Victor Martinez Fractures Left Thumb
More injury troubles for the Red Sox. After taking two foul tips off his thumb, Victor Martinez had to leave the final game of the series against the Giants in the fourth inning. He was later diagnosed with a fractured left thumb.
So far, Victor and Terry Francona have said the injury might not require a trip to the disabled list depending on the swelling. With Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Josh Beckett already sidelined by injuries, the team can ill afford to lose another big part of their team like Martinez.

WE NEED KURT SUZUKI RIGHT NOW
I'd take him if he were cheap, but he isn't.
Good things happen when Beltre is on his knees.

Kurt Suzuki is great, BUT
he is
A) not as great as he always looks when he plays the Sox
and
B) going to cost a ridiculous amount. Lets see how long VMart will be out before we go yelling for big moves.
B) I think some people forget who runs Oakland. Beane doesn’t lose.

I wouldn't mind trading for him, but you have to take this into consideration.
Do you want him to be our catcher for the next 5 years? If you’re gonna go and get an expensive guy, he better be in our long term plans.

I mean, it wouldn't make sense now anyways
Victor is doing fine and it’s not like he broke his hip, he fractured the tip of his thumb. Which should heal quick and he really just needs to wait for the swelling to go down enough to swing. If it does end up being a DL trip, it should be pretty close to a minimum length one. No sense in trading for a long-term catcher because of that and then, by effect, having to trade Martinez because he’d have no place to play.
I meant in the offseason or next season once we know who's coming back.
I like Vic’s bat a lot

Ah yeah, then it definitely makes sense
as long as he could be had for a price he is worth- he is offensively probably a bit above average for a catcher, but does not get on base much, and defensively is pretty well-regarded. He’s a solid player, but not a star. The A’s have a prospect they like waiting in the wings, so that may lower his cost a little, but knowing Beane, not by much. We’ll see how everything goes by the end of the season.
Jeezus - can our injury luck get any worse?
The health-karma HAS to start swinging the other way soon …. right?
Oh FFS!
What the hell is going on? Beckett, Dice-K, Cameron, Ellsbury, Drew, Lowell, Pedrioa and now Martinez???
We better be on pace for the luckiest second half in the history of baseball with all the bad luck we’ve had so far.

God Dammit
I go to Pennsylvania for 2 days and we lose our catcher, MVP 2nd baseman and best starter. Not cool.

LOL - I went to PA for the last two days too.
So I guess it could have been my fault as well.
After my Blazer's last season and now all this...
I think I may be a pox on whatever teams I love =(

If Vic goes to the DL, who gets the call?

Mark Wagner's hurt, Dusty Brown's hurt.
Believe it or not, it could be Luis Exposito in Portland unless you think Gustavo Molina or Juan Apodaca deserve a chance first. I don’t.
It would/ should be Expo.
If he did get the call, he’d be insurance and might not play at all

Expo's been not so good this year in AA
I think if VMart gets DL’d we pick up somebody cheap and crappy to backup Tek.
We know Cash can catch Wake.
Anyone think of a another cheap short term back up out there who can catch the knuckle?
Gustavo Molina to be back up catcher in Boston.
He may only be up until a better replacement can be found.

Sox are looking at Kevin Cash with VMart going on the 15 day DL.
