Red Sox Option Reddick to Pawtucket, Call Up Fabio Castro
In dire need of bullpen help after last night's exhausting game, the Red Sox have sent outfielder Josh Reddick back to Pawtucket, replacing him with lefty reliever Fabio Castro.
Castro seems like an odd choice, as he has had no real success in Pawtucket so far on the year. Castro has posted a 6.65 ERA in 43 innings, walking 22 and striking out 36. He has had nearly 50 innings of Major League experience, however, with a career best 1.54 ERA during his 2006 campaign with Philadelphia.

Im glad they sent Reddick down, its obvious hes not ready yet.
He looks nervous as Hell. We dont need him right now, its better he rebuilds his confedence with Pawtucket.

If Boston takes Manuel, the Pawtucket will suck.
wouldn’t want that to happen.

I guess he's better than Castro.
That might be a good move, maybe Bowden could stick with the team. Then we wouldn’t have to worry about him being a starter.

Makes sense.
Fabio most likely will only face lefties. Righties lit him up early in the season. He has improved his April WHIP of 2.23 to a June WHIP of 1.2 and April/May LD% of over 24% is now down in June to 8.8% with 47 batters faced in June. Looks mostly to be a short term emergency band aid.
He is our 37th man to make the 25 man roster in 2010.
off topic

How many options does Reddick have?
This seems like a lot of juggling with him.
He probably had 3 option years in his contract
And he’s used up two of them so far. Doesn’t matter much, if he isn’t ready next year then he runs the risk of getting the AAAA tag anyway.
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
Options go year to year.
This year’s is used, so he can move as much as they want him to.

No matter how many times Reddick goes
back and forth from Pawtucket to Boston this year, it still only counts as one option. The option is good for the whole year. After the 2010 season, Reddick should still have 2 option years remaining.
Use this cheat sheet link and scroll down to “options”.
I don’t know how it works, he was with the team last year in august, does that not count as an option?
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
Reddick did come up from AA the first week of August '09
and then was optioned to AAA. Then he came back when the rosters expanded in September. It does look like he burned one option last year and another this year, so it must be one option remaining next year.
SoxProspects.com still has him listed as 3 options remaining but it must need updating.
This still confuses me a bit as to how they count his years of service for a fourth option exemption:
A player may be eligible for a fourth option year if he has been optioned in three seasons but does not yet have five full seasons of professional experience. A full season is defined as being on an active pro roster for at least 90 days in a season. (If a player is put on the disabled list after earning 60 or more days of service in a single season, his time on the DL is counted.) The 90-day requirement means short-season leagues (New-York Penn, Northwest, Pioneer, Appalachian, Gulf Coast, Arizona Rookie, Dominican and Venezuelan Summer Leagues) do not count as full seasons for the purposes of determining eligibility for a fourth option.
if he's played pro ball for less than 5 years, he can be optioned in his fourth year
Strasburg, for example, was just drafted and brought up. So they’ll have 3 more years after this one in which they can option him, if they so desire. Basically only applies to people who make the majors VERY quickly, and those people usually don’t get sent down too often.
I just got this email back from Chris Hatfield,
one of the owners at SoxProspects.com;
Looks like Reddick will still have 2 options remaining after 2010.
Reddick bio link:
Reddick did not burn an option last year. I forget the exact number, but his time in the minors was managed so that he did not spend enough time in Pawtucket after he was added to the 40-man to burn an option. Obviously, he has burned one this year, but I don’t think we update that until the season has ended.
Actually no, I don't believe so
They may have gotten a kind of loophole with him- an option is used when a player is sent to the minors, not sent to the majors. He wasn’t added to the 40 man until the day he was brought to the majors and then only played 18 games in Pawtucket, and he needs to be down for 20 days to burn an option. Clever.
I was just counting the days myself. Interesting
And right, the option is used when the player is sent down, not when he is called up.
Either way, Reddick needs more plate discipline and better pitch recognition.
yeah, pitch recognition is the huge thing
I feel like whether he swings is entirely dependent on the count he is in, not the pitch at all. I feel like someone told him he needed to work on his plate discipline so he stopped swinging at pitches when he has a 3-1 count, but that doesn’t help. It just doesn’t look like he sees them at all.
Notice what the Marlins are doing.
They’re having bullpen trouble this year and are releasing, promoting and signing guys almost everyday it seems. That’s an interesting way to find a bullpen gem; keep sending new guys out there until someone claims a job.
No Manuel...
…because the bull(shit)pen is already sore about being shown up by Atchison. They couldn’t take another competent performance by someone paid less than them. They’d need therapy.
Other than “therapy” in the form of a savage Pedroia-administered beating.
Wait 'til next/this year?

Here is a question.
Why the hell didn’t we use Manuel when he was called up? I forget how many days he was up, though. Tito, don’t tell me you think Ramram is better.

Reddick has twice the arm of Brandon Moss
and can cover a lot more real estate. Like every batter worth his weight, he needs to recognize the spin on the ball and lower his O-swing%. Prof Nava needs to work with him.
Reddick has four arms?
You’re right, of course. That’s why the bat is frustrating as opposed to merely shrug-inducing. He’d be a great right-fielder if his bat could justify the line-up spot
