Portland Game Thread/Monday Open Thread
The Sea Dogs are on NESN today (1:00 EST), and since there's no other game, I figured I might as well throw this up. Anyone interested in prospect watching, Red Sox talking, or just anything else that might come up today, stop by.
There will be Ryan Kalish idol-worshipping.
I think the PawSox may be on TV in Rhode Island, too.

Craziness at Hadlock
Well NESN is in the house, so everyone is always amped up! This should deliver, Casey Kelly vs Kyle Gibson. Last time Gibson faced the Sea Dogs, Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Cameron got 3 of the 4 hiys he allowed. Not too bad!
Check out some pictures from the game http://hadlockheadlines.blogspot.com/2010/05/nesn-rific-game-game-day-sea-dogs-vs-nb.html
Ben
I will not be able to view the game today, so I want a full report and writeup on Casey Kelly’s start on my desk in the morning!
AND WHEN I SAY ‘DESK,’ I MEAN ON THE FRONT PAGE. AND WHEN I SAY ‘MORNING,’ I MEAN NOOOOW!
OK, I’m kidding… (kind of).

Theeeeeere goes Kalish.
Groundout to 2nd, though really it should’ve been a home. Totally. Definitely.

Kelly in trouble now.
Blooper on an off-speed pitch nearly in the dirt gives New Britain their first hit. Kalish gambled trying to slide on a sinking liner (almost got it), but it ended up getting by him for a double.

Exposito is surprised by a delayed steal.
Not a bad throw, but mishandled by Navarro.
Team is looking pretty foolish right now, to be honest. Nobody has looked good this inning at all. Rizzo almost bungled the third out there, but Kelly got there in time and only dropped the ball on the transfer. Ick.
I think Kelly needs to work on putting guys away. Getting ahead on good pitches, but then goes to either garbage or “swing away” pitches.

Kelly gives up a liner to start the inning, but a grounder and a great stretch by Rizzo leads to a twin killing.
I really like Kelly’s offspeed stuff so far. He’s too predictable when he gets behind though. Fastball middle, maybe middle-away, and unless it’s overpowering, that’s an easy ball to hit. Exactly the sort of thing AA hitters will make you learn.
USG
Exposito with another good AB, but bad results.
Runs the count full, and hits a hard ball down the line. But the 3B makes a good grab, runs to third, and throws to first.

Top-5 prospect.
Bad defense today, but he’s supposed to be very good. His swing is definitely long, leading to some contact problems, so he’ll need to cut that down to avoid contact problems. When he does, though, he should be a very good offensive player too. More power than he’s been given credit for, a smart player at the plate and on the basepaths, where he’s got above average speed for a first baseman.
I sort of see him as a slightly more powerful pre-breakout Youkilis. I wonder if he couldn’t play 3rd, too, with his agility.
USG
by Ben Buchanan on May 31, 2010 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions
And to qualify that, my top-5 would probably be
Kelly
Kalish
Anderson
Rizzo
Iglesias
With the obvious Westy asterisk.
