Varitek injured? WTF?!!!!!
According to multiple news sources, Jason Varitek has joined the long list of injured Red Sox with a broken foot. He's expected to be out 4-6 weeks!

The Red Sox have re-acquired Kevin Cash from the Houston Astros.
Wow - this is getting ridiculous.
Right now we have the following injured that I can think of off the top of my head:
- Jacoby Ellsbury,
- Josh Beckett
- Victor Martinez
- Dustin Pedroia
- Jason Varitek
- Manny Delcarmen
- Jeremy Hermida
Wow.

So basically, out of our projected starting lineup,
We have 1.5/4 outfielders
3/4 infielders
0/2 catchers
3/5 starting pitching
Out of the original 25-man roster, like 8 have been/are going to be on the DL for an extended period of time. Out of the opening day lineup, 5/9 have spent significant time on the DL, and Cameron is still iffy.
Yup, that pretty much sums it up.
If anything, the fact that we are only 1.5 gms back at this point is a major testament to the depth and strength of the organization.
The players that have been called up and asked to step up have, at least situationally, done so. That’s a credit to both Theo for stockpiling good players and to Tito, for being able to juggle the lineup, rotation and pen with all these new, changing parts.
The problem is, over time, it is not realistic to expect us to keep getting blood from a stone. We need our top-line regulars to be healthy.
All we really need is for the subs and scrubs to keep us in wild card position
When we get all the starters back, assuming they play like starters — I’m talking about you, Beckett — we’ll be in great shape for the stretch.
This sucks

this is true
and with Tek on the DL now, having Martinez play first if necessary when he comes back sounds a lot less appealing with Kevin Cash catching. But we have so many spots that need to be filled that there’s really not anyone we can afford to drop. I’d guess if something happened to take Youk out for a game (and not a DL stint) that probably Ortiz would take the game. DL stint and we can call somebody up.
This is kinda fun. Any bets on whos gonna get injured today? I’m thinking Scutaro.
Beltre?
Over all that may be what is best for the team. if he’s out we can get a little healthier.

he is clearly indestructible.
It’s a good thing he has the range he has, because I think by about August 1, he will have to be covering every position on the field except first.
he is clearly indestructible
This is what worries me. What if his attention is turned to our starting rotation? Lester, Clay, Lackey? We’re doomed. Something needs to be done about Beltre. Maybe he should be traded… to the Yankees to play DH or something. Enjoy your cracked ribs ARod.

Ortiz is our backup infielder.
At least for daily things. Anything longer than a couple of games and another panic trade needs to be made.
