

Again - why I think we need to re-sign V-Mart.
I’m not down with the ‘conventional wisdom’ that he will not be able to catch long term.
Catchers simply suck in MLB right now. There are barely any that can hit. If you have one that can hit at all, you shouldn’t let him slip away.
I'd rather sign players because they are good, versus everyone else is worse.
I get what you are saying but I don’t think that would be money well spent. You’d need to sign Vmart for 4yrs minimum I’d guess and within 2 years catching look entirely different.
Certainly you could move Victor to DH at that point, but I’m not sold on his value at DH.
I’m not 100% against resigning him, I’m just not sure he’s going to be worth what he’ll ask/get
We are about to lose a ton of salary in the next two years.
I agree that you shouldn’t overspend, but the fact is, catchers that can hit are an extremely rare commodity. Its a seller’s market.
I definitely do not want to move him to DH or 1B. His value is that he can hit and that he can catch.
I agree, but we really have to watch it with these long term deals.

I'm not advocating stupidity - but sometimes being too cautious
can leave you with … no solution.
We have nobody in the system at C who can hit. Wagner’s nice, but he’s not a great hitter.
Who is out there that we can acquire? I don’t see anybody.
Iannetta
I don’t see him as a long term option, but maybe he’s a stop gap until Lavarnway/Ibarra is ready. I want them to talk to Vic, but stay away from a 4 year deal.

V-Mart is not that old
especially in ‘catcher years’ since he didn’t start playing catcher until he was in the minors. His total games caught is not much more than Mauer.
I am not worried about a 4 year deal – he’ll likely still be productive then – its all about the price for those 4 years.

Extra sweet that he nailed Coco
but I wish Bowden was demonstrated less of a need for stellar defense
Didnt Bowden used to reach 92-93 on his fastball?
His fastest so far is 91.
Could be gun variance, I guess.
He's a shoulder injury waiting to happen
Unless the coaches do something
Coaching visit
Say, Michael – how about throwing a few more 89-91 mph fastballs? They seem to be working.
Are we possibly hoping Bowden shows something
so that he can be traded at the deadline?
Okay - he got out of the inning clean
but 4 batters getting 2 hits wasn’t exactly dominant.
Hmm.... why not start the inning with Scutaro

I am NOT seeing any value in keeping him.
Especially with Lowrie back – we don’t need Patterson’s ability to play 2B.
Hall already sucks as the utility guy who can play infield and outfield. But he sucks a lot less than Patterson has and we don’t need two guys like that.
