Mike Lowell to Disabled List Today. This Smells Fishy.
Mike Lowell is expected to hit the disabled list today to make room for Daisuke Matsuzaka, who will pitch tonight:
Red Sox corner infielder Mike Lowell is expected to be placed on the 15-day disabled list (right hip) prior to tonight's game against the Colorado Rockies. The move would clear a roster spot for pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, who is scheduled to start in Denver on Thursday night. Prior to his game-ending, pinch-hitting appearance on Tuesday night, Lowell had not appeared in a game in nine days.
I don't know why, but this smells funky. Real funky. Lowell pinch-hit Tuesday night and was unsuccessful. There was nothing weird about it; no coming up lame or running slow. Well, for Lowell it's always slow, but you get my point.
Something bigger may or may not be going down with Mike Lowell with this move.

I smell bologna.
Just release him, how much longer can this roster spot be held hostage?

I think they're going to DFA him, too
Or just flat out release. If he goes to the DL, they won’t be able to trade him.

No one really wants Mike Lowell
What does he bring to a ballclub at this point. He’s a hollow shell of the player he used to be.

Let me put it this way
If Mike’s contract had ended last year and he entered 2010 as a free agent would he have been signed by anyone?

I think you can trade someone on the DL
Wasn’t Chris Carter on the DL when he was traded in the Wagner deal? I believe you need the Commissioner to sign off on it though.

I'm not sure if they TECHNICALLY can't trade Lowell or not
But if he’s on the DL, teams aren’t going to want him. Lowell had to prove he was healthy over the course of the season before anything happened. And now he’s back on the DL, making him look even more brittle.

I feel like all the teams probably have at least as much info as us
and it probably looks like a phantom injury to them as well. Really, gives him a chance to play rehab games and get some regular at bats, so it could give him a little value if he performs
I don’t know protocol, but I have a suspicion that he won’t be making it into the minors, he will either be DFA’ed or released before he would begin a “rehab” assignment. This I think is just a convenience move to open up a spot for Dice-K (though I would have killed to see Felix get another start, he impressed me last week), give themselves a few days and pull the trigger on getting Lowell off of the team.

He's on the 15 day list.
He’s not going to sit around with the team and rehab with no chance to get any at bats. If he still wants to play for a team this year, he needs at bats, either in Pawtucket, Portland or extra spring training in Ft Myers. The other option would be to retire. He seems to still want to play for one more chance to swing his bat in the playoffs.
The issue is that the top of the minors is loaded right now, we’re still trying to figure out where Shealy plays and other teams aren’t going to care much about how he swings in extended spring training. I’m not sure they’re going to take at bats away from Rizzo, Lars and the gang who really need them right now given their struggles to show case Lowell. I think they’ve accepted that no one is going to give anything up for a batter in a horrible slump. I think the DL move is to get him off the roster temporarily and then give everyone one last phone call to work on a deal, if no one bites he gets his release before they’d even have to think of a rehab location.

Plus other teams seeing Mike Lowell play isn't going to help the situation
Our best hope is someone tricks themselves into thinking he can still play a little. If he’s playing they’ll be able to see that he’s all done when he’s hitting .179/.235/.205 in AAA.

if that was the case, he'd just get released
which is what would happen otherwise anyways… no one is willing to pay for him now, so it can’t hurt
...which is what is going to happen anyway.
There’s an offchance either WE have an injury and need him to fill in or another team has an injury and needs him in the meantime.

The beginning?
This is like, an hour and a half into the end of the movie for Lowell.
If I was your math homework I'd be really hard and you'd be doing me on your desk.

I think the MLB might have to do an investigation on this.

Meh...
Mike’s in pretty bad shape. If MLB investigates we can just send them a MRI showing his degenerative hip condition.
I think its a “phantom DL trip” sure. Nothing new has changed to force Mike to the DL. They probably talked to him and said “you can either go on the DL and hang around and see if a job opens up or we have to release you, Mikey. We need a player who can help us with that roster spot.” Rather than free agency he decided to hang around.

Yeah, because phantom DL trips aren't a common occurance.

It just seems kinda obvious.
They investigated the whole Oliver Perez thing.

Obvious or not, it's pretty par for the course.
It’s not like Lowell’s hip isn’t messed up either.

Lowell to the DL is a step in the right direction.
He’ll get regular at bats in the minors (Pawtucket, Portland, or Extra Spring) while he works to improve his swing hip and may show a team he can play everyday.

I just know if we DFA him
he’ll sign in NY, play DH, and put up a .900 OPS over the last three months of the season.
Maybe he’ll just retire now.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
in all honesty, it's a sad story

That sounds like he is done.
Sad, but maybe he will take the high road and retire.
The certified ambassador of all things good and great, here at OTM.
yeah it is too bad, he IS a good guy and has done a lot
I doubt he’ll retire while he’s getting another $6 million or so, but this at least alleviates concerns about the roster and a few fans weird beliefs that the Yankees will turn him into a superstar DH.
This is a way being manufactured for Lowell to hang it up with dignity
instead of embarrassment. e.g., internal conversations… “We tried to trade him, but no one wants him. If we cut him and no one even picks him up for the minimum, how do you think he’d feel?”
I honestly question if anyone was ever actually interested in Lowell
since the Max Ramirez thing.
