In 2004 after the greatest comeback in sports history occurred. There sat the Boss in his box with his cronies. Seething at the fact that the Redsoxs, of all teams had completed the comeback and sent there beloved Yankees golfing. George could have done what most expected of him and sent out security to the field to usher off the celebrating AL champs to the clubhouse and get all the Redsoxs fans out of there stadium. Instead George did what few had guessed. He turned to his security teams and said " let them celebrate, they earned it".
I love my soxs. Every player, every year. When I was younger and full of piss an vinegar I would say things that wouldn’t be to nice about this man. As I got smarter and older I realized that the feelings about him had changed.
The reason that the Redsoxs won the WS in 04 and to a lesser extent the 07 one was him. Not so much George but his attitude towards winning and putting the highest caliber team out there every single season, every single game. The Soxs had a choice either play with them of keep getting retreads of old all stars and hope they could compete. Canseco, Dawson, Saberhagen, Viola just to name a few that jump off my head.
The soxs brought in a new ownership group and they wanted to win and beat the great Yankees. When the Soxs acquired Manny Ramirez from Cleveland you could tell he was a great central piece for a championship team. The tide had turned at least in the smallest way, but this was the start.
I look back now and I want to say thank you George. Thank you for pushing the Redsoxs(the Rays too for that matter) to be a better team. Proving the likes of Troy O’Leary and Darren Bragg's of the world just won't cut it. Great guys, but we needed great ball players as well.
George's truly class act in 04, the way he changed baseball (for the better, I think) and his great relationship with Billy Martin, these are the things I will always think about when people bring up the Boss.
I don't hate him or the Yankees or even his sons. I feel you have to care a whole bunch to hate something or someone. At this point in my life I don't care for them, but I will never hate them agian. Hating takes too much time and effort. I have my golf game if I want to work on something.
