Minor Lines 7/11/10: Quick Kalish, Rehabbing Beckett
I was just gonna make this a two day piece until I realized there's 7 games today despite the All-Star break for Pawtucket.
Pawtucket W 2-1
Ryan Kalsih: 2-3, 2B, BB, 3 SB
-Kalish is now 22-for-23 in stolen base attempts. It's always been a part of his game, but to this extent?
Aaron Bates: 0-4, 2 K
Lars Anderson: 2-3, BB, K, SB
Mark Wagner: 1-3, BB
Josh Reddick: 0-3, BB
Jorge Jimenez: 1-3, BB
Josh Beckett: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
Rich Hill: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Michael Bowden: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Tony does it again after the jump.
Portland W 7-3
Che-Hsuan Lin: 0-4, BB
Yamaico Navarro: 2-3, 2 BB
-Has ridiculous home-away splits in favor of home. Wonder if it's the Maine Monster?
Luis Exposito: 0-5, K
Anthony Rizzo: 1-4, HR, BB, 2 K
Casey Kelly: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Lowell L 1-4
Kolbrin Vitek: 0-4, K, SB
Jed Lowrie: 2-3, 2B
Miles Head: 0-4, K
Bryce Brentz: 1-4, 2 K
Seth Schwindenhammer: 0-4, 2 K

I was down in Pawtucket
He looked pretty good at it, I think he got a first pitch strike against each batter he faced, but then wasn’t terribly efficient, kept getting them up to full counts before they got out. Still as a converted starter, his stamina should hold up over relief appearances.
I’ll post some more thoughts on other players…
a few thoughts from Pawtucket
because I made it down for my first Pawsox game of the season, finally. Obviously, these impressions are based on one game, so take them with whatever grains of salt you want.
First, Beckett looked great. Velocity was there. He wasn’t terribly efficient, but it seemed to me like his goal wasn’t necessarily to be efficient- it looked like he was in large part trying to focus on getting the 2 seamer over the (umpire’s) left side of the plate consistently, rather than necessarily trying to get through batters quickly- which makes sense in my head since he was having trouble repeating his delivery. But that led to a good amount of 3 ball counts early on. Also worth noting that the guy that homered off him has a AAA OPS of .974… All in all, he seemed to know exactly what he was going for and generally was dominating.
Kalish was the player that impressed me the most. Not only did he steal like crazy, but the one time they got him out was on a pretty hard liner. His two hits two hits were also impressive looking line drives. Very easy looking swing and knew exactly
which pitches he wanted.
Which could not be said for Reddick, who looked like his major league self, with some very nasty swings and misses on breaking pitches. He did walk, but it was on an at-bat which Vlad probably would’ve walked on.
Lars looked good to me. It’s worth noting that the time he struck out, it was looking on a pitch which to me (from seats right behind the plate) looked too far inside. He had a couple of nice plays at first, leaping onto the tarp to catch a foul, and getting a tag on a runner who didn’t manage to get back to first in time on a ball hit to right and fired in by Bubba Bell.
As for Wagner, I was kind of disappointed that he took a long time getting the ball out with a runner stealing second. They also managed a double-steal, but that was with Rich Hill on the mound, who throws 70-72 and was throwing low.
Hill looked terrible. Obviously he’s not a power pitcher, but also just wasn’t fooling anybody. I was surprised he got out of the inning unscathed.
