Red Sox Sign Ryan Shealy to Minor League Contract
A day after being released by the Rays, Ken Rosenthal reports that Ryan Shealy has signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox.
Shealy, a right-handed hitting first baseman, had a .238/.354/.512 line in Triple-A this year. His major league numbers are not particularly impressive at .271/.335/.429, but it's certainly decent for a bench bat if nothing else.
With the Triple-A first base position already filled by Lars Anderson, and the designated hitter being filled by a rotation of outfielders, playing time will be even harder to find in Pawtucket with Shealy's arrival.

I saw he was released yesterday and thought, I wouldn’t mind if we picked this guy up and then we did. I will be projecting similar happy thoughts for the Celts all day. Does this have any implications for Lowell?

Eh, I don't think it has implications for Lowell.
It just reinforces that we don’t really have a need for him specifically, and that if anyone wants to pay a few mill off his contact…

Was Shealy ever signed/drafted previously by the Red Sox?
His name is very familiar and I’m not quite sure why…

We were linked to him in the offseason but thats about it
But I know what you mean, the name Ryan Shealy means a lot more to me than his slash line for some reason.

He has a bat in his hand.
That means he’s not a pitcher, meaning he can’t help our bullpen.
Frig. I’m looking forward to one of THEM announcements.

This reminds me of another transaction...
A once promising power hitting 1b prospect, shuffled from one club to the next, never really getting a chance to start, lands with the Sox for a minute before breaking out somewhere else. It’s… Carlos Pena. This guy could start somewhere, just not here.
Pena? I wish this guy could be Pena. Doubt it. In fact, I see no place for him in Pawtucket, not to mention Boston.

That's the point.
Nobody thought Pena would be Pena either.

This is true
but my question is where does Shealy play in Pawtucket, and how often?

I think they can find him some starts.
In their last game the DH was Tug Hulett. Now I know they would be running the risk of disturbing the development of such a young up and comer, but it might be worth that risk. (I hope this comes across as all-in-good-fun teasing rather than nastily sarcastic)
Wasn't Shealy a Rockies prospect at one point?
I really thought he was going to emerge as a better player. I think that I remember him being mentioned along with Adrian Gonzalez (then of the Rangers, behind Teixeira) as possible targets when Youk was playing at 3B.

yeah we wanted him in 2004.
You know Theo when he sets his mind on a player…
