2010 MLB Draft, Day Two: Open Thread
EDITOR'S NOTE: Boosting this to the top of the page.
Since the draft re-opens today at noon, let's have an open thread so we can chat up all the happenings.
If you missed it, the Red Sox made out pretty well in Day One:
Pick 20: 2B Kolbrin Vitek, Ball State
Pick 36: OF Bryce Brentz, Middle Tenn. State
Pick 39: P Anthony Ranaudo, LSU
Today you won't have to wait too long to hear a new name entering the Red Sox farm system. The Sox will draft 57th overall. The draft re-starts at pick No. 51.

PLUS CUTTER
All that needs be said.
But just to say more, mid-90s fastball, can hit spots, needs to develop secondary pitches some, but doesn’t need to learn any new pitches, basically.
Notice last night’s game recap for a hidden name drop.

If the Red Sox sign all their top-6 picks, this could go down as one of the best the team has had.

Henry Ramos out of Puerto Rico
BA’s Take:
The best power belongs to switch-hitting outfielder Henry Ramos, who stands 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds with a strong, athletic frame. He is relatively new to baseball, spending most of his youth as a soccer player, and his power shows up more during batting practice than in games. When he connects the ball jumps off his bat and goes a long way. Rosario is a below-average runner but is athletic enough and has the arm strength to play right field. He has good makeup and just needs to play every day in order to turn his tools into performance.

Might see Ty Linton in the next couple of rounds
We had reported interest in him. Aviles too, but he’s got a bad arm and will fall.

I think the Sox just took Kendrick Perkins
heh.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
Yep, raw athlete from Texas

Ramos and Perkins are both high-cieling picks.
Chris Hernandez is kind of dull. Can finesse both sides of the plate, but I don’t know if that projects as much more than a long man or a serviceable 7th inning guy at best.

Does Boston believe the draft rules are going to be changed
in the near future?
To sign all in the 8 rounds so far will be some $$$.
Who knows?
Maybe they’re hedging their bets? Maybe they’re just convinced that with the increasing prices in FA, this is the best way to go about things.
USG
lots of guys are signing or expected to sign near slot.
IF we sign Ranaudo it will be last minute – and by that point everyone has forgotten.
Also, with new draft rules and a new slotting system on the horizon they may see this as one of the last chances to exploit their economic advantage…

It does give the impression
that the Sox are taking advantage of their wealth and using it to the utmost. It’ll be interesting to see how much we have spent in bonus dollars, come time to sign Ranaudo.
I have a good feeling at five o’clock on the second day of the 2010 Draft.
Now let’s win some games in interleague play and finish June strong.

Not a hugely impressive arm unless he fills out more than expected though.
90 MPH fastball is about all he’s got.

Michael Hollenbeck prep catcher
From BA:
Catcher Mike Hollenbeck’s receiving skills are raw, but he has a strong arm, lefthanded power potential and a pro body (6-foot-2, 210 pounds). The buzz is that the catching-needy Red Sox could take him in the first 10 rounds.

Stephen Wilkerson is of note.
Big tools that need polish. Signability pick with a Clemson commitment.

I was wondering where Allie went.
Power arm without much secondary stuff. I think he has bad control.
