George Steinbrenner Dies After Massive Heart Attack

In very sad and shocking news, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has died this morning following a massive heart attackk late Monday night.

It doesn't matter what your feelings are about him -- whether you're a Yankees fan, a Red Sox fan, or a Pirates fan --  Steinbrenner, 80, has been a major player in professional baseball since the early 1970s. He has been baseball's most well-known owner for almost that entire time as well.

As Red Sox fans, we may not have liked him because he was known to spend anything to get whatever he wanted, but no one ever said he wasn't good at his job.

RIP George

The greatest rivalry in sports would have been nothing really if it weren’t for you as you operated one of the most successful teams in the history of baseball, that’s something everyone can agree on.

If every team had an owner as passsionate and demanded as George, the MLB would be a better place

He did a tremendous amount for the Yankees and for MLB. Might have been easy may to dislike as a Sox fans, but it was impossible not to respect him

End of an era … sorry to hear it.

May he rest in peace, even as a sox fan, I had much respect for him, he was a great owner. Sad day for yanks fans, and baseball fans, too.

George represented the best and worst of MLB ownership

But he was absolutely one of the most influential figures in baseball, and will continue to be for years to come. RIP

Well said

The Boss drove me nuts when he was running the Yankees, but everyone needs a good nemesis, including the Red Sox. George played that role well. He was part of the Red Sox’ identity. His passing is truly the end of an era.

But haven't you heard?

Our class is just a media-driven creation of East Coast bias. Only the Angels are classy, having had all the practice which comes with years and years of (continuing) mediocrity.

Ignore them.

Don't forget that steroids are the fuel that drives this team.

Payroll. ’Roids. East Coast Bias. Higher ratings from Yankees and Sox games.

Got it.

Gotta say, I am a fan of that warm weather. Maybe as we’re from the Northeast we can just buy all of California’s sunshine, or perhaps buy some chemical enhancers that give us equal or greater sunshine.

The bias isn't just media

Remember, the umpires are on our side and Mariano Rivera throws a spitball while they look the other way.

by YankeesRock on Jul 13, 2010 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah yes, the spitball that had the same cutter speed and movement as every other cutter he threw that inning. One of my favorite Halos Heaven moments.

Eulogy.

I felt compelled to write this after watching the day-long outpouring. Say what you want, but the man casts a large shadow.
