Who Is The Most Popular Boston Red Sox?

This is a very simple poll.

Kind of.

Who is the most popular player for the Boston Red Sox?

We're talking Major Leaguers, not Minor Leaguers (no Aaron Bates). We're talking players, not coaches (I know how so many of you love Tim Bogar). We're talking current players, not ex-players (you may not vote for Carl Everett).

I will only include logical options, not every player. I don't want the results to get watered down.

The poll is below.

Confusing Poll Question

I’m not trying to be dense (or obnoxious), but are you asking:
1. Who is your favorite Red Sox player?
or
2. Who do you think is the most popular Red Sox player?

I guessed that it’s the former, and voted accordingly.

by argo0 on Jun 2, 2010 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

It's the former

The latter is derived from the results of the former.

by gnick55 on Jun 2, 2010 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Unless you're being asked who you think is the most popular

Papi and Youk are my favorite players, but if asked I’d say Pedroia was the most popular.

by brogshan on Jun 2, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

um, no

If player X is the favorite player of a plurality of poll participants, but all participants are aware of this, then player X will get 100% of the vote.

I voted for Pedroia based on 2). If I had thought the poll was asking for my favorite, it might well have been Ortiz or Lester.

I wondered the same thing

And voted the same way.

I think its the latter.

Not more love for Lester?

There are few things more comforting in baseball than knowing you have a shutdown ace on the mound every 5th day.

by gnick55 on Jun 2, 2010 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

I believe the question is who’s the most popular around the world, not the most important guy on the team today.

by went9 on Jun 2, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

But I think that's why Lester is his favourite.

I think Lester is the Sox's best player

But I don’t think his “popularity” is quite there yet…

Well, exactly.

He’s not the most popular amongst the nation, because people have favourite players for different reasons. But I’m simply saying that it seems like the fact that Gnick feels Lester is a “shutdown ace” is enough to make him his personal favourite.

Ortiz is my favourite, but my criteria is based on other factors.

I went with Youkilis

Just barely—and that’s only because he’s the only player who gets “serenaded” when he catches a pop-up.

Glad it wasn't ALL time Sox player

That would have been real tough. Grew up watching Yaz, Tony C, and the rest of the Impossible Dreamers. Still, the ’04 team had some favorites, Papi (Big, not Stan), Schilling, Dave “the Steal” Roberts.

And any discussion of all time Soxers has to include Williams, Pesky, Doerr and Dom DiMaggio.

Buchholz, Lester, Youk/Pedroia tied, Bard, Papi, Drew.

I can’t get over my love for Buchholz. It has no explanation or reason.

I went Pedroia

But Lester and Youk are also up there, Pedroia ultimately won because I love when he says things, whereas I have not heard much saying of things from either Lester or Youk.
Papi also got consideration because I love him when he’s happy, and there was this one play a few years ago that really stuck with me when he got caught in a rundown and knowing he was done for hugged the second baseman. That always sticks out in my mind when I think about him.

Tek

is still on this team and still the captain, and I still think loved by everyone. He got my vote. Just because he doesn’t play every day, doesn’t mean he’s any less popular. Less valuable in termsof production, yes, but still captain.

Wow

I can`t believe Wakefield is not on this list. The guy (we are talking popularity here) is a damn near saint with the charitable things he does in Boston and Massachusetts..and is one of the most selfless players on the Sox (especially concerning money/contract/starting/relieving/doing whatever the Sox ask of him with a smile).

He has been my favorite since for years (Im a knuckleball pitcher as well, so I might be a bit biased)

No love for the old soldier?
